At one point in the not-too-distant past, you signed up to receive email updates about the Commons In A Box (CBOX) project, which aims to make the software that successfully powers the CUNY Academic Commons available for free to universities and non-profits around the globe. Thanks again for your interest in the project.
We've established this new email list to keep interested parties updated on the project. We expect it to be a low-traffic list, on the order of 2-4 emails a year. We'd love to keep you informed about our project, but should you wish to unsubscribe, please find a link at the bottom of this message.
CBOX was released in November 2012, thanks to a generous grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and it has been downloaded over 12,000 times since then. We hope you’ve explored how it can be used to create vibrant online communities for a variety of institutions. There are some great examples on our showcase page, including projects by the Modern Language Association, Arizona State University, and Project MUSE.
The CBOX team recently released version 1.0.8 of the software, and we maintain an active Help & Support forum that helps members with technical issues. We encourage you to get involved and ask questions.
Recent News and Awards
- Commons In A Box won a 2013 Digital Humanities Award for Best Digital Humanities Tool or Suite of Tools.
- Two CBOX projects won start-up grant from the NEH Office of Digital Humanities. The Graduate Center, CUNY, won an award for the Social Paper project, and the Modern Language Association won an award, shared with Columbia University, for the development of Humanities CORE.
- We are collaborating with the University of California, Berkeley, on a Mellon grant for the DiRT Directory project that will result in the development of new CBOX features.
Future plans
- One of our current projects is to port over the Member Profile page currently available on the CUNY Academic Commons and generalize it as a feature for CBOX.
- In the future we hope is to develop different “flavors” of CBOX for teaching, research, and non-profits. We are interested in partnering with other projects – please let us know how we can help build a community around the work you are doing.
A Community Project
CBOX is an open-source project, and we hope you contribute by testing the software, reporting bugs, and suggesting new features. If you have the skills, we invite you to contribute patches on GitHub, and contact our team to discuss collaboration with our development team.
CBOX gets better when our community reports issues, resolves issues, and contributes to our codebase.
