Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19998 (Resolved): Hypoths.is not working on media Library PDFhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199982024-03-18T15:00:46ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A user today alerted me that hypothesis is not working on a pdf they uploaded to a public commons site:

https://socialannotation.commons.gc.cuny.edu/annotating-a-pdf/

I was able to recreate the issue here:

https://classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2024/03/18/testing-hypothesis-on-pdf-commons/

The expected behavior of a public Commons site running hypothes.is plugin with annotation on media library PDFs enabled would be:

1. user uploads PDF to site media library
2. Insert PDF on page or post
3. Site visitor clicks PDF link from page/post
4. When PDF from media library opens, plugin adds "https://via.hypothes.is" prefix to PDF view and visitor is able to annotate.

I believe something might be going wrong in step #4. Is it possible the Commons is blocking the addition of the via prefix?

Thanks for looking into this!
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19971 (New): Expected Group Forum Functionalityhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199712024-03-13T20:02:46ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A user posted a message in a public group forum at 1:31pm:

https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/cuny-manifold-users/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-2/

It was cross-posted on several other groups, which posted at 2:03. Examples are below, both groups are also public

COIL:
https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/collaborative-online-international-learning-coil/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-3/

TLC: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/teaching-and-learning-center/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-6/

I received an email from the COIL forum at 2:37, see screenshot.

Two questions:

1. Robin (user) was wondering: Is this lag time between original posting, cross posting, and email typical and correct functionality? I thought maybe yes, since all messages have to be pulled through to each location, but wanted to be sure to ask.

2. Why wasn't the email I received from the CUNY Manifold Group, where the forum post was originated?

I received the email of the group forum post from the COIL group. This seems strange since both groups are public. I would think that a user would want the email to come from the forum where the post was originally shared.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19966 (Reporter Feedback): Slow Load Time on Sitehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199662024-03-13T14:43:08ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A user is developing a robust program website for a GC department. Right now it is on a dev domain and he plans to clone the site into the final domain soon. But first he is hoping to resolve the slow load times he is noticing on the site:

https://lmistest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

-
From the User:

I am just getting really slow load times, and a lot of times, images don’t load. I was worried that I had clogged the site with too many images or something...

I have a lot of images currently uploaded to the site, especially a few big splash images, which I will ultimately delete, as I was just using these for drafts. However, we will be writing about 40 descriptions of projects we have worked on, and each one will have at least one (smaller) image, so I worry about the site slowing down even more?

I also worry it has to do with how many changes I made to the underlying theme (I’m currently using “Raft”)? I would really like to switch the theme to just a Wordpress Twenty Twenty-Four theme, but I spent a lot of time tweaking margins and padding etc. to make things look how I wanted them, so I don’t want to start from scratch… That said, if it’s an issue with the images, maybe the theme doesn’t have much to do with it?

-

I ran the site through a free (questionably accurate) load time checker and it did report the site was very slow. Can you all confirm slow load time and help diagnose what might be causing this?

Hi Scott and All,

I wanted to provide some feedback on our shiny and new help redesign. Overall it looks great! The main issue I am experiencing is the font size is so large, I really feel the site looks cramped and I can only find a little bit of information at one time.

In the screenshot attached, the header is taking up ~1/3 of the page, the title and first sentence is another 1/3 of the page, and I can only see 1-2 menu items in the left sidebar, whereas in the past design I could see about 10+ menu items so it was clear that the menu on the left was the "main nav" for each help section.

Could we consider changing the font size and spacing to make it so help site visitors can see more information on the page? Do others feel this would be helpful?
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19628 (New): Text to Audio browser Add-on for Increased Accessi...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196282024-01-30T17:02:30ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I was exploring text to audio tools the other day and found that both Firefox and Chrome have browser add-ons called "Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader" that add text to audio features on websites. Once installed in the browser, the tool converts the Commons page to audio, and allows users to navigate websites with support from audio navigation.

We might add a note about this on the accessibility page, and I can add it to the help documentation for teaching.

Using the tools also reveals that some of the home pages sections are skipped during audio, which makes me wonder if they are also missing or skipped if someone is using a screen reader. Maybe something to investigate when we have a chance.

Hi All,

I replied to this ticket below (Ticket 4583) through WS desk on Friday afternoon. Now when I go to find the ticket in WS desk it is nowhere to be found. See screenshots.

This has happened several times that I cannot find the tickets I was working on and therefore I cannot check if they have been replied to. Am I doing something wrong? Is this a bug or are the tickets archived somewhere that I cannot access?
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19611 (Resolved): Formatting Issues on New Cvhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196112024-01-26T21:03:33ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A message from a Commons user. Sounnds like his CV was migrated correctly at first but somehow the formatting and html was messed up in later updates:

Hi Commons Team,

I noticed today that all of the html markup (links, formatting, etc.) got lost on my profile page:

https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/members/jbretmaney/

Cp. 2022 version: https://web.archive.org/web/20221101000000*/https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/members/jbretmaney/

It had looked really nice after the initial Commons facelift. I assume this loss of the markup occurred at a later stage in that process. Do you know if that markup will be recovered? If not, should I go ahead and reformat the profile now or is the dev team still making tweaks to this part of the site?

CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19503 (Resolved): Pages to Postshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/195032024-01-09T17:14:25ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I am moving a large portion of the TLC website to its own site on the Commons. The workshop archive, originally built into the TLC site, continues to grow and we would like to make it a stand alone resource.

https://tlc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/workshop-archive/

All of the the content (workshops entries) were created as pages on the TLC (as to not interfere with our news posts etc.) but now, on a standalone site, it would be ideal if each entry was a post.

I already exported much of the content to a site here:

https://testimportarchive.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

But I am wondering: do we already have a plugin that converts pages to posts? If so, I couldn't identify it. And if we do not, would we be able to add the plugin below to the commons (and/or just the test site above, if that is preferred).

Hi All,

I followed up with Zach after our community call today to clarify how he would like to contribute to the model CV we will use for Commons outreach for the next release.

Rather than using his own personal and public CV, Zach is available to help build out a model graduate student CV for us to use in outreach about the new CV features.

To get this going, a few questions:
- should zach spin up a new account to go with this CV?
-- If yes, should the new account and model CV be done on the dev site and then moved over to production?
- If we are using this model CV for outreach (and possibly documentation? not sure) what is the timeline on when this needs to be up and running?

I'm sure there are other considerations or questions I am missing so please feel free to let us know what we need to do!
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19400 (New): Images not loadinghttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/194002023-12-11T18:17:15ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

This is the LMIS test site I was refering to on the team call last friday.

The web desginer got in touch with me to report that he is having trouble with the images loading slowly or not at all and I am able to re-create this issue in firefox and chrome.

https://lmistest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Are you seeing this issue? Can you look into why these images are not loading?

I have asked for more info about any plugin installs recently, but I met with him last Wednesday and the site was working fine. I will send any more info he can provide soon.

Hi All,

We just received a message through Zendesk from a professor from Hunter's National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions. Their groups is working on a large project to share resources and is considering the commons as a place to host the project. They outlined a few of the functionalities they are looking for and it seems very robust and maybe outside the realm of possibilities for hosting on the Commons. I wanted to get your feedback on this initial message so I have a sense of how to help scope the project when we meet with them. I've asked Scott to join me in the meeting with them since, among other tools, they will likely want to integrate tableau and other external tools into the site if they decide to host on the Commons.

The Faculty member writes:

I run a research center at Hunter College and we are considering using CUNY Commons as the platform for an interactive site for access to our data by other scholars.

Before moving in that direction, we were wondering whether the CUNY Commons Work Press set up will permit integration with Tableau, and allow plugins and customization.

These are three functionalities we are trying to accomplish:

A repository for an interactive database which allows users to search and display values of the variables in our data set by school. It may also >display all of the data simultaneously in a spreadsheet if the user prefers. It would include links to download the data in different formats so that >researchers can analyze the data using their favorite program (Excel, SPSS, Stata, R).

I think we have a searchable database in the slavery index but not sure if this is hosted on the commons and if that was a special project we helped support.

https://nesri.commons.gc.cuny.edu/dashboard/

A data entry portal for users to update the data by adding or correcting any data points using a Google form or equivalent. The form would need to be >integrated with the database so that if approved by our internal quality control, the data would be updated automatically using the data from the form. >In addition, we would need the capability of pushing the form out to specified email addresses at predetermined dates/times for updated data to be >completed by institutional and union contacts.

There may be a way to script google form to google sheet but obviously this would happen outside of the commons. But the google form could be hosted on their commons website. Do we know of any other examples of folks using google scripts in conjunction with the commons? Can we facilitate this?

A repository for current contract files (~880 pdf files; ~2.5 GB and growing) that would be searchable and could be updated via upload by users via >request #2 above. We would hope for a search tool to make all of the separate contract files searchable by the user (i.e. the user could simultaneously >search all of the contract files for keywords and results would display to the user the names of the files containing those words, or maybe even >passages of text with the keywords highlighted—like in Google Books).

The Commons can host PDF files, but I do not think we can make the media library searchable. But we could allow the creators of this site to upload pdf and create a taxonomy for searching for keywords and tags assigned to posts.

Moreover, is the 2.5 GB of storage going to cause space issues on this site? If I recall correctly there are no storage limits per site, but wanted to check in about whether the 2.5 GB ("and growing") is pushing the limits on what we can support.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19076 (Resolved): Wordpress Pages to PDFhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/190762023-10-23T14:26:47ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A new request from the creator of a the PIR journal site....

https://pirjournal.commons.gc.cuny.edu/puppet-research-international-1-no-1/

They would like to allow visitors to download PDF versions of the articles. I suggested they upload PDFs to media library and make them available for download. But they don't have PDFs...and are hoping to do something like this PDF download option:

https://arabstages.org/?p=3473&preview=true

It seems some kind of tool is running the download on the Arab stages site, but I couldn't figure out the mechanism.

Can you look at this example and see if we might be able to make it possible on the PIR site?

Hi All,

Message from a user below. I have been able to recreate the issue on the site in firefox and chrome.

They are not running any plugins that I think would cause this. Will you take a look?

Message
> "We have had a consistent problem with images even though we turned off jetpack where certain ones just will not load on the first try, only on refresh. I looked and some do have a 500 error. I tried just to change the captions and see if the metadata was messing things up but no consistent success. I have also tried making sure all the images are smaller, but many pages, very small images are not loading. There is one error about an event listener that I cannot make sense of and may not be connected at all.

Hi Sara,

I am sending along some group forum use cases. It seems most groups have one-off messages in the forums, so I think most users are using the group forum as an email list serv, as opposed to longer discussion threads. However, there are likely private course groups that are using the forums for threaded discussions, but I can't see into the private groups to confirm.
