Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #16055 (Resolved): Header Image Will not Displayhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/160552022-05-04T14:34:01ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

The Queens CTL is rebuilding their dept site on the Commons: https://cetllqc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

They are encountering an issue where the header will not display their full logo image.

This is the media file they want to use:
https://cetllqc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-content/blogs.dir/21509/files/2022/04/cropped-cetll_300_notag_150ppi.png

They want to colorful circle and text to appear in the header. Right now, only the text will display.

Scott figured out that the issue might be the theme (Customizr) and created a workaround by adding CSS in the Simple CSS area to make the image display in the header as intended.

However, the full image (circle+text) is still not displaying.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #15947 (Resolved): Slides and Site Running slow issueshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/159472022-04-21T14:28:25ZLaurie Hurson

A user is complaining that their site is running very slowly. Site is here: https://lahtilab.commons.gc.cuny.edu/lab-publications/

I would imagine the site is running slowly because the slider has too many images and other pages are packed with media (pdfs, images).

However, I wanted to elevate this in case there is something else going on here and we might be able to speed up the load times on this site.

He is also having issues with meta slider on the site, he is unable to access several sliders he built in the backend"

"slider #1062 cannot be accessed in the metaslider page, and so cannot be edited. The description says there are 94 slides, which >is true, but the icon says 0 slides."

"slider #868 is a version of "people 09-17" that never saved-- it hung up. Description claims there are 54 slides and icon says 0. "

"I would like to be able to delete #868 but can't access it. I spent a lot of time on #1062 and it would suck to have to delete that one too and start all over again, but if that's the way it has to go, so be it. Is there a way to delete these two without actually accessing them in the GUI?"

I think these issues are caused by adding too many slides to a slider (and having multiple that are this large) but maybe I am mistaken? If there might be a bug on the backend here, I wanted to loop that in too.
CUNY Academic Commons - Documentation #15368 (Resolved): Commons home page accesshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/153682022-02-16T22:01:49ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

For some reason I seem to continually loose access to the dashboard of the commons home page where I can add to the featured sites and groups lists.

I would like to add the following site to featured sites list
https://gcmteachinghub.commons.gc.cuny.edu

and write it up on the OER showcase page (which I no longer have access to edit)
https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/open-educational-resource-projects-on-the-commons/

Can I please have access to to edit the showcase page? And can someone add this site to the feature sites list or allow me to add the site to the list?

Hi Boone/All,

I am wondering if we might be able to install a pre-configured SPLOT theme below, developed by Alan Levine. It allows for authoring on a site from the front end so that any visitor can add to the site.

TRUWriter theme: https://splot.ca/splots/tru-writer/

I am thinking about a project for collecting commons' user stories (geared towards faculty and students) that reflect on teaching and learning on the commons over the past year. Posts and stories can provide details using the commons during our shift to online teaching and learning and offer lessons to carry forward as we transition back into (partially) F2F teaching and learning in Fall 2021.

If we can install this theme, I will make the site visible only to commons users so only users could see and author posts/stories. I am hoping to add a field to indicate faculty/student and maybe an upload feature for faculty and students to share assignments or other artifacts. However, I won't know if I can make changes and add fields until I am able to get a look at theme.

I am not sure if this theme/idea presents security issues, so let me know what you think.

Hi All,

SPS faculty are redesigning their Faculty Community site: https://spsfaculty.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

They use the tool Ensemble video to make and host videos and would like to pull their videos into their Commons site via the Ensemble Video Responsive Plugin.

Videos are pulled by adding their ensemble URL to the Ensemble Video setting area (screenshot)
https://spsfaculty.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=ensemble_video

Whenever they add their own URL on this page and attempt to update, the url is not saved; it is stripped out and replaced with "demo", as seen in screenshot.

They have reached out to the Ensemble plugin team to check if this issue might be a problem with the plugin but I also told the SPS team that I would check with our dev team. The SPS team said that"If you need more information or need to connect the Commons developers with our Ensemble plugin vendor, let me know. The Ensemble folks would be open to this."

Can we check on possible reasons this url may not be updating or if the commons system is stripping the url upon saving?

Hi All,

I know the Commons typically strips embed and iframe codes but sometimes we allow for custom embeds on certain sites.

A professor is requesting a github embed on his commons site, message below --

"I am trying to put together a microsite to showcase my students' work throughout the semester. The site will be built in Javascript and deployed in Github Pages and I was hoping to embed or iFrame it into our commons class page.

The link to embed will be at: https://interactivedatavis.github.io/Adv-Studio-Fall2020/ [interactivedatavis.github.io]
(currently it is just a duplication of last year's site, but it will be updated this weekend).
The commons link we would like to include the site on is: https://datavisstudiof2020.commons.gc.cuny.edu/category/posts/
"

Can we allow this embed on his site? Let me know if anymore information is needed.

Hi All,

We have a faculty request to upload an Open Document Presentation ODP file. I think these file types are currently blocked from upload. Is there a way we can allow ODP files to be uploaded? Would we want to allow this only on a specific site?

I am waiting on the faculty member to provide a link to the site where they want to upload these files.

Hi All,

I think this might be related to the issue discussed on the dev call yesterday and mentioned in the ticket #12165. I had some trouble following the specifics but I think I understood that its related to the deletion of users from sites or the wiping of the user roles on a site?

In this case, a Commons user is trying to access a site on which he is an admin. He can view the site in My Sites but when he clicks he is re-directed to the Commons page.

His user name is "fcanela" and the site he is trying to access is https://fcpd.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

That's all the info I have right now but Let me know if I need to follow up with him about anything else
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #12139 (Resolved): Addressing Redundant Links Accessibility Issuehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/121392019-11-25T16:25:59ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

Following up on our accessibility conversation from the recent team meeting...

One of the most common issues on the Commons is the prevalence of redundant links throughout many of the directory pages. Redundant links are an issue because often screen readers navigate by jumping through the links on a page.

Common places where redundant links appear:
- On the Home page in the "Group" and "People" rolls the image and title text link to same place
- In My commons, and sites and group directory pages, avatar and Title text link to same place

Boone suggested that various types of redundant link pairs might require different solutions and I think i recall and aria roll being mentioned. I think starting with these pages would be great for now but I can also provide additional information about where this might be happening across the Commons.
CUNY Academic Commons - Documentation #11906 (Resolved): Commons "Help" and Teaching Site Overhaulhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/119062019-09-25T20:16:58ZLaurie Hurson

Somewhat related to ticket 8666: https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/8666 (i didn't know how to or if i should connect the tickets)

Hi all,

I have taken a look at the Commons HELP pages and the Teaching on the Commons site (https://teach.commons.gc.cuny.edu/) and have some suggestions for streamlining the documentation on these sites.

In it's current format the Teaching site replicated documentation that could already be found in the HELP Pages. It might be most useful if the teaching site serves as a space to introduce folks to the possibilities teaching on the Commons with links out to the generic help pages for technical documentation. The Teaching site could host pedagogical strategies and models, explanations of the teaching templates and plugins, guidelines for professors to share with thier students, etc. and then ultimately guide/link users back to the appropriate technical documentation on the HELP pages. Creating linkages between the Teaching on the Commons site back to the HELP pages will connect users to important documentation while also showcasing what is available in the HELP area. Thoughts?

In terms of the HELP Pages, I have a few suggestions/questions:

- At the top of HELP there are 4 boxes. We might want to consider replacing "Get Creative" with "Teach a Course" and linking to the teaching page to create a prominent link between these spaces. The "Get Creative" info presents "ways to use the commons" which might be best used as an answer to a "Common Commons question" like: "What can I do on the Commons?"

- Speaking of the Common Commons Questions on the HELP home page, we might want to consider updating the questions to reflect the most recent and popular questions that come in through ZenDesk. I think Marilyn and Scott probably can provide helpful insight about the most common questions coming into the Zendesk in the last year. Some suggested additions:
*What is the difference between a group and a site?
*How do I create a post?
*How can I control Privacy settings on the Commons?

- Finally, we might want to consider eliminating the search bar. This seems counter intuitive but the results are often overwhelming and dont seem granular or targeted enough to be helpful. This is just a theory but I can imagine that new user who searches, "how to make a site", or "how to post" or, "how to create a page" and the results are so detailed that they are unhelpful. Boone, is there any way to know what people have searched for in the HELP site? Or, could we monitor upcoming searches to know what people are looking for? If so, that might inform how we approach this.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #11833 (Resolved): CC Image Pluginhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/118332019-09-06T15:28:33ZLaurie Hurson

A new plugin adds the functionality to search and use CC-licensed images. This might be of interest and connect to our current work supporting OER and teaching on the Commons.

The plugin allows the author to search and use CC-lisensed images via a pop-up window in WordPress editor and the authors does not need to worry about copyright of images. This might also offer a space to add some pedagogical language about image use. something faculty ask about often.

Hi Boone,

One of the faculty members I worked with in the past emailed me this afternoon asking if her site was down. When I go to the site I just a white screen. Any idea what the issue is here?

Thanks for the help!
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #9120 (Resolved): Hypothesis Plugin not working on media library PDFs...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/91202018-01-25T21:16:38ZLaurie Hurson

Hi Boone,

As you know, the past Hypothesis issue was resolved by clarifying that hypothesis only works on Media Library PDFs if the site visibility is listed as public.

I am having issues with Hypothesis not running on PDFs on a publicly visible site here: https://anasar.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Specifically, the PDFs are on this page are not working: https://anasar.commons.gc.cuny.edu/mat-216-course-materials/ .

I'm not sure if its because the PDFs are so big? Or because they originally had hyperlinks embedded within them (as anchors tags)? I also noticed that the PDF URLs include a /blogs.dir/ element and I'm not sure if that (or some URL issue) is causing an problem?

Sorry if this is a simple front-end-ish fix that I am just missing.

Thanks in advance for you help.
