Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19998 (Resolved): Hypoths.is not working on media Library PDFhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199982024-03-18T15:00:46ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A user today alerted me that hypothesis is not working on a pdf they uploaded to a public commons site:

https://socialannotation.commons.gc.cuny.edu/annotating-a-pdf/

I was able to recreate the issue here:

https://classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2024/03/18/testing-hypothesis-on-pdf-commons/

The expected behavior of a public Commons site running hypothes.is plugin with annotation on media library PDFs enabled would be:

1. user uploads PDF to site media library
2. Insert PDF on page or post
3. Site visitor clicks PDF link from page/post
4. When PDF from media library opens, plugin adds "https://via.hypothes.is" prefix to PDF view and visitor is able to annotate.

I believe something might be going wrong in step #4. Is it possible the Commons is blocking the addition of the via prefix?

Thanks for looking into this!
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19971 (New): Expected Group Forum Functionalityhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199712024-03-13T20:02:46ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A user posted a message in a public group forum at 1:31pm:

https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/cuny-manifold-users/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-2/

It was cross-posted on several other groups, which posted at 2:03. Examples are below, both groups are also public

COIL:
https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/collaborative-online-international-learning-coil/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-3/

TLC: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/teaching-and-learning-center/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-6/

I received an email from the COIL forum at 2:37, see screenshot.

Two questions:

1. Robin (user) was wondering: Is this lag time between original posting, cross posting, and email typical and correct functionality? I thought maybe yes, since all messages have to be pulled through to each location, but wanted to be sure to ask.

2. Why wasn't the email I received from the CUNY Manifold Group, where the forum post was originated?

I received the email of the group forum post from the COIL group. This seems strange since both groups are public. I would think that a user would want the email to come from the forum where the post was originally shared.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19966 (Reporter Feedback): Slow Load Time on Sitehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199662024-03-13T14:43:08ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A user is developing a robust program website for a GC department. Right now it is on a dev domain and he plans to clone the site into the final domain soon. But first he is hoping to resolve the slow load times he is noticing on the site:

https://lmistest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

-
From the User:

I am just getting really slow load times, and a lot of times, images don’t load. I was worried that I had clogged the site with too many images or something...

I have a lot of images currently uploaded to the site, especially a few big splash images, which I will ultimately delete, as I was just using these for drafts. However, we will be writing about 40 descriptions of projects we have worked on, and each one will have at least one (smaller) image, so I worry about the site slowing down even more?

I also worry it has to do with how many changes I made to the underlying theme (I’m currently using “Raft”)? I would really like to switch the theme to just a Wordpress Twenty Twenty-Four theme, but I spent a lot of time tweaking margins and padding etc. to make things look how I wanted them, so I don’t want to start from scratch… That said, if it’s an issue with the images, maybe the theme doesn’t have much to do with it?

-

I ran the site through a free (questionably accurate) load time checker and it did report the site was very slow. Can you all confirm slow load time and help diagnose what might be causing this?

Thanks!
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19861 (New): Help redesign Feedbackhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/198612024-02-29T20:58:18ZLaurie Hurson

Hi Scott and All,

I wanted to provide some feedback on our shiny and new help redesign. Overall it looks great! The main issue I am experiencing is the font size is so large, I really feel the site looks cramped and I can only find a little bit of information at one time.

In the screenshot attached, the header is taking up ~1/3 of the page, the title and first sentence is another 1/3 of the page, and I can only see 1-2 menu items in the left sidebar, whereas in the past design I could see about 10+ menu items so it was clear that the menu on the left was the "main nav" for each help section.

Could we consider changing the font size and spacing to make it so help site visitors can see more information on the page? Do others feel this would be helpful?
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19724 (New): Updating Group/Site Creation and Completion pageshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/197242024-02-08T19:16:36ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I am wondering if, as part of this next phase of redesign, we might update the group/site creation portal pages and the group/site completion page?

I don't think there need to be any functional changes perhaps this is only ux/design and font changes? Maybe I am wrong though.

The completion page especially doesn't seem like it would be too complicated. But if this request adds too much labor, or muddies the group overhaul process, feel free to ignore.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19628 (New): Text to Audio browser Add-on for Increased Accessi...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196282024-01-30T17:02:30ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I was exploring text to audio tools the other day and found that both Firefox and Chrome have browser add-ons called "Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader" that add text to audio features on websites. Once installed in the browser, the tool converts the Commons page to audio, and allows users to navigate websites with support from audio navigation.

We might add a note about this on the accessibility page, and I can add it to the help documentation for teaching.

Using the tools also reveals that some of the home pages sections are skipped during audio, which makes me wonder if they are also missing or skipped if someone is using a screen reader. Maybe something to investigate when we have a chance.

Thanks!
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19627 (Assigned): Private Post default Not working?https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196272024-01-30T16:29:41ZLaurie Hurson

Hi all,

I am working with a professor on this site:

https://urb613sp24.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

The students created draft posts last night but it appears that none of the posts were private by default even though the plugin is running on the site.

https://urb613sp24.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/edit.php

I am not sure if the plugin is depricated with new versions of Wordpress? I created a new post to test and it is created as public and when I go to change the visibility I am prompted "Would you like to privately publish this post now?" which seems like a different workflow for privatizing posts compared to the past.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19617 (New): Tickets Missing from WS deskhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196172024-01-29T17:19:57ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I replied to this ticket below (Ticket 4583) through WS desk on Friday afternoon. Now when I go to find the ticket in WS desk it is nowhere to be found. See screenshots.

This has happened several times that I cannot find the tickets I was working on and therefore I cannot check if they have been replied to. Am I doing something wrong? Is this a bug or are the tickets archived somewhere that I cannot access?
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19611 (Resolved): Formatting Issues on New Cvhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196112024-01-26T21:03:33ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A message from a Commons user. Sounnds like his CV was migrated correctly at first but somehow the formatting and html was messed up in later updates:

Hi Commons Team,

I noticed today that all of the html markup (links, formatting, etc.) got lost on my profile page:

https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/members/jbretmaney/

Cp. 2022 version: https://web.archive.org/web/20221101000000*/https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/members/jbretmaney/

It had looked really nice after the initial Commons facelift. I assume this loss of the markup occurred at a later stage in that process. Do you know if that markup will be recovered? If not, should I go ahead and reformat the profile now or is the dev team still making tweaks to this part of the site?

CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19478 (Resolved): CV Editor Bugs when creating Sample CVhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/194782024-01-03T19:46:10ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I am working on the sample CV and am noticing a few bugs with the CV editor. Sorry I am late to report them but wanted to make sure to flag.

Possible bugs:
1. Name does not appear at the top of the CV Page above pronouns. I tried entering this information in my profile, in case it was pulling from the profile info, but nothing is coming up (maybe it takes some time?). Is the profile information supposed to auto-populate those CV areas? I can confirm this happens in both firefox and chrome after clearing cache.

2. I don't think the "Socials" area is working correctly. I can input information but it appears incorrectly spaced below the word "socials" and I cannot link to any social platforms. Even after I entered a fake Twitter in my profile, nothing is appearing.

3. In "Positions" I can indicate a CUNY campus but the campus name does not appear once the the CV is saved and published.

4. When selecting header media the select area appears to be misaligned.

5. I cannot view, edit, or create a CV in safari. The page does not load.

Other thoughts:
6. Should we add a date input for the positions section? Many people include dates with their CV positions, and if left blank it could just not display.

7. When I am working on my CV but it is not yet published, I have no way to see how it will look once it goes live. So the only way to see how the CV will look is to publish. I do not think this is ideal. Would it be possible to add a "preview live CV" option? This way, people who are working on pulling it together do not have to go live just to see how it will appear once published. Maybe I am missing this option and it is already there, and if so, apologies!
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19422 (New): Model CV for Commons Release and Outreachhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/194222023-12-15T20:15:09ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I followed up with Zach after our community call today to clarify how he would like to contribute to the model CV we will use for Commons outreach for the next release.

Rather than using his own personal and public CV, Zach is available to help build out a model graduate student CV for us to use in outreach about the new CV features.

To get this going, a few questions:
- should zach spin up a new account to go with this CV?
-- If yes, should the new account and model CV be done on the dev site and then moved over to production?
- If we are using this model CV for outreach (and possibly documentation? not sure) what is the timeline on when this needs to be up and running?

I'm sure there are other considerations or questions I am missing so please feel free to let us know what we need to do!
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19341 (Resolved): Commons Down?https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/193412023-11-28T16:47:02ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

Message from a user below. I have been able to recreate the issue on the site in firefox and chrome.

They are not running any plugins that I think would cause this. Will you take a look?

Thank you!

I looked and some do have a 500 error. I tried just to change the captions and see if the metadata was messing things up but no consistent success. I have also tried making sure all the images are smaller, but many pages, very small images are not loading.
Hi All,

A user is trying to use the hyper audio plugin and soundcloud audio links. They are experiencing issues with this plugin and included the attached screenshot) (waiting for more info)

I also test this plugin with soundcloud audio here: https://classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/hyperaudio-test/

I am unable to make the audio play when trying to use the plugin with Soundcloud, and I am unable to make a YouTube video play because it required the iframe embed code, which is stripped out.

Would it be possible to make this plugin functional with Soundcloud audio and YouTube videos? This plugin would be great for accessibility purposes and adding transcripts to audio and video

Hi All,

I have a faculty member teaching a completely online, OER course this Fall with a connected group - site. She wants students to join the group to be automatically added to the site, and also so that she can email the class through the Commons. Students will be posting on the site blog sometimes. The professor will also post on the site blog to share announcements and updates.

Ideal situation: The professor would prefer if only admin posts were sent to the forum for dissemination via email.

As it stands with group-site functionality currently, every site post is auto sent to the group forum. There is a way to de-select/un-check "send to group blog" but it is unreasonable to assume that every student will remember to un-check this box every time.

So my questions:
- Is it possible to make the "send to group blog" by default "off" aka de-selected? This way the professor could just select or check the box when posting their own posts. I didn't see any options in the site settings to adjust this function, maybe because it is run by buddy press?
- Is there a way to set it up so that site admins can determine which user roles' posts are sent to group forum (aka only admin posts vs admins + authors + all users)?
- If not possible universally, could we trial run it on this site&group? (this seems unlikely but figured I would ask.)

Let me know if this makes sense and/or if more clarification and info is needed.

Maybe this site blog to group forum connection functionality is something we discuss in fall development conversation if we plan to tackle group interface this year.
