Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Outreach #14777 (Resolved): Email to faculty who create course groups and...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/147772021-09-14T18:23:17ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

Following up on the conversation in Friday's meeting about creating an outreach email to faculty who create groups and sites and indicate "teaching" in the purpose field. From our conversation, i think this email will focus on how to onboard students to the group/site. Do we want to include any other info in this email?

Also, I wanted to talk through how this email might be sent out. I think maybe there are two possibilities? Ideas below...

1: The outreach/documentation email is automated through the Commons. This could possibly be through a "teaching" group similar to how the group for group admins works. When someone creates a group/site with "teaching" purpose they are automatically added to the teaching group, and somehow (if possible?) the email gets automatically sent this way. But A- I am not sure if this is technically possible, and B- I can see this getting really messy; for example sometimes students select the "teaching" purpose for a course they created through a class (another issue for another time, maybe we need a "class project" purpose?). So this may be more technical lift and create more confusion but it also has benefit of automating the process (if possible)

2: I could manually send these emails to faculty from a list Boone provides at the start of each semester. This would probably require pulling data several times during the start of the semester to make sure we catch all faculty who have created course group/sites. It's a bit more work but it allows us to make sure faculty are receiving this email, and it adds the benefit of a direct connection between the faculty member and support for teaching with the commons.

I think I lean toward option 2 but would be interested to hear what you all think and if there might be other ways to do this.

Hi Boone/All,

I am wondering if we might be able to install a pre-configured SPLOT theme below, developed by Alan Levine. It allows for authoring on a site from the front end so that any visitor can add to the site.

TRUWriter theme: https://splot.ca/splots/tru-writer/

I am thinking about a project for collecting commons' user stories (geared towards faculty and students) that reflect on teaching and learning on the commons over the past year. Posts and stories can provide details using the commons during our shift to online teaching and learning and offer lessons to carry forward as we transition back into (partially) F2F teaching and learning in Fall 2021.

If we can install this theme, I will make the site visible only to commons users so only users could see and author posts/stories. I am hoping to add a field to indicate faculty/student and maybe an upload feature for faculty and students to share assignments or other artifacts. However, I won't know if I can make changes and add fields until I am able to get a look at theme.

I am not sure if this theme/idea presents security issues, so let me know what you think.

Hi All,

I know the Commons typically strips embed and iframe codes but sometimes we allow for custom embeds on certain sites.

A professor is requesting a github embed on his commons site, message below --

"I am trying to put together a microsite to showcase my students' work throughout the semester. The site will be built in Javascript and deployed in Github Pages and I was hoping to embed or iFrame it into our commons class page.

The link to embed will be at: https://interactivedatavis.github.io/Adv-Studio-Fall2020/ [interactivedatavis.github.io]
(currently it is just a duplication of last year's site, but it will be updated this weekend).
The commons link we would like to include the site on is: https://datavisstudiof2020.commons.gc.cuny.edu/category/posts/
"

Can we allow this embed on his site? Let me know if anymore information is needed.

Hi All,

We have a faculty request to upload an Open Document Presentation ODP file. I think these file types are currently blocked from upload. Is there a way we can allow ODP files to be uploaded? Would we want to allow this only on a specific site?

I am waiting on the faculty member to provide a link to the site where they want to upload these files.

Hi All,

I am working with the NYC Labor Market Information Service, a program at the GC, to move their site on to the Commons. When looking at other model sites, they really liked the Ocean WP theme (free: https://oceanwp.org/) as seen on this site: https://k16.cuny.edu/eci/

Can we add this theme to the Commons so they can use it on their new site?
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #11836 (Resolved): Invite and "Claim Key" Confusionhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/118362019-09-09T15:14:50ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A professor has reported confusion when students join the Commons. I am not exactly sure whats going on here...it might be that a student receives an email invite to join a site, clicks the link and registers for the Commons, and then goes back to the original email to try and join the course site? When the student checks their Profile>Invites there is an error message about a "claim key".

I'm not sure if this is a bug and/or how I should explain this situation to the professor. Any insight would be appreciated.

Excerpts from emails with the professor and student below:

Professor email: "So this is the 4th student who has contacted me about this exact issue. I think the invite link just no longer works once they've claimed it but they are all thinking there is something wrong or it didn't work, when it did."

Student email:
Good Evening professor,
I had some concerns regarding the CUNY commons website. I created an account however the invite link provided does not work. I can see this class listed under my "Sites" category which makes me wonder if it worked. I was just wondering if you could verify it for me. I attached the message that pops up when i try activating the invite link.

A new plugin adds the functionality to search and use CC-licensed images. This might be of interest and connect to our current work supporting OER and teaching on the Commons.

The plugin allows the author to search and use CC-lisensed images via a pop-up window in WordPress editor and the authors does not need to worry about copyright of images. This might also offer a space to add some pedagogical language about image use. something faculty ask about often.

Faculty members using the Reckoning plugin have noticed that they are unable to view the full summary of single user information.

When in User>User Summary there is a list of all site users with summarized content (screenshot1). Username should link to a page with all full length content in one page (screenshot 2 form B@B because unavailable on CAC). The username link is not working. When clicked it appears to load but then just defaults to the original user summary page. Issue is not allowing admins to view full length content.

Hi All,

Following up on this zen desk ticket: https://cunycommons.zendesk.com/agent/tickets/2807

When a Commons user sets up a new site using the teaching template, clicking into posts from the blog roll results in a 404 error. The teaching template comes with a static "home" page setup and posts re-routed to a page called posts. Luke has found that visiting Settings>Permalinks on a teaching template site will resolve the 404 error.

I was able to recreate this issue in the site linked below and I have not visited Settings>Permalinks so the error is not resolved.

https://testing404.commons.gc.cuny.edu/posts/

Also, can we add Luke as a watcher here? (I am not able to add watchers.)

During the group creation process, in step #3 when "enable group site" is selected, it creates double privacy option settings for the linked site (screenshot below). A selection cannot be made for both sections, users can only select 1 of the 10 options. So it appears that the selection component is working correctly but the privacy section should only appear once.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #10258 (Resolved): Media Library uploads visible to all users on ...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/102582018-08-29T19:48:45ZLaurie Hurson

All items uploaded to a site media library are visible to all users, not just administrators or the user who uploaded the media.

This is causing issues for professors who want students uploading images (of solutions to math problems) to a private homework post. Students (authors) are able to see other authors media, even though they are unable to see their private posts.

Is it possible to restrict authors' media library access/viewing to only images and media that they have uploaded?
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #8944 (Resolved): Hypothesis Plugin not working on media library PDFshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/89442017-11-28T16:41:33ZLaurie Hurson

The hypothesis plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/hypothesis/) allows Commons users to annotate pages, posts, and PDFs on the commons site. Several faculty members who will be using the Commons for teaching next spring have expressed interest in using this plugin to annotate pdfs on their course sites.

On each page or post, a menu should/will pop out to allow for highlights and annotations. In the backend, admins can select to have the plugin run on PDFs in the media library. However, it appears that this feature does not work on PDFs uploaded to a Commons site's media library. I have been testing this on https://coursetest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

I am not sure if this is a commons firewall issue but the plugin doesn't seem to work for PDFs on public or private sites.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #8746 (Resolved): Site Creation - additional Privacy Settings https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/87462017-09-27T19:57:15ZLaurie Hurson

Additional privacy settings are generated during site creation process when no site domain and site title are entered.

If you leave site domain and title blank or there is an issue with naming conventions (any privacy setting selected) and Click "Create site" you are sent to a new page with error message and must re-do. (screen 1)

However on this new page, new privacy settings are available "Privacy: I would like my site to appear in search engines, and in public listings around this network" [Buttons Yes -- No]" (screen 2)

Additional privacy settings are confusing and unnecessary. Furthermore, if a user then selects "No" (as is the case with "https://unionsfall17.commons.gc.cuny.edu/") the site is rendered unsearchable on the Commons and cannot be found.
