Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19376 (Resolved): New Help Email Processhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/193762023-12-06T17:39:30ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I wanted to give feedback on the process of submitting a help ticket through the new platform.

Previously when you clicked "Help" you got the options to 1.visit the help page or 2.Send us an email. The same happens now, but as a pop up box over the whole page. See screenshot. I think the email address should be listed in this box because of the issue outlined below.

The process for option 2 (email) has changed. Previously if option 2 was clicked it produced a pop up form to submit a ticket. Now if clicked, it opens a local email client. Users who don't use email clients will get stuck at this phase of the process and there is no way to copy an paste the email address because it is not listed in the previous screen. A user would need to seek out the email address at the bottom of the help page, copy/paste into their own email and then send.

Is there a way we can just direct users to https://cachelpdesk.org/ to submit a ticket. We could change the language around needing to register (ex: "for commons teams only") or create a similar user-facing page without the registration information.

We can ignore this suggestion for now and see if the help desk tickets continue to roll in at a similar pace but I worry that the new process is a bit confusing.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19192 (Resolved): New AI Assistant?https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/191922023-11-02T19:56:39ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I was creating a post and noticed that I had options to "Ask the AI Assistant". (!!) See screenshots.

"AI Assistant (Experimental)

Automatically generate and modify content, powered by AI magic.

The AI Assistant can be imprecise with information about people, places, or facts.

We are experimenting with this feature and can tweak or remove it at any point."

I think this is an experimental feature through Jetpack but wanted to flag it. I don't know if we can opt out of the AI assistant aspect of jetpack or turn it off? But I thought we should know this is happening and discuss as our users will likely see this.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19118 (Resolved): Created New Site --> Critical Errorhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/191182023-10-27T16:34:12ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I just created a new site https://oepi2024.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

And when I went to go to the site, I get a critical error. It appears the site has been created but I cannot reach it in firefox or chrome.

I believe Marilyn has a ticket in zendesk with a user reporting the same error.

HI All,

I was trying to look up a member of the Commons, and it appears the member search is not working correctly?

When I search by name, it doesn't seem to filter out unrelated members. See video.

I have tried in chrome and firefox and cleared my cache.

Is this user error or a bug? I thought we should be able to search by name, not just campus or role?
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #17905 (Resolved): Embedding Video Ant https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/179052023-03-28T15:33:24ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

VideoAnt is a free video annotation tool from University of Minnesota. Some professors are starting to use the tool and I am wondering if we can make it possible to embed VideoAnt videos on the Commons, ideally with the annotation sidebar so students could use the tool right directly on a Commons site.

Hi All,

As you may or may not know, CUNY has been transitioning all faculty, staff, and students to Microsoft Office 365 cloud. So instead of having Microsoft Office software, everyone now gets these tools and saves docs etc in the 365 cloud.

Someone in a training asked about embedding the Live cloud-hosted word docs into a commons site, similar to how Google docs works, so that when they update their Word doc the commons embed is also updated. This is different from how Word and the Commons works now, where faculty have to upload the static document.

Some examples of sharing links from a test cloud-hosted word doc:

Hi All,

A user is trying to use the hyper audio plugin and soundcloud audio links. They are experiencing issues with this plugin and included the attached screenshot) (waiting for more info)

I also test this plugin with soundcloud audio here: https://classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/hyperaudio-test/

I am unable to make the audio play when trying to use the plugin with Soundcloud, and I am unable to make a YouTube video play because it required the iframe embed code, which is stripped out.

Would it be possible to make this plugin functional with Soundcloud audio and YouTube videos? This plugin would be great for accessibility purposes and adding transcripts to audio and video

Hi All,

I added an event to test out the new events page. I added an Event "assignment hack-a-thon" in the TLC group for Friday Feb 17th 1-5. On the event page it is listed on the correct date but when you click into the event it says its on January 1, 1970. I am not sure where it is pulling this info from because I don't see anywhere else to update the event. Screenshots attached.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #17500 (Resolved): Embedding videos with Block editorhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/175002023-01-17T19:28:43ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

An ed tech at Hunter is working on a great teaching resource site for hunter faculty: https://weekzero.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

On the site, they are embedding a lot of videos from different sources and using the block editor to create nicely laid out pages. However, several of the embed codes for outside content does not work with block editor. The keep having to swtich betwen block/classic editor and this throws off the lay out.

Would it be possible to:

1. Update the voicethread embed process to be possible on block editor. (This doesn't work currently)
2. Create custom embed code/block for Adobe videos (example: https://express.adobe.com/video/xj6Gz)

Hi all,

I have noticed that when faculty make a connected group site, the entity only appears in the "my groups" list and they are confused about why their home page does not also indicate that they have a connected site. I think this is intended behavoir but I also find it really confusing and makes it more difficult for users to find the site.

Moreover, this has presented ongoing issues for me this semester when I have been teaching with the Commons. My students are members of the group/site but only use the site for the class and the group is reserved as an admin space where i use the forum to email students and store readings. Sutdents have been very confused as to why they have to click through the group to get to the site.

Can we revisit this set up where only the group of a connected group-site shows in the logged in home page?

Hi All,

On the community call today Anthony shared an idea that was suggested by a commons user about creating a set of plugins specifically related to site design. This could possibly be created by setting up a new "Design" plugin package.

The package might include:
A font plugin
A commonly used/easy-to-use slider plugin
Atomic blocks
What else?

Just throwing out some ideas above. Suggestions welcome, and I can do some research on plugins to include if we want to move forward.
CUNY Academic Commons - Documentation #11821 (Resolved): Broken link on commons documentation posthttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/118212019-09-04T14:26:36ZLaurie Hurson

A professor pointed out the the link to the "commons basics for teaching" on this news post is broken. https://news.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2018/08/27/teaching-on-the-commons/

The google doc looks like something I created but it may have been copied and then linked because the document is not in my Gdrive trash. I do not have access to this site so I cannot update the link myself. I made a copy with a working link that could replace the broken link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A5S61oL59EL4krPa_5m-CNtCE37G7TlwzDXcDawUJfM/edit?usp=sharing
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #11789 (New): Ability to remove item from Courses listhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/117892019-08-26T13:56:01ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I made a test course with the teaching template a few weeks ago called 'author name test". It was added to the courses list and I think it should be removed but I do not know how to remove it. I tried changing the "purpose" of the site but it remains in the courses tab list.

Should we have a way to remove courses from this list in case someone uses the teaching template but is not actually using the site for a course? Or should sites be removed from this list if the purpose is changed?
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #11208 (Resolved): Password Protected Page Not Working when page ...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/112082019-03-11T14:22:32ZLaurie Hurson

Hi all,

A professor wants to have a public site with a password protected blog so student writing is only visible to users in the class. The password-protect function works on a static page, but when set as the "posts" page in settings>reading the password function no longer works on the page.

Tested here on "blog" page: https://ell101spring19.commons.gc.cuny.edu/blog/
Pw: spring2019
CUNY Academic Commons - Documentation #10953 (Resolved): Help pages - Privacyhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/109532019-01-14T17:44:42ZLaurie Hurson

Referring to the help page here: https://help.commons.gc.cuny.edu/privacy-settings/

The screenshot is out of date and the lingo/path is misleading. For sites, privacy settings are now under Settings>Reading. This more recent path is often confusing to users. If users are looking for privacy, its not immediately clear that this will be located under reading, so it would be helpful if the help documentation reflected the correct path.
