Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #18023 (New): Access Isssueshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/180232023-04-13T15:05:34ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

We are getting a few messages on zendesk about the Commons being down. I am not seeing any issues site wide however one message was about the Segal center website:

https://thesegalcenter.org/

I am getting the "The CUNY Academic Commons is experiencing technical problems. For more details, visit the Commons status blog"
when I visit this mapped domain.

Can you provide insight and/or help resolve this?

Thank you!
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #17770 (New): Adding Fontshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/177702023-03-06T15:52:33ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

The folks working on the Oral History archive I mentioned on Friday are asking about adding fonts to the commons. From the user team:

"Would it be possible to add these fonts to the Commons system for our Land Use Organizing Oral History website? One is free and one needs to be purchased. Can I pay for the font that needs to be purchased? I’ve cc’ed my collaborator, Selina Byeon, here who is working on building the site."

The two fonts are:

Flash D Light (for headers and large text)
https://www.youworkforthem.com/font/T1087/flash/buying/

League Spartan (for sub-headers and body text)
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/League+Spartan?query=league+sparta

Are wew able to add these fonts? What is process for adding a paid tool? Do they need to purchase first and then we add?

Thanks for you help.

Hi All,

We have some folks working on an oral history project here: https://mbkoharchive.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Most of the audio files work fine but there are a few that wont play. For example on the elder page, most of the files play except "Kevin Dantzler" and "Superintendent Dr. Raymond Sanchez"
here: https://mbkoharchive.commons.gc.cuny.edu/home/

Are you able to investigate if this might be a bug on the site?

The admins have also encountered issue with uploading a 119MB audio file - is there a file size limit in place?

thanks!
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #17311 (Resolved): Access to sitehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/173112022-11-29T16:43:56ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

In a meeting I just had with a faculty member, I was added as an admin to this site: https://cmcs.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

I was already an author because I had joined the group but it appears my role did not update. Perhaps there is a bug here that restricted my role from getting updated from author to admin?

Thanks in advance for help with this.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #15923 (Reporter Feedback): Bellows Plugin Adjustmentshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/159232022-04-18T16:41:35ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

The folks at the GC Writing Center are working on building out a series of writing/revision resources on their website here:

https://gcwritingcenter.commons.gc.cuny.edu/revision-strategies/

They are using the Bellows plugin to create the sidebar menu you see on the left of that page and other pages clicked on through the menu.

They were wondering if it would be possible to make some adjustments to how the plugin works. It would be ideal if the sidebar menu:

- highlights which page a user is on.
Meaning if you are on RS argument, the background color of the sidebar menu highlights this page.

- show the the path the user took to arrive at each page.
Meaning, at the top each page the breadcrumbs info shows the top level and lower level menu items that lead to that page. For example if I was on this page https://gcwritingcenter.commons.gc.cuny.edu/rs_ventilation/ the breadcrumbs at the top would be "Home > RS Style > rs_ventilation"

I am not sure what our policy is on editing plugins for single use cases but these changes to Bellows seemed simple enough and potentially useful for other users.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #15509 (Rejected): Comments and Image Errorhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/155092022-03-02T15:19:05ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A professor would like students to post comments on each others posts on this site: https://eng430blitz.commons.gc.cuny.edu

It appears that new posts are not open for comment even though the Settings>Discussion indicate they should be. There are only ~10 recent posts that need to have comments turned on, but students will be posting all semester and all future posts need to allow comments as well.

When I try to bulk edit Posts to Allow Comments, I get an error about an image. Screenshot attached.

I am not sure why this image error is restricting comments, or if this is even the problem, but the two issues do seem to be connected.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #15251 (Resolved): Add "Ultra" themehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/152512022-02-03T16:31:44ZLaurie Hurson

Hi Boone, Ray, All,

I am meeting with librarians and staff from Queens College later this week to talk about the use of Q-Writing and the Commons on their campus. I spoke with them last semester and they had asked about some form of migration or archiving of Q writing on the Commons.

Some background: Q Writing is a Wordpress multi-site platform that the Queens College Center for Teaching and Learning set up years ago. As far as I can tell, it is not as consistently used or maintained as the Commons or other campus-specific Wordpress platforms throughout CUNY. The Queens college folks have asked about the "possibility of incorporating QC’s current WordPress MU site into the Commons." Qwriting currently has 8,195 sites and 22,538 users.

I told them migrating or archiving Q writing in the Commons was probably not possible but when I spoke to Matt briefly about it, he mentioned I should ask about HTML flattening or other possibilities. The Queens college folks had thought about setting up a CBOX to replace Q writing but I told them, and they likely already knew, that setting CBOX presented that same maintenance and sustainability issues they were already experiencing.

Any insight about possibilities for archiving, flattening, etc would be appreciated. Even if we can only do some of the sites (or none), that would be helpful for me to know and share with them when we meet on Thursday.

Thanks!
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #14878 (Rejected): Bulk delete forum replieshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/148782021-10-19T13:59:22ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I met with the City Collegee OER team last week and they had a question about bulk deleting forum replies (but not topics).

They re-use the same OER Fellowship group each semester to facilitate their OER faculty development program. Because they have built out the assignments as forum topics and are linking to these assignment forum topics from the site they like the reuse the group (keeping the URL and prompts the same) and removing/adding users for each new fellow group/semester.

Site:https://citycollegeoer.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Group:https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/ccny-oer-workshop/

I do not believe cloning will not work here because they would like to keep the URL the same.

Is there a way to build delete replies to forum posts so they can keep their group and forum topics the same semester to semester but clear out responses to the assignments.

It seems strange to me that they would want to delete faculty work each semester so I will circle back and ask about this tactic but knowing if there is a bulk delete replies feature would be helpful either way. And/or I am open to hearing about other ideas for the keeping the group URL the same while allowing reuse of forum topics.

Hi All,

Can we add the Conference and OER showcase pages to the main menu on the Commons? I have access to create pages on the main site but am not sure how to add them to this main menu. I don't want to try and mess something up.

Two showcase pages to add to main menu, under "About":

Conference:https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/conferences-on-the-commons/
OER: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/open-educational-resource-projects-on-the-commons/

Hi All,

A Commons user is trying to build out the SPS faculty community site and she is unable to see the "Appearance" section of the dashboard. Screenshot attached.

I was also an admin on this site and am no longer able to access the Dashboard.

I saw in ticket 12157 Colin was also removed as admin on a site. Could these be related issues to role changes?

Hi All,

Following up on our accessibility conversation from the recent team meeting...

One of the most common issues on the Commons is the prevalence of redundant links throughout many of the directory pages. Redundant links are an issue because often screen readers navigate by jumping through the links on a page.

Common places where redundant links appear:
- On the Home page in the "Group" and "People" rolls the image and title text link to same place
- In My commons, and sites and group directory pages, avatar and Title text link to same place

Boone suggested that various types of redundant link pairs might require different solutions and I think i recall and aria roll being mentioned. I think starting with these pages would be great for now but I can also provide additional information about where this might be happening across the Commons.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #11833 (Resolved): CC Image Pluginhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/118332019-09-06T15:28:33ZLaurie Hurson

A new plugin adds the functionality to search and use CC-licensed images. This might be of interest and connect to our current work supporting OER and teaching on the Commons.

The plugin allows the author to search and use CC-lisensed images via a pop-up window in WordPress editor and the authors does not need to worry about copyright of images. This might also offer a space to add some pedagogical language about image use. something faculty ask about often.

WordPress repository plugin’s page: https://wordpress.org/plugins/ls-wp-ccsearch/

More in this blog post in opensource.creativecommons.org

This is a very new plugin so we may want to wait while bugs are worked out - I got this info from an email on the WP-EDU listserv.
CUNY Academic Commons - Documentation #11821 (Resolved): Broken link on commons documentation posthttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/118212019-09-04T14:26:36ZLaurie Hurson

A professor pointed out the the link to the "commons basics for teaching" on this news post is broken. https://news.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2018/08/27/teaching-on-the-commons/

The google doc looks like something I created but it may have been copied and then linked because the document is not in my Gdrive trash. I do not have access to this site so I cannot update the link myself. I made a copy with a working link that could replace the broken link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A5S61oL59EL4krPa_5m-CNtCE37G7TlwzDXcDawUJfM/edit?usp=sharing
