Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #12519 (Resolved): Registration and Home Page links on Mobilehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/125192020-03-09T18:08:02ZLaurie Hurson

Hi all,

I was in a Guttman class this morning to help register students. Many students were registering using their phones and several problems became apparent. In an intro email from the professor, students were given a link to the public course site. They clicked the link to their public course site and then tried to find the register page. Issues:

1. If viewing a public site and you click "log in", it appears that only already registered users can log in. You cannot register from there or click a link to go to register. Can we add a link to registration here?

2. Most sites do not build a way to get to the commons home page. This means there is no way to get to the commons homepage and registration from most sites. To complicate things, the logo in the footer (on mobile) does not lead you to the commons home page. If you click another link in the footer, you get to the main commons pages, but not the home page. And again, the logo does not link to the commons home page where the registration link is so you are can reach various commons pages but never the home page.

On mobile the commons logo appears in various places but never seems to link to the home page. Several students were stuck in a constant loop of commons pages but could never get to the home page to click register. Screenshot example. We got around this by going to the help section, where the logo does lead to the homepage.

Maybe this was an outcome of the accessibility audit and redundant links but I think it is important to make it easier to navigate to the registration page and make the commons logo universally link to the home page. This function might become especially important in upcoming days if professors begin shifting aspects of their course online and ask students to register for the Commons.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #12278 (Resolved): Cannot acces dashboard due to "Critical Error" https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/122782020-01-09T21:00:27ZLaurie Hurson

I was just working with a faculty member who was building out their course site. When they changed the theme they could no longer access the dashboard and received the message about a "critical error".

Any insight on this? It might be a cache issue but i wanted to submit a ticket to see if there might be another explanation.

Hi All,

I think this might be related to the issue discussed on the dev call yesterday and mentioned in the ticket #12165. I had some trouble following the specifics but I think I understood that its related to the deletion of users from sites or the wiping of the user roles on a site?

In this case, a Commons user is trying to access a site on which he is an admin. He can view the site in My Sites but when he clicks he is re-directed to the Commons page.

His user name is "fcanela" and the site he is trying to access is https://fcpd.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Hi All,

A professor has reported confusion when students join the Commons. I am not exactly sure whats going on here...it might be that a student receives an email invite to join a site, clicks the link and registers for the Commons, and then goes back to the original email to try and join the course site? When the student checks their Profile>Invites there is an error message about a "claim key".

I'm not sure if this is a bug and/or how I should explain this situation to the professor. Any insight would be appreciated.

Excerpts from emails with the professor and student below:

Professor email: "So this is the 4th student who has contacted me about this exact issue. I think the invite link just no longer works once they've claimed it but they are all thinking there is something wrong or it didn't work, when it did."

Student email:
Good Evening professor,
I had some concerns regarding the CUNY commons website. I created an account however the invite link provided does not work. I can see this class listed under my "Sites" category which makes me wonder if it worked. I was just wondering if you could verify it for me. I attached the message that pops up when i try activating the invite link.

If a user goes to Settings > Writing to change the default editor from Block to Classic, when they attempt to save these changes they receive the error in the screenshot below. I have tried this myself and two other users have reported the error to me. Any idea what's going on here? Many users (professors) prefer to make the classic editor the default since the block editor is much more confusing for students (and more inaccessible.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #11200 (Resolved): User Summary (Reckoning plugin) not linking to sin...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/112002019-03-07T19:58:20ZLaurie Hurson

Faculty members using the Reckoning plugin have noticed that they are unable to view the full summary of single user information.

When in User>User Summary there is a list of all site users with summarized content (screenshot1). Username should link to a page with all full length content in one page (screenshot 2 form B@B because unavailable on CAC). The username link is not working. When clicked it appears to load but then just defaults to the original user summary page. Issue is not allowing admins to view full length content.

Hi All,

Marilyn is incorrectly listed as the instructor for the course "HIS127 Microhistories: Latin America" (screenshot 1) on page three of the courses tab (https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/courses/page/3/). She is an admin for the group but she shouldn't be listed as an instructor. Is there any indication as to why the system is pulling her name as the instructor? I don;t think we want all admins on sites/groups listed as instructors since this would be misleading.

I tried to correct this through the courses backend (https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=cac_course&paged=2) but for some reason I cannot see any information associated with this course (screenshot 2).

Somewhat unrelated: is it possible to sort the courses by semester or date added? When displayed alphabetically (as it is now) the same courses consistently appear on the first page.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #11023 (Resolved): Teaching Template Sites: Posts return 404 Errorhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/110232019-01-28T16:11:29ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

Following up on this zen desk ticket: https://cunycommons.zendesk.com/agent/tickets/2807

When a Commons user sets up a new site using the teaching template, clicking into posts from the blog roll results in a 404 error. The teaching template comes with a static "home" page setup and posts re-routed to a page called posts. Luke has found that visiting Settings>Permalinks on a teaching template site will resolve the 404 error.

I was able to recreate this issue in the site linked below and I have not visited Settings>Permalinks so the error is not resolved.

https://testing404.commons.gc.cuny.edu/posts/

Also, can we add Luke as a watcher here? (I am not able to add watchers.)

During the group creation process, in step #3 when "enable group site" is selected, it creates double privacy option settings for the linked site (screenshot below). A selection cannot be made for both sections, users can only select 1 of the 10 options. So it appears that the selection component is working correctly but the privacy section should only appear once.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #10700 (Resolved): White screen: page not loading/renderinghttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/107002018-11-13T22:25:59ZLaurie Hurson

Hi Boone,

As you know, the past Hypothesis issue was resolved by clarifying that hypothesis only works on Media Library PDFs if the site visibility is listed as public.

I am having issues with Hypothesis not running on PDFs on a publicly visible site here: https://anasar.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Specifically, the PDFs are on this page are not working: https://anasar.commons.gc.cuny.edu/mat-216-course-materials/ .

I'm not sure if its because the PDFs are so big? Or because they originally had hyperlinks embedded within them (as anchors tags)? I also noticed that the PDF URLs include a /blogs.dir/ element and I'm not sure if that (or some URL issue) is causing an problem?

Sorry if this is a simple front-end-ish fix that I am just missing.

Thanks in advance for you help.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #8944 (Resolved): Hypothesis Plugin not working on media library PDFshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/89442017-11-28T16:41:33ZLaurie Hurson

The hypothesis plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/hypothesis/) allows Commons users to annotate pages, posts, and PDFs on the commons site. Several faculty members who will be using the Commons for teaching next spring have expressed interest in using this plugin to annotate pdfs on their course sites.

On each page or post, a menu should/will pop out to allow for highlights and annotations. In the backend, admins can select to have the plugin run on PDFs in the media library. However, it appears that this feature does not work on PDFs uploaded to a Commons site's media library. I have been testing this on https://coursetest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

I am not sure if this is a commons firewall issue but the plugin doesn't seem to work for PDFs on public or private sites.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #8746 (Resolved): Site Creation - additional Privacy Settings https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/87462017-09-27T19:57:15ZLaurie Hurson

Additional privacy settings are generated during site creation process when no site domain and site title are entered.

If you leave site domain and title blank or there is an issue with naming conventions (any privacy setting selected) and Click "Create site" you are sent to a new page with error message and must re-do. (screen 1)

However on this new page, new privacy settings are available "Privacy: I would like my site to appear in search engines, and in public listings around this network" [Buttons Yes -- No]" (screen 2)

Additional privacy settings are confusing and unnecessary. Furthermore, if a user then selects "No" (as is the case with "https://unionsfall17.commons.gc.cuny.edu/") the site is rendered unsearchable on the Commons and cannot be found.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #7623 (Resolved): bbPress Forum and "Add users" widget User Rolehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/76232017-02-03T23:08:08ZLaurie Hurson

As reported by a CAC Faculty Fellow:

"he issue I’m having is a conflict regarding user roles between the “Add Users Sidebar Widget” and bbPress. Under Forum Settings for bbPress, if Auto-Role is defined to automatically give registered visitors the participant role in forums, anyone who visits the site is automatically given the role “participant” under both Site Role and Forum Role. So even if I have Add Users configured, it never asks for the password to join the site because everyone is automatically joined as “participant”. This means that they cannot post as author. But if I uncheck “Auto-Role” for bbPress, forums can’t even be seen, let alone participated in.

When I deactivate bbPress, Add Users works as it should, so I think this is a bbPress bug."
