Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #17478 (Resolved): Commons downhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/174782023-01-12T04:53:15ZColin McDonald

Just noticing this and wanted to report.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #15153 (Resolved): Main nav Courses link brokenhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/151532022-01-05T22:02:42ZColin McDonald

Clicking the Courses top nav item on public or logged-in, it goes to a redirect and broken page:

https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/courses/

Starting a new ticket for this one since it's so prominent, though I know we've had other nav item issues.
CUNY Academic Commons - Design/UX #13665 (Resolved): Alter "new" dismissable message for cloninghttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/136652020-12-08T16:26:47ZColin McDonald

With the group cloning release today, should we edit the yellow message over the Create portal? See below/attached for what it says right now:

NEW: CLONE A SITE
We added a new feature for signed in admins. You can now clone one of your existing sites (whether paired with a Group or not) after clicking the "Create a Site" or "Create a Group + Site" buttons below.

We could change it to:

NEW: CLONING
We added a new feature for signed-in admins. You can now clone one of your existing Groups or Sites (including a Connected Group + Site) after clicking any of the blue "Create" buttons below.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #13371 (Resolved): Show item folders in Library listhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/133712020-09-24T04:24:34ZColin McDonald

Breaking this off of #12821 and our Sept group meeting discussion of the importance of being able to see item folders in the main/list Library view. Professors want students to be able to see at the top level how items are organized, and the folders that are active. Potentially one could click on the folder name to go into that folder's contents as well. Could this be a separate column in the list view, or something else? Sonja is a watcher here and said she had ideas about this.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #13198 (Resolved): Group cloninghttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/131982020-08-14T19:08:29ZColin McDonald

I'm starting this ticket to consolidate our initial planning on building group cloning for our next release to pair with the site cloning that we just put out. A few points:

- Duplicating the Library seems to be the most important piece, thinking about the use cases of departments or professors with a lot of assets stored there that they want to make available to a cloned group (different team, semester, etc). But we have similar concerns as site cloning with attribution and permission. Some professors have students upload assignments to a group, for example. Those shouldn't be duplicated. Perhaps it's a similar thing where only Library items uploaded by an admin get duplicated, and the same notification of admins about duplication that we did for cloned sites?

- Could this also be the same for any Forum topics created by an admin, in case admins want to carry over Forum topics like trainings or writing prompts? Maybe this could be optional.

- How do we manage the cloning of a group connected to a site? Can we combine the interface such that you can clone a site and then clone its connected group to get a full Group+Site clone? Or perhaps it's best to clone each thing separately and then connect them later?

- For members, in most cases I think a cloned group admin will want to start over with invites. Like a new semester of students, etc. But in some cases, like a department or project team, maybe not. Is it best to just make people re-invite in the latter case, and not replicate group members at all when cloning?

- Events and Digital Research Tools don't need to be cloned (and should either be deprecated, especially with the dominance of outside calendar services?)
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #13149 (Resolved): Library search widget broken by new services platformhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/131492020-08-04T19:15:41ZColin McDonald

Yesterday CUNY libraries a new "services platform," and the central change to me seems to be a new catalog setup that requires searches for library items to go through OneSearch:

https://libguides.brooklyn.cuny.edu/newLSP

An unfortunate upshot is that this breaks the library search that we offer for the sidebar and other widget areas on sites like these:

https://anth1105santos.commons.gc.cuny.edu
https://socy3304.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

And a good many more sites. Is there anything to do to fix this, or is it perhaps too big a task and we disable? Not sure too if this affects other integrations with the Library, as it seems all links to the old catalog are broken now.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #13147 (Resolved): Can't underline in forum posthttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/131472020-08-04T19:08:56ZColin McDonald

I just posted a list with underlined items to the CAC team forum (screenshot attached) that rendered the underline in the preview but then just showed underline tags once published. Not sure if that's the case with italics too, but bold seemed to come through fine. I've already gone back and edited the original post so it's more readable.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #13027 (Resolved): Extraneous add doc button on profile pagehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/130272020-07-08T14:38:29ZColin McDonald

Hello, Scott discovered a Add A Doc button (see attached) in the Commons profile when you go to the page showing docs that you either started or edited. We're thinking we can probably just remove that.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #12563 (Resolved): Homepage banner for COVID help/resourceshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/125632020-03-20T16:56:25ZColin McDonald

Following up on the call discussion, let's get started here on a non-dismissible homepage banner to direct teachers to our resources for getting started on the Commons, particularly for distance learning right now.

Sonja, can you propose a design and location for us, perhaps based on what other sites are doing with these kinds of notifications? We'll tweak the actual banner language but I think we could use, "COVID support: Distance-learning help for new Commons teachers."

Here is a Google Doc I started to produce the page copy we'll link to. Thanks!

Hello, starting this ticket per Sonja's request on the dev call to break it out from our main ticket #3176 and focus only on the flow for adding a new item in the new Library design. We'll need to account for adding the different item Types -- File, Doc and Link i.e. external source -- and adding the metadata or content needed for each. I've attached the mockup Sonja did for this few revisions ago as a starting point. We'll need to add more copy I'm sure, but perhaps we clean up this mock first and go over any tech issues.
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #12157 (Resolved): Courses slideshow access/planninghttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/121572019-12-01T19:32:38ZColin McDonald

Hey Boone, I think my Commons account (colinmcd) may need access to these links you mentioned on the production site. Or I need access on the dev site, which might not matter once the release happens. I realized I wasn't quite sure where these links were live:

https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=cac_course (find the courses you want to feature)
https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=cac_course&page=cac-courses-featured (enter the IDs of those courses)

If you just want to make this course live when we release, I can confirm that this has a featured image and we have permission to use it:
https://sochiphop.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

I am pretty sure that we can use this course of Krysia's as well, and it has a featured image:
https://eng110michael.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

I will have other courses with permission that I can add myself by Wednesday, if that works. By the way, what is the "ID" of a course, specifically? Let me know what else I can do here, thanks.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #12143 (Resolved): Order drop-down not changinghttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/121432019-11-25T17:08:10ZColin McDonald

Moving this from the Commons team forum testing thread, I'm having trouble using the ordering drop-down in the new Courses tab. I'm on a Mac, and while it worked fine in Firefox, in Chrome (77.0.3865.120) and Safari (Version 13.0.3) I'm having trouble getting a new selection in the drop-down to register and load. The URLs for a new selections don't seem to load. See the screen recordings attached.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #12134 (Resolved): Site cloninghttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/121342019-11-22T18:32:45ZColin McDonald

Hello, starting a fresh ticket here to consolidate our discussions on this feature for the spring 2020 release. In the group meeting last Friday we narrowed down our plan for this.

We want to focus on sites for now as groups have many more content types. And our main use case will be professors looking to clone their own sites, i.e. for a new semester's class. There may be a side use case where a professor clones their site for someone else (like someone teaching another section), but the main idea is that we're not doing shared cloning where someone can clone any site they'd like. There are a lot of technical and permissions issues there. The cloning will be initiated by a current admin of the site, and they'll be the admin of the clone (which they could then invite a new admin to).

We need to talk about what will and won't be carried over when cloning. We don't want people to have to go back and delete a bunch of things on the clone to get it ready, or of course for student content to be carried over (for privacy reasons, but also to have a clean slate for new students).

Other questions are whether cloned pages should be in draft form first or live, and whether plugins are carried over as well. Boone, do you have any opinions about those, or about how we might set cloning up as sort of a branch of the Wordpress Import/Export feature where you choose different types of content to be carried over?

Once we hash out a few more technical questions here, and anything else I'm forgetting, Sonja perhaps we could talk about how this might be best designed for people to make use of it.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #12065 (Resolved): Tinyletter in sidebar widgethttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/120652019-11-13T16:34:32ZColin McDonald

As a final step in the newsletter plugin transition covered more in #11878 and #11647, I'm working with the CPCP (https://cpcp.commons.gc.cuny.edu/) to put a signup box in the sidebar of their homepage linked to their new Tinyletter account. The code provided by Tinyletter is below. When I try to add it as a Custom HTML widget in Wordpress, I'm told that the and tags aren't allowed. Perhaps we can do a workaround or simple custom widget on this? I believe there's already some code out there from others, like here: https://github.com/frebro/wp-tinyletter-widget

<form style="border:1px solid #ccc;padding:3px;text-align:center;" action="https://tinyletter.com/cpcp" method="post" target="popupwindow" onsubmit="window.open('https://tinyletter.com/cpcp', 'popupwindow', 'scrollbars=yes,width=800,height=600');return true"><p><label for="tlemail">Enter your email address</label></p><p><input type="text" style="width:140px" name="email" id="tlemail" /></p><input type="hidden" value="1" name="embed"/><input type="submit" value="Subscribe" /><p><a href="https://tinyletter.com" target="_blank">powered by TinyLetter</a></p></form>

CUNY Academic Commons - Support #11986 (Resolved): Permitted file types for group vs. site uploadhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/119862019-10-16T21:09:06ZColin McDonald

Hello, I was looking at a separate project for Brooklyn College and noticed that in the Files area of a Group, media file types like .mp4 and .mp3 cannot be uploaded, while they go through just fine when uploading to the Media Library of a Site (provided it's under the 40MB threshold for each individual file). Is that by design? If so, I'm curious about the reasoning.

If it helps, the project I'm working on involves students uploading audio and video recordings from field work, and there was interest in a private area where the class could collect such files. I know that something like Dropbox or Google Drive would be a possible solution, but the Commons offers the ability to link directly to uploaded files in an external service like a podcast feed, which is also of interest.
