Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Support #19366 (New): Commons help email addresshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/193662023-12-04T15:15:33ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

Hi Scott -- thanks so much for all of the work you did to help us transition to a new help system. I know I'm being super picky here, but how big of a deal would it be for us to create a new gmail address that is commonshelp@gmail.com as opposed to commonshelpsite@gmail.com?
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #16307 (New): Add brief messaging to accept/decline group membership ...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/163072022-06-27T22:13:20ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

This is not a huge issue, but when I decline a group membership request, I usually like to write to the person who made the request to tell them why I had to decline. Currently, there is no way to do that other than going to the person's profile and sending a message through it. we might want to add a space for messaging to the decline action, so that people receive the decline notification along with a rationale. But maybe this is too small an edge case to be worth of development -- I'd guess this happens only a few times a year
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #13949 (New): Continued debugging of runaway MySQL connectionshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/139492021-02-07T00:47:10ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

Hi Boone,

FYI -- there were MySQL restart alerts at 4:11pm today. I wanted to let you know in case you are better able to track info related to such outages following our recent conversations with Lihua
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #9941 (Assigned): Wiki functionalityhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/99412018-06-15T18:08:47ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

Luke and I are meeting with someone from Brooklyn College, who brought up a request for wiki or wiki-like functionality on the CAC. This is the third or fourth such request I've heard in the last week. It may very well be motivated by the closing of Wikispaces, which was used often by faculty. (and we know that's what motivated the CUNY Office of Institutional Research to use the Commons).

I am NOT suggesting that we re-start or re-integrate MediaWiki into the CAC. But I am curious what we can tell people who want to use the Commons but are hoping to have wiki-like functionality. Can we use this ticket to explore possible lines of advice? I know that we have one wiki plugin on the CAC, but I think it requires a wiki to be hosted elsewhere and just displays the content on a CAC blog.

I've added a bunch of members of the team to this ticket for comment.
CUNY Academic Commons - Outreach #9015 (Assigned): Email group admins the email addresses of thei...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/90152017-12-16T13:07:06ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

At the CAT committee meeting yesterday, we discussed the new customized email addresses for groups. One person spoke up to say that this was exactly the issue that had confounded faculty at her campus, and she suggested we get the word out aggressively about this feature.

Her suggestion, which I like, is that we email all group admins the email addresses for their groups, along with a draft message to post to their groups if they wish.

I'm happy to draft text for such a message, but I wanted to check on the feasibility of this. Could we pull from the database to get:
1. group admin names
2. group admin emails
3. group titles
4. email addresses for groups

so that we could send such an email?

We could simply post to the group for group admins, but doing so wouldn't give group admins customized info for the groups they administer

One danger to doing this is that people who admin lots of groups will get lots of emails. We may also hear from people running defunct groups, asking for our help in closing them. but maybe that wouldn't be so bad.
CUNY Academic Commons - Documentation #8666 (Assigned): Create Teaching on the Commons Resource Pagehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/86662017-09-06T16:52:50ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

Hi Scott,

Per our discussion at our last meeting, I'd like to create a page on the CAC that we can circulate when we tell people that they can now teach courses on the Commons. The page should have sections like the following (to be discussed here):

Why Teach on the Commons

Getting Started

choosing a model -- group + blog? blog only?

hub/spoke vs. central site blogging?

onboarding a class

Setting up/using a group
*FAQ

Who can teach?

integrations (integrating third party services -- youtube, timelines, hosted media spaces, hypothesis)

Visibility

Resources

Sample teaching sites on the Commons

digital pedagogy resources

I've cc'ed Luke, Lisa, and Paul Hebert on this. I think, Scott, that we'll be able to get you some help on this, but if you could take point on it, I would appreciate it.
Per ticket 3660, we will have to use the Zendesk web widget starting Nov 2016. Ray told me that the team did not like that widget due to its lack of customization.
Hi Sam,

Are there changes in layout/color/design/alignment/sizing that you can suggest to improve the appearance of events calendars that contain multiple events on a single day? Please see the attached screenshot and this link - http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/gc-events-and-workshops/events/ - for an example. It looks pretty crowded to me and also hard to even tell that there are multiple events in a single box. We might look to how GCal handles this for guidance
CUNY Academic Commons - Design/UX #4404 (Assigned): Change color of permissions info on portfolio...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/44042015-08-08T12:31:35ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

Right now, when users go to edit their portfolios, information about who can see that info appears in red (see attached screenshot). Since this info suggests something that the people highlighted CAN see, I think it should be green rather than red. Sam, do you agree?

Samantha, I'd like to ask you to review the CBOX update/upgrade process. I just upgraded a few installations, and I found that the process could be improved. Here are my concerns:

-- Are all the steps one must take to update CBOX clear to users?
-- After one updates the main plugin, are there other upgrade steps needed for CBOX plugins? If so, is that process clear?
-- Is it clear that one needs to upgrade the optional CBOX theme after upgrading the plugin manager?
-- how might the upgrade process be improved with better visual cues and step-by-step guidelines?

Hi Scott,

Can you do a news blog or codex blog or other post that draws together some of our hero slides and documentation and puts them together into a list of things one can do when building a new community / blog / group resource on the Commons? Here is a starting point:

1. Google Analytics
Get GA reports for your Commons blog mailed to you on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis (note: may not work with domain-mapped blogs)
http://news.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2012/06/23/introducing-google-analytics-for-your-blog/

2. Custom cuny.is shortlinks
Create a custom cuny.is shortlink for your blog or group
http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/cuny-url-shortener/

3. Site Newsletters
Use Mailpoet to create attractive newsletters derived from your blog content
http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2013/12/08/create-newsletters-wp-site-mailpoet/

4. Domain Mapping on the Commons
Map a custom domain to your Commons blog
http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/domain-mapping-commons/

5. Use the Commons as a Conference Hub
With free websites, domain mapping, and tools to facilitate publicity, planning and registration, you can create a hub to post agendas, discuss issues, aggregate tweets, live-stream presentations, share archives, and keep the conversation going.
http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2014/03/06/got-conference-coming-host-commons/

6. Invite People to your group
http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2014/02/02/invitations-commons-groups-group-blogs/

7. Twitter Page
Discover CUNY-related tweets and twitter-users
http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/twitter/
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #364 (New): Bulletin Boardhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/3642010-10-06T03:58:00ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

Hi All,

I've had a few people contact me to ask about where they might post announcements. I know we've talked about something like this in the past, but here are a few ideas:

1. A general area where people could post announcements. We could have a checkbox on sign up that asks people whether they want to subscribe by email
2. A craigslist type bulletin board -- perhaps done through a group, but is access more through the forum interface than through a group interface
3. A general group for announcements.

What do you all think? I think that, generally, it should be an easy to use space that allows opt-in subscriptions.
