Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19966 (Reporter Feedback): Slow Load Time on Sitehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199662024-03-13T14:43:08ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A user is developing a robust program website for a GC department. Right now it is on a dev domain and he plans to clone the site into the final domain soon. But first he is hoping to resolve the slow load times he is noticing on the site:

https://lmistest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

-
From the User:

I am just getting really slow load times, and a lot of times, images don’t load. I was worried that I had clogged the site with too many images or something...

I have a lot of images currently uploaded to the site, especially a few big splash images, which I will ultimately delete, as I was just using these for drafts. However, we will be writing about 40 descriptions of projects we have worked on, and each one will have at least one (smaller) image, so I worry about the site slowing down even more?

I also worry it has to do with how many changes I made to the underlying theme (I’m currently using “Raft”)? I would really like to switch the theme to just a Wordpress Twenty Twenty-Four theme, but I spent a lot of time tweaking margins and padding etc. to make things look how I wanted them, so I don’t want to start from scratch… That said, if it’s an issue with the images, maybe the theme doesn’t have much to do with it?

-

I ran the site through a free (questionably accurate) load time checker and it did report the site was very slow. Can you all confirm slow load time and help diagnose what might be causing this?

From a WS ticket:

I am currently facing an issue while attempting to edit the sidebar to display the course information on my page: https://kcccebioblitz.commons.gc.cuny.edu/. Despite my efforts to modify the content, the sidebar editing option seems to be inaccessible, and I can’t update the preset from my Dashboard.
To provide further context, I have attached an image illustrating the specific area of concern. Unfortunately, I am unable to locate the sidebar editing feature within the editing interface.
I would greatly appreciate your assistance in resolving this matter. If there are specific steps or tools, I need to use to access the sidebar editing options, kindly guide me through the process.
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #18982 (Reporter Feedback): Sites missing pages, menus, icons, ba...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/189822023-10-05T23:52:11ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

Hi All,

A faculty member is hoping to connect this group and site:

Site:https://intro2cwconroy.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
Group: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/220-introduction-to-creative-writing-745070447/

The site was previously connected to another group and she deleted the group because she was not sure how to uncouple. I think the site is still reading as connected to the deleted group because the site does not come up as visible to connect to the new group.

Is there a way to uncouple the site from the deleted group so it can be connected to this new group?

Hi All,

The release of the OER tag and the Open Education institute I ran in June has highlighted some issues with the Creative Commons license widget we are running on the commons, particularly on sites.

By default, every page of every site site is tagged with a CC license. I think we should revisit that. People may want some of their content openly licensed but not all of it. For example, Raffi Khatchadourian wrote to the Zendesk asking how to list some of his pages on his main site as oer but not all of the pages. Currently this is not really possible - the CC license is only available on a page by page basis or it encompasses the whole site. I am proposing we allow CC for some pages and no clear open license on other pages (hence signifying they are not open).

I think the automatic, by default tagging of every page as CC, regardless of whether a user has chosen the CC license knowingly, is an issue.

This also raises questions about creating an option to allows folks to restrict some of their work. Maybe we don't want to provide a "closed" option but this could also occur through simply not applying a CC license by default to every page and allowing a user to knowingly assign the CC license to only "open" content.

I think all of these issues, ideas, and options warrant a discussion, which hopefully we can pick up in the fall.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #15923 (Reporter Feedback): Bellows Plugin Adjustmentshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/159232022-04-18T16:41:35ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

The folks at the GC Writing Center are working on building out a series of writing/revision resources on their website here:

https://gcwritingcenter.commons.gc.cuny.edu/revision-strategies/

They are using the Bellows plugin to create the sidebar menu you see on the left of that page and other pages clicked on through the menu.

They were wondering if it would be possible to make some adjustments to how the plugin works. It would be ideal if the sidebar menu:

- highlights which page a user is on.
Meaning if you are on RS argument, the background color of the sidebar menu highlights this page.

- show the the path the user took to arrive at each page.
Meaning, at the top each page the breadcrumbs info shows the top level and lower level menu items that lead to that page. For example if I was on this page https://gcwritingcenter.commons.gc.cuny.edu/rs_ventilation/ the breadcrumbs at the top would be "Home > RS Style > rs_ventilation"

I am not sure what our policy is on editing plugins for single use cases but these changes to Bellows seemed simple enough and potentially useful for other users.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #14629 (Reporter Feedback): Possible Post Order Bug?https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/146292021-07-26T14:58:27ZSyelle Graves

Greetings,

I am noticing something strange about the post order on this site https://8nsshl2021.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
The posts do not seem to show by the expected default order (reverse chronological.)

In addition, when I activate the simple Custom Post Order plugin in an attempt to get the posts to show in the order we want (happens to be alphabetical by title), that solution is also foiled.

I’ve included two screenshots (dashboard and front end).

When I first set these timestamps in order to show the posts alphabetically, the posts did show in the correct order. But since then, they have reverted to an order that looks random.

I attempted to re-create this on a test site, thinking that it might be related to the 2017 theme, but I got mixed results (the "Hello World" post showed at the top, when it should show last, even when I changed themes, which seemed odd, and the rest showed in normal order. Sorry I don't have more info there.)

Let me know if I can provide any additional info/apologies if this is something simple.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #11131 (Reporter Feedback): Image Annotation Pluginshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/111312019-02-20T17:23:54ZLaurie Hurson

Recently, a faculty member asked about installing the PRO version the plugin 'Draw Attention' (https://wordpress.org/plugins/draw-attention/) for image annotation for her art history class. The free version currently on the Commons only allows annotation on one image per site and she was hoping to use it for student assignments (30-60 images per site). The plugin does not have front-end annotation but rather requires the user to create the annotations through the dashboard area of the plugin. In the dashboard, users select the clickable areas for front-end users to explore. From what I can tell in the free version, like a post, a user chooses an image, adds content (annotations) and posts the image. Tested here: https://coursetest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/?da_image=123

The plugin is fairly easy to use through the dashboard interface but its unclear whether users can annotate images posted by others (but probably not, like posts)so its possible that this plugin does not allow for shared/collaborative annotation on a image.

Just FYI, the PRO version costs $74/year for one site and $124/year for unlimited sites, but I know the Commons tends to steer away from paid plugins. Moreover, dashboard editing and non-collaborative annotation may not be not ideal for a class setup. I think front-end annotation might work better since having users access the image through the back-end and set up annotations might be confusing for students and require admin user status as opposed to author status.

I'm not sure of other tools that do collaborative image annotation (other than VOCAT). One possibility is Demon Image Annotation but this plugin might work the same way as Draw Attention

I'd like to do a review over the next few releases of blacklisted plugins. These are plugins that are unavailable on Dashboard > Plugins, but may still be running on existing sites. For those that are running only on a small handful of sites, it may be worth removing the plugin from the codebase altogether. This data will take some time to collect.

We might want to investigate the Subscribe 2 plugin... these users -- https://jitp.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/admin.php?page=s2_tools -- don't look real.

Don't think it causes much harm, but we might look to see if this plugin is being utilized on the Commons and deprecate if not. Could be part of a larger effort to identify best methods for facilitating notification of new posts and push users towards that solution.
