Hi,

The Newletter plugin for the CPCP website (https://cpcp.commons.gc.cuny.edu) is again having issues. Newsletters are not sending out. You then have to go in and manually run the queue but this takes forever and stops on its own unless you go back and run again. Any idea what is happening? Is it related to the WP Cron? How can we fix it? Thanks,

Hi everyone,

Here's the issue that we've been discussing internally:

We need to find a way to announce and keep a record of data quality issues. We're currently using the IR Director Listserv for this but a few days after a data alert has been sent out, people forget about it. What we would love to do is to have some sort of prompt to send out an alert email when an update has been made to only a single page (in this case, https://oirap.commons.gc.cuny.edu/alerts-data-quality-issues/). The reason why I say a prompt is because we frequently make updates to pages before sharing them.

Thanks very much!!

Hi Ray --

Twice today, I've had a single RBE email rejected, saying it can't be posted. In each case, I've received 2-3 error messages, as if the message had been sent multiple times to the CAC. I'm not sure whether my gmail is trying to send multiple times (which seems unlikely, as I think it reached the system, even if only to result in an error message) or whether RBE is the issue.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #7828 (Assigned): Theme Assessment 2017https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/78282017-03-24T14:03:37ZMargaret Galvan

I am performing an assessment of the network enabled themes on the Commons, building off previous work by Laura Kane--who started a spreadsheet on this topic in 2014--and Kelly Josephs--who made edits/additions to this spreadsheet last year, which resulted in this thread and the acquisition of some new themes: https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/5838

In looking at the themes on the Commons, I am comparing them against network enabled theme lists for OpenLab, Blogs@Baruch, Macaulay ePortfolio, OpenCUNY, and NYU WP (https://wp.nyu.edu/). I asked for and received a list of themes active on OpenLab and Blogs@Baruch in late January, and I gathered the remaining information for the other three installations myself since I am an active participant on these systems. Later in the process, I'll be looking to the themes lists from these platforms for suggestions for new themes, but here's a quick bit of information right now. Macaulay ePortfolio has 211 network enabled themes (includes some child themes), Blogs@Baruch has 99, the Commons has 85, OpenCUNY has 59, NYU WP has 47, and OpenLab has 14.

In assessing our themes, I'm going to be paying close attention to when the themes were last updated on WP.org because out-of-date themes can stop working well and won't be taking into account recent trends in theme development towards responsiveness, multiple platforms, and accessibility. As I do this, I'll also be paying attention to accessibility and making sure we have or consider acquiring a healthy set of accessible themes. I will be digging into information and contacts that Luke provided when I near this step. At the end, I'm hoping to produce a white paper with suggestions that will be useful to the Commons, but which I hope to share with the other platforms as a way of saying thanks for sharing their information.

I will also be making documentation on the Help site for new users about how to choose a theme, likely once the theme assessment is farther along. I am considering drafting from this post that I wrote for OpenCUNY: http://opencuny.info/2015/08/27/how-to-choose-a-theme-5-tips/ I welcome comments and suggestions about how to adapt this information for the Commons, in addition to changing the names of the theme suggestions once the assessment nears completion.

At this stage, I am performing a sweep through our theme list. 60 of the 85 are not actively searchable through the WordPress.org theme interface https://wordpress.org/themes/. That means that either they were acquired outside of this repository or that they haven't been updated in 2 years and have been removed from being searchable. I'm working right now on determining what the situation is for each of these unsearchable themes, working in part from the spreadsheet mentioned at the beginning of this post alongside resources like this list of themes retired on WordPress.com (note sometimes these themes continue to be developed on WordPress.org, but often not): https://theme.wordpress.com/all-retired/

Some questions at this juncture:
1. What is the process for updating themes acquired outside of the WordPress.org framework? I'm thinking here of themes from places like Elegant Themes and Woo Themes.
2. Would there be a way to get dates for when these themes were last updated on our system? To my knowledge, this information doesn't exist within the WordPress interface--even at the network admin level--but it would be easy to acquire by, for example, looking at the dates that the folders of the theme files were last updated through an FTP interface.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #6644 (Reporter Feedback): White Screen at Login Pgehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/66442016-11-08T17:07:40ZLuke Waltzerlwaltzer@gc.cuny.edu

Hi Boone,

I'm trying to produce a grant report and get a sense of some CAC numbers. When I click on "Sites" in the nav bar, I see two different numbers 1575 in the "All Sites" tab and 2263 in the Viewing x of x info line.

Which is correct, and is this evidence of a bug of some kind? Or does it just reflect something like private/hidden sites that I can see as a super-admin?

Marking this as high priority only because I'm trying to get the report in and would appreciate a quick answer if at all possible.
CUNY Academic Commons - Publicity #5298 (New): Survey Pop-Up Texthttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/52982016-03-08T17:05:23ZSamantha Raddatz

I think the pop-up asking people to take the survey should be short and sweet. How about this?

As the Commons team grows, more people are faced with the task of creating a local enviroment that mirrors the Commons for their development work. This is currently not an easy task. At a high level, you have to:

- make sure that a *AMP environment is running on your computer, and is roughly compatible with the server software running on the Commons production server
- clone the Commons repo
- download and import some version of the Commons database into your own local database
- do a bunch of wizardry to ensure that either you can switch your local environment to self-identify as 'commons.gc.cuny.edu', or to swap out with a local dev URL like 'commons.local.dev' or 'local.cicdev.com'
- maybe get some representative piece of the data at wp-content/blogs.dir/

Each of these steps is fraught with issues about data integrity, implementation details, and various, unpleasant gotchas.

Let's start to work toward something a bit more organized. I'm going to suggest the following as a starting point:

- Let's use Vagrant for VM management, since it's pretty widely used in the WP community
- Pick a provisioning tool - bash, Puppet, Salt, Chef, etc - for doing environment provisioning. I don't have a ton of experience here, so if anyone has thoughts, please jump in
- Write the necessary provisioning scripts to mirror the Commons fairly well (keeping in mind that we don't control the Commons environment directly, and that the Commons runs RHEL, which means we'll need to use a pretty-close free alternative OS)
- Write some scripts to handle fetching recent versions of Commons data, including a "cleaned-up" version of production data (I'll open a separate ticket for this)

I think this would be a cool summer project. Dom, I'm going to assign to you for the moment, as it seems up your alley, and ask you to give your initial thoughts.
NYCDH Community Site - Feature #2574 (Assigned): Add Way to Upload Files to Groupshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/25742013-05-16T21:12:06ZMark Newtonmnewton@columbia.eduNYCDH Community Site - Feature #2573 (Reporter Feedback): Add dh_nyc twitter list feed to sitehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/25732013-05-16T21:11:46ZMark Newtonmnewton@columbia.eduNYCDH Community Site - Feature #2571 (Assigned): Add Google custom search box to homepagehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/25712013-05-16T21:10:13ZMark Newtonmnewton@columbia.eduCUNY Academic Commons - Feature #370 (Assigned): Guest Accountshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/3702010-10-08T15:15:19ZMatt Goldmattgold@gmail.com

We have just had an inquiry about bringing 15-20 non CUNY people on to the site for a conference. These kinds of decisions would be much easier to make if we had some sort of guest accounts, perhaps with limited permissions (the ability to participate in a specific blog, for instance, but not to create a new one or to edit wiki pages.)
