Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #17797 (New): Widgets in Pages for custom category listshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/177972023-03-08T18:34:10ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I am building out an OER TLC assignment library on the Commons. I will need to make the taxonomies and folksonomies visible to users so the site and assignments can be easily searched and navigated, kind of like it is here (bottom of page): http://teachoer.org/

On the TeachOER site, I used "widgets on pages" plugin that allows a user to group widget and use shortcode to insert. I like how the widget displays on the front end not just as a lit but as buttons. (I Think this may be the theme?)
https://datamad.co.uk/wordpress-plugins/widgets-on-pages/

My question: can we add widgets in pages plugin for use on this Commons site: https://tlcassignments.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

AND/OR can you advise: is there a better way to do this now with the block editor? I can imagine making buttons with custom links to each category archive but I think this would be tedious. Right now, I see that the "category block only lists categories, and does not display them in a pleasing way.

There is no rush on this, I don't need to complete the prototype library site until April.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #17770 (New): Adding Fontshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/177702023-03-06T15:52:33ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

The folks working on the Oral History archive I mentioned on Friday are asking about adding fonts to the commons. From the user team:

"Would it be possible to add these fonts to the Commons system for our Land Use Organizing Oral History website? One is free and one needs to be purchased. Can I pay for the font that needs to be purchased? I’ve cc’ed my collaborator, Selina Byeon, here who is working on building the site."

The two fonts are:

Flash D Light (for headers and large text)
https://www.youworkforthem.com/font/T1087/flash/buying/

League Spartan (for sub-headers and body text)
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/League+Spartan?query=league+sparta

Are wew able to add these fonts? What is process for adding a paid tool? Do they need to purchase first and then we add?

Thanks for you help.

Syelle Graves reports:

We have a hopefully-simple question about a Gravity form that uses the post creation option on this site https://weauthors.commons.gc.cuny.edu/category/spanish/

The problem is that even though we have the submitted image set to be the featured image of the post draft, the image never appears in the post itself: https://weauthors.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/admin.php?page=gf_edit_forms&id=1 (https://weauthors.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/admin.php?page=gf_edit_forms&id=1)

I have ignored this for some time, because on the BMCC OL, where I also work, we have observed this to be a bug in this same theme that we are using here on the Commons site (Customizr).

However, perhaps your team has a solve? Is there any way to get the image to show in the post tile without us adding it manually? We are doing a large-scale project of CUNY student writing, and it would be a huge benefit to our instructors who have to publish hundreds of student submissions by hand as they come in.

Many thanks!

Hi All,

The folks at the GC Writing Center are working on building out a series of writing/revision resources on their website here:

https://gcwritingcenter.commons.gc.cuny.edu/revision-strategies/

They are using the Bellows plugin to create the sidebar menu you see on the left of that page and other pages clicked on through the menu.

They were wondering if it would be possible to make some adjustments to how the plugin works. It would be ideal if the sidebar menu:

- highlights which page a user is on.
Meaning if you are on RS argument, the background color of the sidebar menu highlights this page.

- show the the path the user took to arrive at each page.
Meaning, at the top each page the breadcrumbs info shows the top level and lower level menu items that lead to that page. For example if I was on this page https://gcwritingcenter.commons.gc.cuny.edu/rs_ventilation/ the breadcrumbs at the top would be "Home > RS Style > rs_ventilation"

I am not sure what our policy is on editing plugins for single use cases but these changes to Bellows seemed simple enough and potentially useful for other users.
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #15176 (Reporter Feedback): Archiving Q Writing & Old Wordpress S...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/151762022-01-11T15:39:32ZLaurie Hurson

Hi Boone, Ray, All,

I am meeting with librarians and staff from Queens College later this week to talk about the use of Q-Writing and the Commons on their campus. I spoke with them last semester and they had asked about some form of migration or archiving of Q writing on the Commons.

Some background: Q Writing is a Wordpress multi-site platform that the Queens College Center for Teaching and Learning set up years ago. As far as I can tell, it is not as consistently used or maintained as the Commons or other campus-specific Wordpress platforms throughout CUNY. The Queens college folks have asked about the "possibility of incorporating QC’s current WordPress MU site into the Commons." Qwriting currently has 8,195 sites and 22,538 users.

I told them migrating or archiving Q writing in the Commons was probably not possible but when I spoke to Matt briefly about it, he mentioned I should ask about HTML flattening or other possibilities. The Queens college folks had thought about setting up a CBOX to replace Q writing but I told them, and they likely already knew, that setting CBOX presented that same maintenance and sustainability issues they were already experiencing.

Any insight about possibilities for archiving, flattening, etc would be appreciated. Even if we can only do some of the sites (or none), that would be helpful for me to know and share with them when we meet on Thursday.

Thanks!
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #14842 (Reporter Feedback): Question about widgets and block editorhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/148422021-10-06T14:27:02ZGina Cherry

Last week, I noticed that there was a new form entry for which I never received an email notification. This week, I tested it by submitted a "fake" form entry, and the notification worked. However, if I go to the entry page and send a notification from there, it doesn't work. I checked the gravity form logs, and it looks like the emails are being submitted to SMTP. But, the notifications work sometimes and don't work other times. This can be problematic since students don't typically tell me that they submit forms, they just submit them and await my response. I checked the gravity forms system status and found the following errors:

Greetings,

I am noticing something strange about the post order on this site https://8nsshl2021.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
The posts do not seem to show by the expected default order (reverse chronological.)

In addition, when I activate the simple Custom Post Order plugin in an attempt to get the posts to show in the order we want (happens to be alphabetical by title), that solution is also foiled.

I’ve included two screenshots (dashboard and front end).

When I first set these timestamps in order to show the posts alphabetically, the posts did show in the correct order. But since then, they have reverted to an order that looks random.

I attempted to re-create this on a test site, thinking that it might be related to the 2017 theme, but I got mixed results (the "Hello World" post showed at the top, when it should show last, even when I changed themes, which seemed odd, and the rest showed in normal order. Sorry I don't have more info there.)

Let me know if I can provide any additional info/apologies if this is something simple.
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #14538 (Reporter Feedback): Weebly To Commonshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/145382021-06-08T16:25:06ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I met with a faculty member who runs the Lehman Lab for Social Analysis: https://www.lehmanlab.org/

She would like to move the Lehman Lab site onto Commons along with several of the websites for the courses the lab offers, linked below

https://www.lehman-guns-research.org/

https://nycethnography.weebly.com/

https://foodhealthmigrationlehman.weebly.com/

These 4 sites are on Weebly currently but she would like to move them over to the Commons so they can be further built out and used each semester, in tandem with the courses that will now also run on the Commons.

I have looked online for various methods of exporting Weebly to Wordpress but the exporter that is out there (https://weeblytowp.com/) does work in this case because the site are all pages, not blogs.

There seems to be another method for moving to WordPress that involves exporting an HTML archive of the site and then uploading HTML archive to Wordpress. However, I do not believe we have a way to upload HTML archives to the Commons (I think this is a security issue).

Moving these sites to the Commons will be a one time thing since, once they are on the Commons she will continue building out the sites in the CAC space.

Any suggestions for how we might export/import these Weebly sites onto Commmons (preferably avoiding a manual copy/paste method, if possible)?
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #12436 (Assigned): Nightly system downtimehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/124362020-02-18T16:21:55ZBoone Gorgesboone@gorg.es

I'm opening this ticket to track recent outages on the Commons. A number of us receive automated notices when the database server is forced to reboot. Beginning roughly one month ago, we started getting these notices several times per week. These notifications indicate when the DB server is forced to reboot, so they indicate at best the end of a problematic period. I receive additional notifications when requests begin to take an inordinately long time, which serves as an indicator of when the incidents begin.

I've been keeping track of specifics over the last few weeks, and I've discerned the following patterns:

- The most common downtime is just after 05:00 UTC (midnight EST, UTC-5), with my incident reports rolling in sometimes around 12:03am and sometimes around 12:07am.
- Occasionally, the incidents have begun an hour or two earlier, shortly after 03:00 or 04:00 UTC.
- Incidents seem always to begin several minutes after the hour
- Reboots usually take place between 3 and 6 minutes after the beginning of the incident
- On some occasions, the reboots don't seem to fix the underlying issue, and another cycle of slow requests + db reboots immediately follows.
- Sometimes this'll happen a few nights in a row, while sometimes the site will go a few days without any notifications.

All of this strongly suggests that the problem is with an automated cron task, specifically one that takes place around midnight. I've begun to do an analysis of the tasks scheduled for around this time, cross-referencing with the logs. Ideally, we'd be able to narrow down the culprit by identifying the last cron task that begins just before the outages. This is not possible, for a couple reasons: First, the performance issues may only kick in a minute or two after the task begins running (as the system's resources are gradually used up). Second, the Cavalcade logs don't natively keep track of when a task begins running, but only when it finishes (see https://github.com/humanmade/Cavalcade-Runner/blob/master/inc/class-runner.php#L377).

So the best we can do is to make some educated guesses. I'll follow up in a comment with initial thoughts.
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #12328 (New): Sign up Code for Non-CUNY Facultyhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/123282020-01-27T16:23:58ZLaurie Hurson

The free version currently on the Commons only allows annotation on one image per site and she was hoping to use it for student assignments (30-60 images per site). The plugin does not have front-end annotation but rather requires the user to create the annotations through the dashboard area of the plugin. In the dashboard, users select the clickable areas for front-end users to explore. From what I can tell in the free version, like a post, a user chooses an image, adds content (annotations) and posts the image. Tested here: https://coursetest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/?da_image=123

The plugin is fairly easy to use through the dashboard interface but its unclear whether users can annotate images posted by others (but probably not, like posts)so its possible that this plugin does not allow for shared/collaborative annotation on a image.

Just FYI, the PRO version costs $74/year for one site and $124/year for unlimited sites, but I know the Commons tends to steer away from paid plugins. Moreover, dashboard editing and non-collaborative annotation may not be not ideal for a class setup. I think front-end annotation might work better since having users access the image through the back-end and set up annotations might be confusing for students and require admin user status as opposed to author status.

I'm not sure of other tools that do collaborative image annotation (other than VOCAT). One possibility is Demon Image Annotation but this plugin might work the same way as Draw Attention
