CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #18016 (Hold): ml-slider get_plugins() call causes performance issues

See discussion at https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/15767#note-2 and follow-up. The ml-slider folks have promised to fix the issue, but have not done so. https://wordpress.org/support/topic/call-to-get_plugins-causing-performance-problems/

Until they do, we will need to patch ml-slider each time it's updated. This happens next in the 2.1.5 release.

We should also have some sort of system for notifying the release manager (ie me) whenever this patch needs to be applied. Looking at GitHub Actions results is already part of my workflow, which helps me catch invalid syntax and other items. But this one is kinda hard to catch with static analysis tools. Instead, I'm thinking I'll add something to the wp-cli-cac script that I use for bulk plugin updates, something that throws a huge notice about plugins that need manual attention after they've received an update.

CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #16092 (Hold): Don't show main site in Site search results

- The CAC home site seems to appear in search results. Can we filter that out?

I don't know whether this is something we actually want to do. If there's general agreement, please let me know and I'll look into technical feasibility.

CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #11945 (Reporter Feedback): Add Comments bubble to Reckoning views

The comment bubble links to a dashboard page with all the comments on a particular post (screenshot). I was suggesting integrating this comment bubble into reckoning for each post. So along with the post name, post category (to be added), dated posted, and grade (to be integrated), you could also see the dynamic comment bubble and when clicked, be taken to the dashboard page of comments on post (screenshot).

If the comment bubble is integrated into reckoning, when viewing reckoning with post information, a prof could easily navigate to view all the comments on a particular post, including their own, which maybe be associated with the grade that is visible in reckoning.

CUNY Academic Commons - Support #11883 (New): Need Embedding Help Page Update (Tableau)

Hi Scott,

So I was recently trying to embed a Tableau visualization into a Commons site when I ran into a couple of roadblocks. I went to our Help Page for embedding from other websites, and it was helpful, but something we may want to add is that when copying the share link over from Tableau, you have to make sure you copy the link under "Original View"

It was only after that discovery that the visualization was fully functioning within the Commons. I attached (or tried to attach) a screenshot to hopefully show you what I'm talking about.

Thanks!

CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #10380 (In Progress): Remove blacklisted plugins
https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/10380

I'd like to do a review over the next few releases of blacklisted plugins. These are plugins that are unavailable on Dashboard > Plugins, but may still be running on existing sites. For those that are running only on a small handful of sites, it may be worth removing the plugin from the codebase altogether. This data will take some time to collect.

Scott, I'm copying you in case I have questions on any of them.

CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #4388 (Assigned): Repeated request for authentication.
https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/4388

Hi, I'm building a site on the Commons, and when I click on a page or refresh one, a pop-up asking for authentication interrupts the work, often making me click OK up to 8-10 times. (It doesn't go away if I click Cancel, either). I can't tell whether this is Commons-wide or related to my account or theme, although it did not happen when I used a different Commons site yesterday

My site is not public yet, but the URL is amcmichael.commons.gc.cuny.edu and the theme is Make. I've had this problem repeatedly over the last couple of weeks. (See the attached screenshot for the pop-up box that I get).

Thank you.
Best,
Alice Lynn

CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #3002 (Assigned): Overhaul CAC search by using external search ap...

We currently use a Google Custom Search Engine for our primary search. This is bad in a number of ways:

1. It's Google
2. It's not faceted in ways that make sense for the Commons (ie, you can't distinguish between relevant content types, like Forum Posts vs Blog Posts)
3. It doesn't index private/hidden content

By using an external search appliance, like Sphinx or Elasticsearch, we can greatly enhance our search experience. In addition to improved discoverability of our content, we could leverage a search appliance in the future for topic modeling, data mining, recommendation engines, etc.

Requirements:
a. Should have a robust API, ideally with a PHP or even a WordPress integration already in the wild for us to start with
b. The search appliance itself should be fairly easy to get up and running, because it's likely that we'll have to do it ourselves given our lack of André
c. We should be able to index content in such a way that it respects differences in content type (groups, group forum posts, blog comments, wiki pages, etc etc etc)
d. We should be able to filter results based on privacy/visibility settings (this could happen either in the index or on the WordPress end)

I'm leaning toward Elasticsearch, as I think it meets all these criteria, and it just generally seems neat.

My plan of attack is to set up a test instance somewhere, and then take the existing WP integration plugin http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-elasticsearch/ and start to build it out to handle BuddyPress and WP Multisite more elegantly. I'll spend a few hours exploring to get a sense of just how big a job it'll be, and then we can think about milestones.

CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #1508 (Assigned): Share login cookies across mapped domains
https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/1508

boone@gorg.es

With #1501, we've started doing some custom domain mapping on the Commons. Because browsers authenticate cookies on a domain-by-domain basis, this means that your Commons login session does not persist when visiting the mapped domains. It'd be very nice if this didn't happen. Since we're operating from a whitelist of mapped domains, it shouldn't be too hard to share these cookies. A quick search shows http://ikailo.com/218/cross-domain-cookie-sharing-wordpress/
