Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Support #19605 (New): AI question from Ned Bentonhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196052024-01-26T17:19:25ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

Ned Benton asks:

nbenton@jjay.cuny.edu | January 26, 2024 9:20 am
Will CUNY Commons install any plug-ins that connect to AI services. I am thinking of this one but there may be others.

https://wordpress.com/plugins/ai-engine

I have posted in NESRI an article about AI and slavery records. Here it is.

https://nesri.commons.gc.cuny.edu/artificial-intelligence-and-slavery-research/

While this article reveals risks and deficiencies, I continue to think that AI could become a useful way to explain records of slavery at the individual level. We are working on a project we call NESRI 2.0 which involves adding several more fields to will enrich the interconnections between the 90,000 records that we have.

If we eventually do this system-wide, we have the challenge of presenting this to users. I first approach is to add a table to our locality reports that lists the families, in the locality specified for the report, with a link to click into the records of any family, so people in Boston can learn of families of enslaved people in the 1700s. But I also think that I can code the database to construct a test string that can be submitted as a prompt to an AI service to get back an essay about the family - the names and relationships and events in their lives and in the community when they lived. The service would have to have guardrails to not make up information.

Hi All,

I followed up with Zach after our community call today to clarify how he would like to contribute to the model CV we will use for Commons outreach for the next release.

Rather than using his own personal and public CV, Zach is available to help build out a model graduate student CV for us to use in outreach about the new CV features.

To get this going, a few questions:
- should zach spin up a new account to go with this CV?
-- If yes, should the new account and model CV be done on the dev site and then moved over to production?
- If we are using this model CV for outreach (and possibly documentation? not sure) what is the timeline on when this needs to be up and running?

I'm sure there are other considerations or questions I am missing so please feel free to let us know what we need to do!
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #18982 (Reporter Feedback): Sites missing pages, menus, icons, ba...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/189822023-10-05T23:52:11ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

In light of recent issues with our server, we'd like to have a more concrete plan in place should the Commons experience significant downtime. Let's gather ideas, next steps, and preparatory materials here.

As a starting point, during the last few meetings we discussed establishing a Commons archive or backup. We need to hash out what that would mean:

- What content would we save and what wouldn't we?
- Would we save full site/group configurations (members, preferences, etc) prioritize Library and Media uploads, etc?
- Where would this archive live, and how would it be updated/tested/maintained?
- What would be the plan for using this in the event of an outage?
- Could we maintain an external list of site/group admin emails for emergency outreach?
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #18739 (New): PDF Embedder Premiumhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/187392023-09-05T17:39:09ZSyelle Graves

We have a quick question about the PDF embedder: Has the Commons team ever considered the paid version? We ask because we have a newsletter with hyperlinks that we can't embed. and it would be great to have that functionality, which I believe the paid plugin has.

The only alternative I know of is to use an embedded Google doc, but we don't do that because we would have to reformat all of our existing PDFs, which we’ve tried and found not worth it (tables and images take forever to convert from Word to gdocs). Anyway, we're just curious in general if the Commons has considered or would consider it, if it's not too expensive!

Hope it's okay to ask. Thank you!
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #18412 (Reporter Feedback): New themes for template sites & templ...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/184122023-06-26T19:17:21ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I looked through some themes today to see what options we have for updating the template sites. Below I have provided some info about where I landed on new themes for the templates. If you want to live preview the new suggestions on the template sites, just let me know and I can add you as an admin.

Teaching Template: https://teaching-template.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
Current: Twenty Twelve
New: Tempo

This is likely the most important choice because I think this is the most used template.

Academic Portfolio Template: https://academic-portfolio-template.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
Current: Academica
New: Puskar

I would also suggest we change the site name and name in the site creation process to "Faculty & instructor portfolio template" to discourage student use of the template. We have many students building portfolios now and "academic" is too broad.

Conference Template: https://conftemplate.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
Current Sydney
New: sydney
I would suggest we leave the theme the same because Sydney has changed recently and there are many new options that make it a great theme.

I can make all these changes because I am an admin on the template sites (except name change during site creation) Let me know what you all think and we can discuss before I change anything.

I am also wondering if we can get a report on number of sites that have used each template to determine how often these templates are being chosed during creation.
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #18019 (New): Newsletter, anewhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/180192023-04-13T00:42:42ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

Following up on a recent dev call, here's a list of unique notification types on the Commons:

added_reader
bbp_new_reply
comment_mention
followedpaper_comment
followedpaper_edit
friendship_accepted
friendship_request
group_invite
membership_request_accepted
membership_request_rejected
member_promoted_to_admin
member_promoted_to_mod
mypaper_comment
new_at_mention
new_membership_request
new_message
new_wire_post
pending_booking

We can eliminate several that are related to Social Paper:
added_reader
,
comment_mention
,
followedpaper_comment
,
followedpaper_edit
,
mypaper_comment
. In addition,
new_wire_post
is linked to a feature that we no longer have on the Commons. This leaves us with:

1. bbp_new_reply - Created by bbPress for user A when user B posts a reply to a forum topic or reply written by A.
2. friendship_accepted - Created by BP for user A when user B accepts a friendship request that A sent to B.
3. friendship_request - Created by BP for user A when user B sends a friendship request to A.
4. group_invite - Created by BP for user A when user B invites A to join a group.
5. membership_request_accepted - Created by BP for user A when A requests membership in a group, and the group's admin approves the request
6. membership_request_rejected - Created by BP for user A when A requests membership in a group, and the group's admin rejects the request
7. member_promoted_to_admin - Created by BP for user A when A is promoted in a group from 'member' to 'admin'
8. member_promoted_to_mod - Created by BP for user A when A is promoted in a group from 'member' to 'mod'
9. new_at_mention - Created by BP for user A when A is at-mentioned anywhere tracked by BuddyPress. Notably for our purpose, this includes blog posts, blog comments, forum posts.
10. new_membership_request - Created by BP for user A when A is the admin of a private group, and user B requests membership in that group
11. new_message - Created by BP for user A when A receives a private message
12. pending_booking - Created by the events-manager plugin for user A when user A has created an event with booking, and user B books for that event. events-manager is not a plugin that we run on the main site, so this must be something that happens on secondary sites

Of these, a number are purely informational. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 A right-hand notifications pane could have a message that summarizes the information ("So-and-so replied to your forum post") and then links to that content.

Several of them have obvious follow-up actions. 3, 4, 10, perhaps 11. A right-hand notifications pane could have a link that points you to the page where you'd perform the action, or perhaps it could show you the interface for actually performing the action (ie, accepting the friendship).

I hope this is a helpful start.
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #17621 (Reporter Feedback): increase Maximum file sizehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/176212023-02-04T21:18:51ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

Thank You
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #16795 (New): Updating default themes on new sites and templateshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/167952022-09-14T15:22:02ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

On several of the dev/community calls we have discussed updating the default theme on new sites and the templates offered during the creation flow.

Current template sites are below. For Academic, Conference, and Teaching sites, I believe these sites (below) are cloned when a user chooses one of these templates. Is that correct? If so, if I change the theme here, will this update the default theme for any new sites that select the template?

Any new site default theme is Twenty Twenty https://wordpress.org/themes/twentytwenty/

Academic Template: https://academic-portfolio-template.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Conference Template: https://conftemplate.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Teaching Template: https://teaching-template.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Looking at the templates again, I don't know if we actually need to update the themes for the Academic or Conference templates. Thoughts?

I think new sites and teaching templates would benefit from a new default themes.

Perhaps we make the new default Twenty Twenty Two to be consistent with Wordpress? 2022 theme is more appealing than 2020. https://wordpress.org/themes/twentytwentytwo/

For the teaching template - Colin - are there any themes that have been really popular for BK faculty teaching courses? In my experience a lot of people like the Radiate theme, but we may want something new since a lot of other sites are already using this theme. I will also start a new ticket with suggestions for a few new themes to add to the network.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #15923 (Reporter Feedback): Bellows Plugin Adjustmentshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/159232022-04-18T16:41:35ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

The folks at the GC Writing Center are working on building out a series of writing/revision resources on their website here:

https://gcwritingcenter.commons.gc.cuny.edu/revision-strategies/

They are using the Bellows plugin to create the sidebar menu you see on the left of that page and other pages clicked on through the menu.

They were wondering if it would be possible to make some adjustments to how the plugin works. It would be ideal if the sidebar menu:

- highlights which page a user is on.
Meaning if you are on RS argument, the background color of the sidebar menu highlights this page.

- show the the path the user took to arrive at each page.
Meaning, at the top each page the breadcrumbs info shows the top level and lower level menu items that lead to that page. For example if I was on this page https://gcwritingcenter.commons.gc.cuny.edu/rs_ventilation/ the breadcrumbs at the top would be "Home > RS Style > rs_ventilation"

I am not sure what our policy is on editing plugins for single use cases but these changes to Bellows seemed simple enough and potentially useful for other users.
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #15176 (Reporter Feedback): Archiving Q Writing & Old Wordpress S...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/151762022-01-11T15:39:32ZLaurie Hurson

Hi Boone, Ray, All,

I am meeting with librarians and staff from Queens College later this week to talk about the use of Q-Writing and the Commons on their campus. I spoke with them last semester and they had asked about some form of migration or archiving of Q writing on the Commons.

Some background: Q Writing is a Wordpress multi-site platform that the Queens College Center for Teaching and Learning set up years ago. As far as I can tell, it is not as consistently used or maintained as the Commons or other campus-specific Wordpress platforms throughout CUNY. The Queens college folks have asked about the "possibility of incorporating QC’s current WordPress MU site into the Commons." Qwriting currently has 8,195 sites and 22,538 users.

I told them migrating or archiving Q writing in the Commons was probably not possible but when I spoke to Matt briefly about it, he mentioned I should ask about HTML flattening or other possibilities. The Queens college folks had thought about setting up a CBOX to replace Q writing but I told them, and they likely already knew, that setting CBOX presented that same maintenance and sustainability issues they were already experiencing.

Any insight about possibilities for archiving, flattening, etc would be appreciated. Even if we can only do some of the sites (or none), that would be helpful for me to know and share with them when we meet on Thursday.

Thanks!
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #14842 (Reporter Feedback): Question about widgets and block editorhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/148422021-10-06T14:27:02ZGina Cherry

Greetings,

I am noticing something strange about the post order on this site https://8nsshl2021.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
The posts do not seem to show by the expected default order (reverse chronological.)

In addition, when I activate the simple Custom Post Order plugin in an attempt to get the posts to show in the order we want (happens to be alphabetical by title), that solution is also foiled.

I’ve included two screenshots (dashboard and front end).

When I first set these timestamps in order to show the posts alphabetically, the posts did show in the correct order. But since then, they have reverted to an order that looks random.

I attempted to re-create this on a test site, thinking that it might be related to the 2017 theme, but I got mixed results (the "Hello World" post showed at the top, when it should show last, even when I changed themes, which seemed odd, and the rest showed in normal order. Sorry I don't have more info there.)

Let me know if I can provide any additional info/apologies if this is something simple.
