Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Support #19605 (New): AI question from Ned Bentonhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196052024-01-26T17:19:25ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

Ned Benton asks:

nbenton@jjay.cuny.edu | January 26, 2024 9:20 am
Will CUNY Commons install any plug-ins that connect to AI services. I am thinking of this one but there may be others.

https://wordpress.com/plugins/ai-engine

I have posted in NESRI an article about AI and slavery records. Here it is.

https://nesri.commons.gc.cuny.edu/artificial-intelligence-and-slavery-research/

While this article reveals risks and deficiencies, I continue to think that AI could become a useful way to explain records of slavery at the individual level. We are working on a project we call NESRI 2.0 which involves adding several more fields to will enrich the interconnections between the 90,000 records that we have.

If we eventually do this system-wide, we have the challenge of presenting this to users. I first approach is to add a table to our locality reports that lists the families, in the locality specified for the report, with a link to click into the records of any family, so people in Boston can learn of families of enslaved people in the 1700s. But I also think that I can code the database to construct a test string that can be submitted as a prompt to an AI service to get back an essay about the family - the names and relationships and events in their lives and in the community when they lived. The service would have to have guardrails to not make up information.

Hi Scott -- thanks so much for all of the work you did to help us transition to a new help system. I know I'm being super picky here, but how big of a deal would it be for us to create a new gmail address that is commonshelp@gmail.com as opposed to commonshelpsite@gmail.com?
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #18023 (New): Access Isssueshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/180232023-04-13T15:05:34ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

We are getting a few messages on zendesk about the Commons being down. I am not seeing any issues site wide however one message was about the Segal center website:

https://thesegalcenter.org/

I am getting the "The CUNY Academic Commons is experiencing technical problems. For more details, visit the Commons status blog"
when I visit this mapped domain.

Can you provide insight and/or help resolve this?

Hi All,

The folks working on the Oral History archive I mentioned on Friday are asking about adding fonts to the commons. From the user team:

"Would it be possible to add these fonts to the Commons system for our Land Use Organizing Oral History website? One is free and one needs to be purchased. Can I pay for the font that needs to be purchased? I’ve cc’ed my collaborator, Selina Byeon, here who is working on building the site."

The two fonts are:

Flash D Light (for headers and large text)
https://www.youworkforthem.com/font/T1087/flash/buying/

Are wew able to add these fonts? What is process for adding a paid tool? Do they need to purchase first and then we add?

Thanks for you help.

I have retested following the release and there are still some issues:

the footer is does not display correctly

"Create A New Doc" goes to create a new group/site/group+site (Special Pages)

Site Home goes to CAC Homepage (Special Pages)

Recently Active button shows all Commons members who are recently active

Who is Online shows all Commons members who are online

If you change the theme to a non commentpress theme, and try to change back, you can only change to Comment Default theme, not the Modern theme (you have to deactivate plugin and reactivate to get to the Modern theme again)

Most of these are not terribly serious, and the plugin still works, but it would be nice to get them fixed in the future, when there is time.
NYCDH Community Site - Feature #10628 (New): Data Science - Flier and Cardshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/106282018-10-29T18:07:24ZAlex IrklievskiAIrklievski@gc.cuny.eduNYCDH Community Site - Feature #10627 (New): Compu Linguistics - Flyer and Cardshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/106272018-10-29T18:01:39ZAlex IrklievskiAIrklievski@gc.cuny.eduCUNY Academic Commons - Bug #6755 (New): Cannot Deactivate Plugin https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/67552016-11-16T04:50:47ZLaura Kanelaura.w.kane@gmail.com

I've tried several times to remove the "Sociable" plugin from the JITP Staging Site (http://jitpstaging.commons.gc.cuny.edu) but the plugin will not deactivate.
Hi All,

I've had a few people contact me to ask about where they might post announcements. I know we've talked about something like this in the past, but here are a few ideas:

1. A general area where people could post announcements. We could have a checkbox on sign up that asks people whether they want to subscribe by email
2. A craigslist type bulletin board -- perhaps done through a group, but is access more through the forum interface than through a group interface
3. A general group for announcements.

What do you all think? I think that, generally, it should be an easy to use space that allows opt-in subscriptions.
