Hi All,

A user posted a message in a public group forum at 1:31pm:

https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/cuny-manifold-users/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-2/

It was cross-posted on several other groups, which posted at 2:03. Examples are below, both groups are also public

COIL:
https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/collaborative-online-international-learning-coil/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-3/

TLC: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/teaching-and-learning-center/forum/topic/upcoming-manifold-workshops-6/

I received an email from the COIL forum at 2:37, see screenshot.

Two questions:

1. Robin (user) was wondering: Is this lag time between original posting, cross posting, and email typical and correct functionality? I thought maybe yes, since all messages have to be pulled through to each location, but wanted to be sure to ask.

2. Why wasn't the email I received from the CUNY Manifold Group, where the forum post was originated?

I received the email of the group forum post from the COIL group. This seems strange since both groups are public. I would think that a user would want the email to come from the forum where the post was originally shared.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #19904 (New): New member welcome screenhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199042024-03-05T22:04:29ZColin McDonald

How can we go about editing the screen to which new members are redirected after registering? I think it looks something like the attached but haven't been able to get there myself recently. I wanted to explore making some changes to align with some of our work updating the invite modal in #19733.
Hi Scott and All,

I wanted to provide some feedback on our shiny and new help redesign. Overall it looks great! The main issue I am experiencing is the font size is so large, I really feel the site looks cramped and I can only find a little bit of information at one time.

In the screenshot attached, the header is taking up ~1/3 of the page, the title and first sentence is another 1/3 of the page, and I can only see 1-2 menu items in the left sidebar, whereas in the past design I could see about 10+ menu items so it was clear that the menu on the left was the "main nav" for each help section.

Could we consider changing the font size and spacing to make it so help site visitors can see more information on the page? Do others feel this would be helpful?
CUNY Academic Commons - Design/UX #19814 (New): BBPress Forum convert to blocks?https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/198142024-02-22T23:58:41ZSara Cannon

I was looking into BBPress installs and the one on WordPress.org support forums uses blocks instead of the classic editor for posting. Would this be possible with our installation or would this be a heavy lift?

My name is Malkah, and I work at the CUNY Graduate Center's Writing Center. On our CUNY Commons website, we have linked our Twitter/X account so that our Twitter/X feed appears on the right-hand side of our landing page.

I am using Chrome, and although I can see the Twitter/X feed on my computer, my colleague who is also using Chrome, cannot see the Twitter/X feed on his computer. The same goes for another colleague who uses Firefox, and the same goes for my phone, which uses Safari.

Would you please let us know how to fix this issue so that everyone can see the Twitter/X feed when they visit our website?

Thank you.

Hi All,

I was exploring text to audio tools the other day and found that both Firefox and Chrome have browser add-ons called "Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader" that add text to audio features on websites. Once installed in the browser, the tool converts the Commons page to audio, and allows users to navigate websites with support from audio navigation.

We might add a note about this on the accessibility page, and I can add it to the help documentation for teaching.

Using the tools also reveals that some of the home pages sections are skipped during audio, which makes me wonder if they are also missing or skipped if someone is using a screen reader. Maybe something to investigate when we have a chance.

Hi All,

I replied to this ticket below (Ticket 4583) through WS desk on Friday afternoon. Now when I go to find the ticket in WS desk it is nowhere to be found. See screenshots.

This has happened several times that I cannot find the tickets I was working on and therefore I cannot check if they have been replied to. Am I doing something wrong? Is this a bug or are the tickets archived somewhere that I cannot access?
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #19605 (New): AI question from Ned Bentonhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/196052024-01-26T17:19:25ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

Ned Benton asks:

nbenton@jjay.cuny.edu | January 26, 2024 9:20 am
Will CUNY Commons install any plug-ins that connect to AI services. I am thinking of this one but there may be others.

https://wordpress.com/plugins/ai-engine

I have posted in NESRI an article about AI and slavery records. Here it is.

https://nesri.commons.gc.cuny.edu/artificial-intelligence-and-slavery-research/

While this article reveals risks and deficiencies, I continue to think that AI could become a useful way to explain records of slavery at the individual level. We are working on a project we call NESRI 2.0 which involves adding several more fields to will enrich the interconnections between the 90,000 records that we have.

If we eventually do this system-wide, we have the challenge of presenting this to users. I first approach is to add a table to our locality reports that lists the families, in the locality specified for the report, with a link to click into the records of any family, so people in Boston can learn of families of enslaved people in the 1700s. But I also think that I can code the database to construct a test string that can be submitted as a prompt to an AI service to get back an essay about the family - the names and relationships and events in their lives and in the community when they lived. The service would have to have guardrails to not make up information.

Hi All,

I followed up with Zach after our community call today to clarify how he would like to contribute to the model CV we will use for Commons outreach for the next release.

Rather than using his own personal and public CV, Zach is available to help build out a model graduate student CV for us to use in outreach about the new CV features.

To get this going, a few questions:
- should zach spin up a new account to go with this CV?
-- If yes, should the new account and model CV be done on the dev site and then moved over to production?
- If we are using this model CV for outreach (and possibly documentation? not sure) what is the timeline on when this needs to be up and running?

I'm sure there are other considerations or questions I am missing so please feel free to let us know what we need to do!
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #18841 (New): Downtime planninghttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/188412023-09-14T23:27:45ZColin McDonald

In light of recent issues with our server, we'd like to have a more concrete plan in place should the Commons experience significant downtime. Let's gather ideas, next steps, and preparatory materials here.

As a starting point, during the last few meetings we discussed establishing a Commons archive or backup. We need to hash out what that would mean:

- What content would we save and what wouldn't we?
- Would we save full site/group configurations (members, preferences, etc) prioritize Library and Media uploads, etc?
- Where would this archive live, and how would it be updated/tested/maintained?
- What would be the plan for using this in the event of an outage?
- Could we maintain an external list of site/group admin emails for emergency outreach?
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #18213 (New): Google Analytics 4 migration documentation for usershttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/182132023-05-12T15:40:30ZBoone Gorgesboone@gorg.es

Individual sites on the Commons can have their own Google Analytics tracking. See #10722. Since #13511, we have supported Google Analytics 4 in addition to the legacy Universal Analytics. In Summer 2023, Google will be phasing out UA, so we should make some changes on the Commons:

1. Amend our help documentation to indicate that GA4 is the proper system to use, and to guide people on how to migrate their legacy UA accounts to GA4. Those users will then need to be directed on how to enter their new GA4 identifier in place of the old UA- identifier on their Commons sites.
2. We should change the language on the Commons dashboard panel so that it no longer indicates that both UA and GA4 are supported.
3. Scott, if you think it makes sense, we could build a system to build a list of sites using the old UA IDs. We can then either (a) email them, or (b) have something in the Commons (like an admin notice?) telling them to make the necessary changes, or (c) something else or some combination of these.

Scott, what do you think?
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #17102 (New): Universal footer revisions for ToS / CChttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/171022022-10-25T16:06:51ZColin McDonald

As part of our Creative Commons licensing and display overhaul, we want to edit the universal footer that appears across all Commons pages (see attached for its current state).

The main issue is the four links that appear under the nav items: Help, Privacy, Terms of Service, Creative Commons (CC) license unless otherwise noted.

(Incidentally, we have another project we should resolve here to update the text at some of these links: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/cac-community-team-project-planning/forum/topic/summer-project-review-of-commons-tos-privacy-policy-and-mission-statement-2/)

I'm proposing we change the fourth link to say Creative Commons License Info, and then instead of linking to this general CC license page that we do now:

https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/

Instead we link to a new page of documentation that explains a few of the CC points we've made in recent meetings:

- CC-licensed content on the Commons is also subject to our ToS, which allows us to truncate, show excerpts, repurpose, etc as per the needs of our design and the Commons overall
- The overall Commons content philosophy and distinction: You own your content on the Commons, different than on almost any other platform or social network. Explain what this means, how you can protect/export/etc.
- You can change the CC license of your Commons content at any time, on a space-by-space level.
- You can also choose no CC license at all, later or during space setup, and retain all rights with the exception of the ToS allowances mentioned above.
- A section on CC licensing and OER, which would be related to #17101

This version of the universal footer would only show up on our "core" Commons pages, like the homepage and directories -- we will need to spell out what this core contains.

A separate version would appear for this footer on individual Commons site and group pages, which will have their own licensing decisions and display. This version could just omit the fourth link to CC information, to reduce possible confusion there.
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #17101 (New): OER tag and CC licensing notification systemhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/171012022-10-25T16:04:02ZColin McDonald

We discussed in our last monthly meeting an idea to better link the OER tag during course site creation (or later editing such a site) with our Creative Commons licensing options.

It was proposed that if a user selects the OER tag, there would be an inline message if they have no CC license selected (either during the creation flow or on the site in Settings if the tag is being added later).

The message would say something like:

"We noticed that you have tagged your site as an OER but no CC license is present. Please CC license the open content, or the whole site in Settings>Writing. To learn more about open licensing visit our documentation [link TBD]."

Let's talk more about the mechanics of this, but I wanted to get the general idea down here.
