Redmine CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #19966 (Reporter Feedback): Slow Load Time on Sitehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/199662024-03-13T14:43:08ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

A user is developing a robust program website for a GC department. Right now it is on a dev domain and he plans to clone the site into the final domain soon. But first he is hoping to resolve the slow load times he is noticing on the site:

https://lmistest.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

-
From the User:

I am just getting really slow load times, and a lot of times, images don’t load. I was worried that I had clogged the site with too many images or something...

I have a lot of images currently uploaded to the site, especially a few big splash images, which I will ultimately delete, as I was just using these for drafts. However, we will be writing about 40 descriptions of projects we have worked on, and each one will have at least one (smaller) image, so I worry about the site slowing down even more?

I also worry it has to do with how many changes I made to the underlying theme (I’m currently using “Raft”)? I would really like to switch the theme to just a Wordpress Twenty Twenty-Four theme, but I spent a lot of time tweaking margins and padding etc. to make things look how I wanted them, so I don’t want to start from scratch… That said, if it’s an issue with the images, maybe the theme doesn’t have much to do with it?

-

I ran the site through a free (questionably accurate) load time checker and it did report the site was very slow. Can you all confirm slow load time and help diagnose what might be causing this?

My name is Malkah, and I work at the CUNY Graduate Center's Writing Center. On our CUNY Commons website, we have linked our Twitter/X account so that our Twitter/X feed appears on the right-hand side of our landing page.

I am using Chrome, and although I can see the Twitter/X feed on my computer, my colleague who is also using Chrome, cannot see the Twitter/X feed on his computer. The same goes for another colleague who uses Firefox, and the same goes for my phone, which uses Safari.

Would you please let us know how to fix this issue so that everyone can see the Twitter/X feed when they visit our website?

Thank you.

Hi All,

I was exploring text to audio tools the other day and found that both Firefox and Chrome have browser add-ons called "Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader" that add text to audio features on websites. Once installed in the browser, the tool converts the Commons page to audio, and allows users to navigate websites with support from audio navigation.

We might add a note about this on the accessibility page, and I can add it to the help documentation for teaching.

Using the tools also reveals that some of the home pages sections are skipped during audio, which makes me wonder if they are also missing or skipped if someone is using a screen reader. Maybe something to investigate when we have a chance.

Hi All,

I replied to this ticket below (Ticket 4583) through WS desk on Friday afternoon. Now when I go to find the ticket in WS desk it is nowhere to be found. See screenshots.

This has happened several times that I cannot find the tickets I was working on and therefore I cannot check if they have been replied to. Am I doing something wrong? Is this a bug or are the tickets archived somewhere that I cannot access?
CUNY Academic Commons - Support #19591 (Reporter Feedback): sidebar problem for course sitehttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/195912024-01-24T18:38:31ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

From a WS ticket:

I am currently facing an issue while attempting to edit the sidebar to display the course information on my page: https://kcccebioblitz.commons.gc.cuny.edu/. Despite my efforts to modify the content, the sidebar editing option seems to be inaccessible, and I can’t update the preset from my Dashboard.
To provide further context, I have attached an image illustrating the specific area of concern. Unfortunately, I am unable to locate the sidebar editing feature within the editing interface.
I would greatly appreciate your assistance in resolving this matter. If there are specific steps or tools, I need to use to access the sidebar editing options, kindly guide me through the process.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #18496 (New): PHP 8+ Compatibilityhttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/184962023-07-21T22:45:40ZRaymond Hoh

We're currently running PHP 7.4 in our PHPCS set up and on the GC server, but some of us are using PHP 8+ in our development environments. (For example, #16948.)

This will be a catch-all ticket to address deprecated notices, fatal errors and the like.

Also, just to note that PHP 7.4 reached end-of-life back in November 2022. Upgrading to PHP 8.2 is probably good to think about when we decide to move hosts. PHP 8.2 is supported until December 2025, while PHP 8.0 will reach end-of-life in November 2023.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #18117 (New): ourtlc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/" is giving us a "critical e...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/181172023-04-25T23:43:20ZMarilyn WeberMweber@gc.cuny.edu

Hi All,

I am using the "Tag Groups" plugin on this site: https://tlcassignments.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

A few weeks ago Ray helped me with the front page boxed tag display, which is looking good, but I am hoping to refine the tag lists using the plugin on this front page, and within each post.

First question:

The Tag Groups plugin allows the admin to create groups of tags; in the case of this site I have grouped tags as either "type" or "feature" of an assignment. You can see these groupings in the dashboard in tags and tag group admin.

On the front page right now you are seeing how the tag groups shortcode displays "tag list" under "type" and all tags as a boxed tag cloud under feature. Ideally, I would like the tags in the "type" group to display under the "type of assignment" heading in the same boxed format that ray designed (same as category display)and the feature tags to display under the "assignment feature" heading.

Second question:

Within each post, I would like to use shortcode to auto-populate the "type" tags in the type column and the "feature" tags in the feature column. Ideally the shortcode displayed tags lists would be live links, so a user could see that the assignment feature "student choice" and click "student choice" to see other, similarly tagged assignments. These lists do not need to be boxed (as they would be on front page) a simple list would make sense here.
Sample post: https://tlcassignments.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2023/04/03/documentary-analysis/

Does this make sense? Thanks for your help with this. I have poked around and tried various short code but could not get the tag groups to display correctly.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #17950 (Reporter Feedback): No longer receiving email notifications a...https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/179502023-03-31T17:48:24ZGina Cherry

The last two posts I published did not generate email notifications. When I published the post today, I no longer even saw a check box option for sending the notification to the group that usually appears near the Publish button.

Hi Ray, All,

I am helping with the CILC folks on this site: https://cilc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/heritage-arabic-ebook/teaching-materials/

They want to be able to to click the PDF link (below the embed) and have it open in a new tab (and not download right away). I can't seem to figure out the right settings to get this to work as they want.

Any suggestions?
CUNY Academic Commons - Feature #17797 (New): Widgets in Pages for custom category listshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/177972023-03-08T18:34:10ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

I am building out an OER TLC assignment library on the Commons. I will need to make the taxonomies and folksonomies visible to users so the site and assignments can be easily searched and navigated, kind of like it is here (bottom of page): http://teachoer.org/

On the TeachOER site, I used "widgets on pages" plugin that allows a user to group widget and use shortcode to insert. I like how the widget displays on the front end not just as a lit but as buttons. (I Think this may be the theme?)
https://datamad.co.uk/wordpress-plugins/widgets-on-pages/

My question: can we add widgets in pages plugin for use on this Commons site: https://tlcassignments.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

AND/OR can you advise: is there a better way to do this now with the block editor? I can imagine making buttons with custom links to each category archive but I think this would be tedious. Right now, I see that the "category block only lists categories, and does not display them in a pleasing way.

There is no rush on this, I don't need to complete the prototype library site until April.
CUNY Academic Commons - Bug #17697 (Reporter Feedback): plugin requesthttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/176972023-02-21T17:09:54ZLaurie Hurson

Hi All,

1. The user has no "my sites" tab on "Sites" page when logged in
2. Site does not come up as linked to users account
3. Site is not returned in search in sites directory

I am not sure what is going on here but I think there is a bug somewhere in the linking of the site and user.

Hi All,

The release of the OER tag and the Open Education institute I ran in June has highlighted some issues with the Creative Commons license widget we are running on the commons, particularly on sites.

By default, every page of every site site is tagged with a CC license. I think we should revisit that. People may want some of their content openly licensed but not all of it. For example, Raffi Khatchadourian wrote to the Zendesk asking how to list some of his pages on his main site as oer but not all of the pages. Currently this is not really possible - the CC license is only available on a page by page basis or it encompasses the whole site. I am proposing we allow CC for some pages and no clear open license on other pages (hence signifying they are not open).

I think the automatic, by default tagging of every page as CC, regardless of whether a user has chosen the CC license knowingly, is an issue.

This also raises questions about creating an option to allows folks to restrict some of their work. Maybe we don't want to provide a "closed" option but this could also occur through simply not applying a CC license by default to every page and allowing a user to knowingly assign the CC license to only "open" content.

I think all of these issues, ideas, and options warrant a discussion, which hopefully we can pick up in the fall.
NYCDH Community Site - Feature #10624 (New): QMSS - Flyer and Cardshttps://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/106242018-10-29T17:36:33ZAlex IrklievskiAIrklievski@gc.cuny.edu
