<p>While this article reveals risks and deficiencies, I continue to think that AI could become a useful way to explain records of slavery at the individual level. We are working on a project we call NESRI 2.0 which involves adding several more fields to will enrich the interconnections between the 90,000 records that we have.</p>
<p>If we eventually do this system-wide, we have the challenge of presenting this to users. I first approach is to add a table to our locality reports that lists the families, in the locality specified for the report, with a link to click into the records of any family, so people in Boston can learn of families of enslaved people in the 1700s. But I also think that I can code the database to construct a test string that can be submitted as a prompt to an AI service to get back an essay about the family - the names and relationships and events in their lives and in the community when they lived. The service would have to have guardrails to not make up information.</p>

<p>Rather than using his own personal and public CV, Zach is available to help build out a model graduate student CV for us to use in outreach about the new CV features.</p>
<p>To get this going, a few questions: <br />- should zach spin up a new account to go with this CV? <br />-- If yes, should the new account and model CV be done on the dev site and then moved over to production? <br />- If we are using this model CV for outreach (and possibly documentation? not sure) what is the timeline on when this needs to be up and running?</p>

<p>As a starting point, during the last few meetings we discussed establishing a Commons archive or backup. We need to hash out what that would mean:</p>

<p>We have a quick question about the PDF embedder: Has the Commons team ever considered the paid version? We ask because we have a newsletter with hyperlinks that we can't embed. and it would be great to have that functionality, which I believe the paid plugin has.</p>
<p>The only alternative I know of is to use an embedded Google doc, but we don't do that because we would have to reformat all of our existing PDFs, which we’ve tried and found not worth it (tables and images take forever to convert from Word to gdocs). Anyway, we're just curious in general if the Commons has considered or would consider it, if it's not too expensive!</p>

<p>Of these, a number are purely informational. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 A right-hand notifications pane could have a message that summarizes the information ("So-and-so replied to your forum post") and then links to that content.</p>
<p>Several of them have obvious follow-up actions. 3, 4, 10, perhaps 11. A right-hand notifications pane could have a link that points you to the page where you'd perform the action, or perhaps it could show you the interface for actually performing the action (ie, accepting the friendship).</p>

<p>For the reply-by-email plugin, we use IMAP mode, which relies on connecting to a GMail account to check for new replies and posting items to the Commons.</p>
<p>This isn't the best for performance because IMAP mode uses a long-running process to do the new email checks. RBE also has another mode called Inbound mode, which works on a per-email basis. This mode is already being used to create new forum topics with a custom, group email address (<code>GROUP@groups.commons.gc.cuny.edu</code>), but we haven't fully switched over to using Inbound for replies and private messages because IMAP was already in use.</p>
<p>Some things-to-do before switching:</p>
<p>1. Since we already have set up the <code>GROUP@groups.commons.gc.cuny.edu</code> email address for new forum topics, would it be okay to keep using this email domain for replies as well? (Regular reply email addresses would look something like <code>fb2da051ba2b7220193cca6ada@groups.commons.gc.cuny.edu</code>). The alternative is to set up another email address domain like <code>X@reply.commons.gc.cuny.edu</code>, but RBE hasn't been tested with two different email domains yet. Some background info here: <a class="external" href="https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/2880#note-24">https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/2880#note-24</a>. I'd say for now, we should keep using the same email domain unless anyone has any objections.</p>
<p>2. Once we switch to Inbound mode exclusively, replying to older items with the <code>cunyacademiccommons+IDENTIFIER@gmail.com</code> GMail address would no longer work. I was thinking we can set up an auto-replier in GMail, so if a new email matches the body of the RBE format, an auto-reply with the following message could be sent:</p>

<p>Sara's asked how she can see how often users are clicking on links in the various parts of the public/private new homepage. I'm not sure our Google Analytics (GA) setup is configured for this currently, and I pretty quickly hit my own knowledge and implementation limits on it so wanted to throw it to the dev team here.</p>
<p>If I understand correctly, we need to use the new GA-4 (as opposed to Universal Analytics or UA, see <a class="issue tracker-3 status-5 priority-4 priority-default closed" title="Support: Google Analytics 4 tagging (Resolved)" href="https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/13511">#13511</a>) features to do this. I also believe we'll need to set up Events that recognize clicks in different areas of the page. I took a stab below at outlining the different sections. From here though, I'm a bit out of my depth. I think this is more of a challenge due to the dynamic nature of the link lists -- the URL of the link is actually less important, for these purposes, than if I clicked on it in My Sites or Activity From My Campus or wherever. It may matter that most of these links may not technically be "outbound" by GA's definition because they're still on the commons.gc.edu domain, but that's unclear to me too.</p>
<p>I'm not sure if we could tie different GA-4 events via CSS class to these sections or something similar, or if we need to append additional CSS or other code to structure this correctly. I also assume we'll be inserting more GA-4 code into the site, whether it makes sense to do that manually or via the Google Tag Manager service seemingly offered for things like this. GA-4 collects general events like all 'clicks' automatically, but nothing more granular without customization:</p>

<p>I'm also not really sure of the best way to track clicks on the more universal parts of the site, like the header (nav) and footer. There used to be a Chrome extension that was half-decent at this, but Google stopped supporting/updating that in 2019.</p>
<p>I think I'll leave it here for now, in the hopes that Boone/Ray/Jeremy have some experience to bear here, or can at least pick up the more technical parts of this thread. Let me know what else I can do to help steer and describe this.</p>
<p>One last thing - Sara would also like to be able to see how often the People page filters are being used, and which aspects are the most popular. I believe we set up something like this in <a class="issue tracker-2 status-5 priority-4 priority-default closed" title="Feature: Track directory filter use in Google Analytics (Resolved)" href="https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/11760">#11760</a>, but I'm not sure if it's still functional or how to find it in our Analytics dashboard.</p>
