Description

Collette Sosnowy was recently made an admin for the JustPublics@365 site and reported that it continually logs her out every few minutes when she is editing within the blog dashboard. This has been happening for several weeks on more than one computer/browser. A box appears randomly telling her to log in, which opens in a new window, but then she can go back to the previous window to continue editing.

Hi Collette - Sorry for the troubles you've been experiencing.

Just so I'm clear on what's happening here: you are being logged out every few minutes while actively using the site? Or is the logging-out happening when you navigate away from the page (such as to use a different tab) or when you leave your computer for a while?

In my tests, I've been unable to reproduce the problem, which is making it a bit difficult to diagnose. Any more details you can give about the circumstances that lead up to your being logged out would be most helpful in attempting to establish a pattern. For example, you've mentioned that this happens on different browsers and different computers, and always when in the Dashboard. As you use the site, could you please take note of whether there are further patterns of use that you can nail down? Does it always happen when clicking a certain link (or certain family of links)? Or does it always happen when you're clicking away from a certain kind of page?

Hi Boone,

Sorry for the delay. Here's what I've observed so far. It happens when I am writing blog posts, when I click update/save draft (which I do often when composing), it logs me out. A window appears that tells me I need to log back in, and will open in a new window but that I will be able to return to editing in the previous window. I am able to do this without losing any of the content I created. It has happened in a number of browsers on several Macs. Matt asked me to try it on PC. I was only able to be on a PC for a few minutes, but it did not log me off. Not sure if this is reliable info since I wasn't on it for long.

I'll let you know if I have any new observations.

Thanks!

Here's a screen shot of the message I get when I get kicked out. This was a post I was editing and left dormant for a few minutes, but it often happens after only a minute or two.

Thanks for the additional details, Collette. I still don't have any specific guesses as to what might be causing this. I'm wondering if there is some sort of cookie mismatch being caused by another plugin on the site. Do you happen to have the Commons open in more than one tab in the same browser when you experience this issue?

Can I ask you to gather a bit more debugging info for me? I'd like to see a screenshot of your cookies from before and after this problem happens. If it's not too much trouble, please do the following:
- Log in as you'd normally do, and navigate to the Edit Post page
- In Firefox, go to Edit > Preferences > Privacy, and click the "Remove individual cookies" link about halfway down the box. In the screen that pops up, type 'commons.gc.cuny.edu' to filter out all but the relevant values. Make sure that the window is big enough to show all the text from both the Site and Cookie Name columns, and take a screenshot. Post it here.
- Then, use the site as you normally do. The next time WP logs you out in this way, do the same thing, so I can see before-and-after shots of the cookie list.

Thanks for your help working through this one.

I'm cleaning out some old tickets, and I'm going to close this one, as I haven't heard updates in a while. Collette, if you are continuing to have problems along the lines described above, please feel free to reopen the ticket and we can pick up where we left off last year.
