Description

The number of posts per page option is separated from the page where the information is actually displayed, so it is difficult for the user to see the effect of his/her actions.

Incorporate the number of posts per page option onto the ‘Forum’ page, so the user can easily see which he/she prefers.

The dropdown on My Settings > Forums affects all forums for the user. Presumably the interface that displays on specific thread would be specific only to that thread? Should it be persistent even for that thread? How do we indicate that the setting doesn't do anything when you're looking at a Threaded view? See #4220.

Setting aside the disconnect between having the global setting available in My Settings but unavailable where the forum posts actually live, is there value in having this setting on every forum page? How frequently will people want to modify this value? Is it worth the cluttter? IMO, the gain in internal consistency is not worth it if there is no actual demand for the feature.

For the sake of context, here are some old tickets that explain why we have this setting at all: #3192 (especially https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/3192#note-3; this ticket may be a duplicate of that one), #578, #555.

Sam, if you can give a little more detail about how you think we should move forward, that'd be great. (My recommendation is to do nothing, but I'm biased :) ) Then we'll assign to Ray for implementation.

I generally agree with Boone's assessment.

While implementing "Number of Posts", I took a cue from other forum scripts to see what they were doing and they do not have such an option when viewing a thread.

However, vBulletin, the forum script I mentioned in a previous issue, does offer users (and guests) the option to change the "Thread Display" mode in the thread. It looks like this option is only visible if an admin allows it to be shown. When a user toggles this setting from a thread, vB uses a cookie to save the setting. The cookie takes precedence over the global option.

FWIW, vBulletin also adds a "Thread Tools" dropdown menu in the thread with the following options:
  • Show printable version
  • Email this page
  • Subscribe to thread

They also have a "Search thread" link as well.

The Threaded view setting limitation really throws a wrench in this one! That would mean that the option should not be visible in individual forums if a user's overall setting were set to threaded, which I assume is a fair amount of work, and probably not worth it for something that has yet to be requested by users.

Knowing that, let's put this on hold to see if it ever comes up with users. I already have plans to include some forum use in the next round of user testing so we can see if it's mentioned then.
