Description

Hi, one of the LILAC members requests that emails generated by forum posts be given non-generic subject lines. Right now every email sent from any group's forum seems to have "CUNY Academic Commons: New discussion board activity" as the subject line. It would be great to have some indication of the group or forum topic in the subject line of the email. Thanks for considering!

Good idea, Maura. I've been frustrated in the past because Gmail sorts all of these emails into a single conversation due to their similar titles.

Do you have any suggestions for what the subject line might be? Keeping in mind that subject lines should not be overkill, here are a few different pieces of info that might be candidates:
- Poster name
- Topic name
- Group/forum name
- Post excerpt

I wonder if the words "CUNY Academic Commons" might be eliminated altogether, given that the sender of the email comes up as "CUNY Academic Commons". That would give more space to play with.

Boone, that's a great idea to remove CUNY Academic Commons from the subject line, since the AC is the sender. That will save us lots of space.

I think that forum and topic are the most impt pieces of info, though they can be quite long (e.g., "[H] LILAC (Library Information Literacy Advisory Committee)"). Poster name and post excerpt seems less crucial to me. The old AC moodle used to use just the topic name,

Maura, I was making some other changes to the text of the notification emails so I decided to tackle this issue too. Here's what I've come up with: ===
New discussion activity in the group "[group name]", topic "[topic name]" ===

An example:
New discussion activity in the group "Totally cool!", topic "Enjoy this forum post"

I also added the name of the topic to the body of the email itself.

Let me know what you think of these changes, and if you're satisfied, go ahead and close the ticket.

Just tested this out and it looks good to me. Thanks Boone!

I'm actually wondering whether we could shorten and repunctuate this slightly. How about:

New forum post in the group "[group name]": topic "[topic name]"

?

You know what, Boone? Someone brought this up at the last CAT meeting, complaining that the subject lines were both too long and that the length of the common tag [CUNY Academic Commons] meant that it was hard to tell from which group the message had come.

So, I'm reopening this ticket because we need to consider alternatives. My suggestion:

[CAC] New post in "[group name]": topic "[topic name]"

What do others think? And Maura, you were there -- do you agree with this criticism? It seemed to me that multiple people agreed with it.

Matt, you're right, that did come up at the meeting, sorry to space it. I like your suggestion; another option is to move the "[CUNY Academic Commons]" to the end of the subject line rather than the beginning. I think either would work well. Thanks!

Do we have a consensus on what it should be changed to?

Actions #13

No consensus yet. Here are a few options:

[CAC] New post in "[group name]": topic "[topic name]"

[CUNYCommons] New post in "[group name]": topic "[topic name]"

New post in "[group name]": topic "[topic name]" [CUNY Academic Commons]

I think the convention is to put the site name first, but I guess we don't have to stick to that.

I vote (c). Don't like the abbreviations. CAC is OK but CUNYCommons is not so hot, and doesn't really save that many characters anyway.

My vote is for (c), too.

(though I kind of like CAC for the sound it makes when you say it.)

Okay, sounds fine to me:

New post in "[group name]": topic "[topic name]" [CUNY Academic Commons]

I just posted 2 new messages to the LILAC forum and didn't get any email about them.

However, I replied to an older message on the LILAC forum and did get an email.

And the subject line looks great. Thanks Boone!

Maura - Commons email is a bit messed up this morning. When I was making the fixes, I would get some emails right away, while others would take five or ten minutes to hit my inbox. If you don't get those expected emails in the next hour or two, please open a bug ticket to that effect. In the meantime, since this feature appears to have been completed, I'll close this ticket.
