Description

I notice that the City Tech OpenLab now provides email notifications of new blog posts that are connected to groups through the group activity notification system. It's a nice feature for groups that are using connected blogs extensively. Since we do have an increasing number of graduate courses using the Commons, and since email notifications are desired particularly in such cases (as shown by recent tickets and email correspondence), I think we should look into creating a specific group template that would include such functionality.

Alternately, we could consider turning on this functionality for all groups. Something to think about and discuss.

Are we certain that this isn't already the case? Groupblog posts should create group activity items, and group activity items should be sent via the Group Email Subscription setting (as long as one's subscribed to All Email).

Hmmm -- something might have changed. In the past, I have made this work by activating a plugin called "BuddyPress Group Email Subscription" in the blog attached to a group, but I no longer see that in the list of available plugins. Looks like the plugin was just recently updated - http://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/2320 . Did the name change?

Haven't tested the actual functionality yet, in part because I would do so in a hidden group/blog, and hidden states tend to affect activity notices. Can you confirm that creating a hidden group/hidden blog would be a reasonable way to test this, or do I need to create public/public instances?

This is our networkwide plugin for email subscriptions. There's no need to activate it on single sites.

No, I can't confirm 100%, but you can try it.

It worked! I'm confident that this didn't work automatically in the past, but I'm excited to see that it works now. I wonder whether this works only for new groups/blogs or whether it should work for all groups that have been connected to blogs.

Cool! New vs existing blog shouldn't matter - it's triggered by the new activity item, which happens for all group blogs.

I'll close this ticket. If you find further issues, feel free to reopen.
