The CAS data is a record of all freshmen applications (<em>not</em> transfer applications) that were sent to UAPC. Most applicants applying directly to the college are not included in the CAS data (specific phases can identify directly admitted students in the CAS data who were reported to UAPC). Screenshots of the first-time freshman application are posted <a href="files/FTF_Application_Screenshots.pdf">here</a>.<br>

OIRA staff compile fall admission statistics for recruitment purposes using CAS data from UAPC. These data are posted <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://cuny.edu/admissions/undergraduate/prepare/prepare-as-a-freshman.html" rel="nofollow">here</a>. However, these statistics may differ from internal statistics that the colleges have for reasons including:<br>

<br>

<ul>

<li>These data being generated using the data for admitted (not necessarily enrolled) applicants.</li>

<li>Only applicants allocated (students admitted to their highest college choice) to the college being counted in the statistics for that college. For example, if an applicant applies to City, Hunter and Baruch and is admitted to all three colleges, the student’s application data will only count as an admit to City, rather than to Hunter or Baruch.<ul><li>Note that this methodology is different from the standard OIRA Multiple Application/Multiple Admission methodology which is used in the App_Adm_Enr tables in the IRDB.</li></ul>

</li>

<li>SAT scores being based on recent graduates from domestic high schools only.</li>

<li>Separating out regularly admitted and SEEK applicants. If both groups are combined, the mean CAA and SAT scores will be lower.</li>

<li>Directly admitted students being excluded.</li>

<li>Certain populations of admitted applicants being excluded from the Admission Profile posted at the website above. For example, OSS and conditional admits were excluded from the fall 2016 Admission Profile.</li>

For several years, OIRA has been preparing a data file for college (now incorporated into the IRDB/Discoverer with the table name CAS_APP_ADM_ENR/CAS app adm enr) that allows one to count the number applicants, admitted, and enrolled freshmen, particularly useful for admission and yield rate computations. The table has a small subset of student demographic and background data, much less than is in the standard CAS file (or in CAS Limited Facts).<br>

<a name="x-SAT%20Scores"></a><strong><u>SAT Scores</u></strong>

</h2>

 <br>

Fall SAT scores for freshmen can be found in three places:<br>

<br>

<ul>

<li>The CAS Limited Facts table in the History Facts Business Area of the IRDB.</li>

<li>The CAS_APP_ADM_ENR table in the Special Business Area of the IRDB (note that this table uses the MA-MA methodology described above).</li>

<li>The merged CAS-SHOW file that is sent to the colleges, which include data for all applicants and do not use the MA-MA methodology described above.</li>

</ul>

<br>

<u><strong>New (2016) SAT Scores</strong></u><br>

<br>

<ul>

<li>Beginning in the spring of 2016, the College Board made <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/inside-the-test/compare-old-new-specifications" rel="nofollow">significant changes</a> to the SAT.</li>

<li>UAPC is concording new SAT scores to old scores using <a href="files/Attachment%204-SAT-ACT%20Conversion%20Chart.pdf">this concordance table</a>. Furthermore, the method used to assess proficiency has been revised to take into account the new SAT scores (<a href="files/Attachment%203-SAT%20Process%20Chart.pdf">please click this link to see the new process used to assess proficiency</a>).Beginning in the spring 2017 term, the raw new SAT score data were loaded to CUNYfirst and are being manually added to the CAS files.The SAT score data are supplemented by SAT data reported by the DOE.These data are held at the NEWSATTOT, NEWSATEBRW,and NEWSATMAT variables in the CAS files, beginning with the spring 2017 term.</li>

<li>The data are “superscored” – that is, if the applicant had data for multiple test instances, the data that are reported in the CAS file are the highest score for each section. Following the same methodology used by UAPC, the NEWSATTOT variable is simply the sum of the highest scores for each section.</li>

<li>These data aren’t necessarily the data that were used for the applicant’s admission. CUNY receives SAT scores via mail and electronically. The data loaded into CUNYfirst are only for applicants who submitted their SAT scores electronically.</li>

<li>In the fall 2017 CAS file, 69% of all applicants have old (or new concorded to old) SAT score data and 61% of applicants have new SAT score data.</li>

<li>New SAT scores have been added to the CAS_FILE1 and CAS Limited Facts IRDB tables and will be added to the CAS App Adm Enr IRDB table in the near future.</li>

</ul>

<h2 id="toc1">

<a name="x-Term"></a><u><strong>Term</strong></u>

</h2>

 <br>

The table CAS_LIMITED_FACTS has two date fields:<br>

<ul>

<li><span style="line-height: 1.5;">CAS_TERM_DATE</span></li>

<li><span style="line-height: 1.5;">TERM_ENROLLED_DATE</span></li>

</ul>

<br>

The first is a measure of when the student applied and the second is when the student enrolled. At the time of writing (5/21/2015) these fields were the same for all students in this table.<br>

<br>

The RECDATE variable in the CAS files indicate the date when CUNY first received an application from each applicant (which could be many years in the past.).<br>

<br>

<h2 id="toc2">

<a name="x-Common%20Core%20Regents%20Exam%20Data"></a><strong><u>Common Core Regents Exam Data</u></strong>

</h2>

 <br>

Beginning in the fall 2015 term, UAPC began providing data for the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 common core regents exams to OIRA. These data are available upon request to OIRA in the CAS SPSS files for fall 2015 and spring 2016 (please note that as these exams were first offered in June 2014, the fall 2015 and spring 2016 files contain very little common core regents exam data), and will be included in the merged CAS-SHOW files that are sent to the colleges from fall 2016 forward. The English common core regents exam data are held in the same variable as the non-common core English regents exam data. As of December 2016, these data are also available in the CAS Limited Facts table in the IRDB.<br>

<h2 id="toc3">

<a name="x-Determining%20Admits:"></a><strong><u>Determining Admits:</u></strong>

</h2>

There are a number of ways to determine admits to a college:<br>

<br>

1) You can use the combination of the CHOICE and ELGCH variables in the merged CAS-SHOW files.<br>

2) You can use the ELIG variables in the merged CAS-SHOW files.<br>

3) You can use the ALLOC variable for the applicant’s highest eligible college in the merged CAS-SHOW files. If you use the ALLOC variable, you can use the REGSPEC variable to determine the type of admission of the applicant.<br>

<br>

Please note that most direct admits will not have data at the above variables (as their data are not provided to UAPC by the college). Therefore, if a student is enrolled but does not have application data, they should be added to the number of applicants and admits.<br>

<br>

4) Alternatively, if it would be okay to use OIRA’s MA/MA methodology described above, you can use the CAS App Adm Enr table in the Special Business area of the IRDB. If you use CAS App Adm Enr, you can use the applicant flag and one of the two admit flags. One of the benefits to using CAS App Adm Enr is that using the SEEK CD Choice field, you can see the type of admission of all admits to a certain college and not just to the college of allocation. Another benefit is that all direct admits are automatically counted as applicants and admits.<br>

<a name="x-Foreign%20Language%20Codes:"></a><strong><u>Foreign Language Codes:</u></strong>

Foreign language 1 should be the primary foreign language. Foreign language 2 can be the next in number of years or it can be a combination of two or more foreign languages. The code that UAPC uses for two or more is 997.<br>

<a name="x-GED%20Applicants:"></a><strong><u>GED Applicants:</u></strong>

Scores on the high school equivalency test are converted to CAAs using <a href="files/GED_CAA_Conversion.pdf">this table</a>.<br>

<a name="x-CAS%20Data%20Vs.%20Data%20Reported%20by%20the%20Welcome%20Center/UAPC:"></a><strong><u>CAS Data Vs. Data Reported by the Welcome Center/UAPC:</u></strong>

There are a number of reasons why the number of applicants in the CAS file will not match the number of applicants reported by the Welcome Center/UAPC for any given term:<br>

<br>

<ul>

<li>The records from the Welcome Center/UAPC come from a live production file, so they can change from day to day if, say, a student who first applied two years ago re-activates an application for a new term. The CAS data are from frozen extracts taken at the end of each admissions cycle.</li>

<li>The Welcome Center/UAPC's data reflect all applicants who started applications, including some applications that were not completed and processed. The CAS file contains only records that were completed and processed for admission.</li>

<li>When comparing NYC DOE data: if an applicant has an OSISID but was not HSTYPE=2, then the admissions staff say that the OSISID was likely entered by the student on the application and not used in admissions.</li>

<li>The Welcome Center/UAPC include all applications received for a term, including those from applicants who first applied in previous years.</li>

</ul>

The Student Experience Survey is a survey given every even year since 2002 of all degree seeking undergraduate students in the CUNY system. Results of the surveys are posted here:<br>

Prior to the 2014 survey, a random sample of students would be invited to complete the survey using a mailed paper survey. Beginning in 2014, the survey was only able to be completed online and the survey moved from a sample survey to a population (all eligible students) survey. The 2016 survey kept this same methodology but was managed completely internally.<br>

In May 2017, a webinar was presented that provided information about the Student Experience Survey.<br>
