Description

I am having several ZD reports that Sites set as public are becoming private. Frustratingly, only one of the 5 complaints have sent me a URL - https://soccercolombia.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Looking into it.

I've got full records for database changes going back to December 2. I've looked through and I don't see a single update to the "blog_public" setting for https://soccercolombia.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Note that this site appears to have been created from the Default site template, and https://default-template.commons.gc.cuny.edu - the template site - was set to be blog_public=-3. So this site, and many others that were created from this site, inherited the privacy setting. I can find no evidence that this setting has been changed since Dec 2 either. So - as far as I can see - this is not a new issue.

I've switched the default privacy setting of the Default Template to 1 - fully public - to match the other site templates. This will affect sites created in the future.

Existing site owners may change their privacy levels at Dashboard > Settings > Reading.

Marilyn, based on the reports you're getting, does this seem like an adequate resolution?

Thanks, Marilyn. All of these sites were created in the last few days, and thus their privacy levels are explained as above.

It dawns on me that there may be some load-order problems related to the way that the privacy setting selected by the user at the time of site creation is applied to the completed site. I don't have the time to look into this until tomorrow, but I'll examine and see if it can be addressed.

In the meantime, there's no reason to believe that existing setting are being incorrectly modified (as was originally suggested, which is what rightly warranted the 'Urgent' status). It's more a matter of there being a mismatch between the creation interface and setting actually applied at the time of site creation.

I can change the privacy settings of the sites listed above, but I don't know whether, as a matter of policy, we want for me to do that. Matt, can you please weigh in?

I identified the bug described above and fixed it, so that newly created sites reflect the blog_public chosen during creation: https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac-site-templates/commit/5e65e14867ed706c07ad6a643d77545743268cac This change is deployed.

Matt and Marilyn, please let me know what you'd like me to do about the sites above.

I don't think you need to do anything. I set the following instructions to Tim Dalton:

We apologize. There was a problem with the template. To fix your site, go to Dashboard, then Settings, then Reading. You'll see site visibility choices there. Please select "Allow search engines to index". Thanks!

And he replied - Thanks! I will tell my students!

Said the same to two other ZD tix, one has replied "success!"
