Description

A colleague of mine created the following blog: http://cunyspsmarketing.commons.gc.cuny.edu and wants to add many SPS folks as subscribers. We just tried to do some testing before we invite everyone and are experiencing some issues.

One of the people testing out the blog is not a member of the Commons and has not yet received any type of email notification. I went to one of my blog posts as a reference: http://connections.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2010/07/18/add-a-new-user-to-your-blog/, but it looks like the add new user page has changed from the time that I published this post. There are now two areas where blog admins can add users: Add Exisiting User and Add New User. According to my blog post only Commons members can be added to blogs, but the Add New User area leads me to believe that we can add non-Commons members. Am I correct in this assumption and if so, does this create their account on the Commons as well??

Also, I did receive a "joining confirmation" email for this group at my GC email account, which I believe must be tied to a test user account because after I selected the link in the email I cannot access the blog. It asks me to enter my username and password and when I click submit, it takes me to the dashboard of the first blog I created on the Commons. I'm assuming this is because I changed my Commons email to , but it raises a red flag to me because the person trying to add users to their blog might not know that the person they are trying to add may have changed their email account. Maybe I'm an odd case because I have multiple accounts, but that may not be the reason why I cannot access it as a subscriber.

Can I ask you to do a bit of experimentation with this? I am pretty sure that this box checks against the limited email domain list, so that if you try inviting a non-CUNY address, you'll get back an error message. In any case, it would be nice to make it clearer.

I think that's what's happening in this case. Not sure how we could account for the more general problem of not knowing whether a user has changed his/her email address. I guess that, in that case, people should just use the username, which can easily be gotten by looking up the user in the Members directory. Does that make sense?

I will certainly do some testing, but I know that the invitation was to a cuny.edu account. I think I have a CUNY email account that I haven't used yet so I will test with that and also test what happens when the invitation is sent to a non-CUNY email account.

Yes, this makes much more sense to me.

I did some testing and it looks like you can only send invitations to registered users of the Commons. My colleague did in fact receive an error message when she invited someone with a cuny.edu email account that wasn't on the Commons.

Is it possible to remove the Add New User area so folks know that they can only add members of the Commons?

Good idea. I'm not sure how hard this is (the WP Dashboard is notoriously difficult to customize). I'll investigate. Thanks for looking into it, Sarah.
