And when I go into the backend to edit a post, I am prompted with a database connection message.

A fatal error was being triggered in \Automattic\Jetpack\Connection\Urls::get_protocol_normalized_url(). Jetpack fetches an option called 'jetpack_sync_https_history_site_url' and then treats it as an array. In this case, the value was being returned from pre_option() was the string '500000'.
The value in the database was (correctly) a serialized array. The string '500000' was being returned out of the alloptions cache. Clearing the site cache made the problem go away.
I'm unsure how this kind of cache corruption could take place. It's pretty deep in the internals of Jetpack. I'd recommend we take no further action at this time, until and unless we hear that the issue is arising again.
