Description

Jackie Cahill
Program Coordinator
The Futures Initiative

Writes "I am currently working on a timeline for my MALS capstone project that I would like to host on the CUNY Academic Commons.

I would like to be able to tag entries on this timeline so they can be navigable by subject. Unfortunately, the current timeline plugins that are available will not let me use tags (tags are a pro feature). I did find one that would allow me to tag for free, called "Post Timeline:" https://posttimeline.com/.

Would it be possible to add this as a plugin on the Commons? I saw on one of the help pages that we could request a plugin to be added by writing this address. It would really help with my project."

Here are her replies to the standard questions

What's the name of the plugin/theme? *
Smart Post Show
In a few words, what does it do? *
This allows a user to display posts in different formats (for example, grids, carousels, and timelines). I need the timeline functionality.
Please provide a link to the plugin on the WordPress theme repository or (https://wordpress.org/themes/) plugin repository (https://wordpress.org/plugins/) *
https://wordpress.org/plugins/post-carousel/
Please research the release history and popularity of the plugin. How many times has it been downloaded? When was it last updated? *
There are 20,000+ active installations and it was last updated 3 weeks ago.
How is the plugin/theme different from what's already provided on the Commons? *
There is a timeline plugin (Cool Timeline) already on the Commons. However, this does not allow you to create timelines from existing posts (and therefore, it does not allow for tagged entires on the timeline). I need the tagging functionality for my project, and I like that the entries will be full posts with the Smart Post Show tool.
Please let us know who you are (include a link to your site) and who will use this tool? *
I'm working on my MALS capstone project: https://cunyinthenews.commons.gc.cuny.edu. I just started working on it so there's nothing there yet, I was just testing out the different plugins available. I am making a timeline of reporting about CUNY. It's just me using the tool.

Scott, could I get a quick review from you before adding this plugin? The reporter may be right that it's better than available options, but I want another opinion.

This plugin does a lot of other things besides displaying a timeline. The Timeline that it creates is very limited unless you get the Pro version - it only creates a carousel, which I think our slider plugins can already do. I looked around for an alternative and tested this one - https://wordpress.org/plugins/post-timeline/ which seems to have a lot of options. There are others as well. I will ask the member what she thinks and will get back to you.

There are 800+ active installations and it was last updated 2 months ago.
How is the plugin/theme different from what's already provided on the Commons? This plugin does not require a separate spreadsheet for data and instead uses posts to display timeline in various formats.

Thanks, Scott. The post-timeline plugin seems OK to me. Added in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/b9c5e4682d98a98ea748efb68bd99d05909ddcf9 - it will be available after next week's maintenance release.
