openJetpack stats problems

Description
Via Keeping, Gail Hayes from Kingsborough reports:
Hi...I recently contacted Jetpack to inquire about the stats that no longer grant full access for my site on CUNY Commons. I had full access, but it is now limited. I read that once the site reaches a certain number of views, you may have to request a re-eval. In any event, the response is below.
Thank you.

Hi there -
Thanks for reaching out about your use of Jetpack Stats on your site https://psyc.commons.gc.cuny.edu.
At present, Jetpack Stats is not free for university sites. We have more information on this here:
https://jetpack.com/support/jetpack-stats/free-or-paid/#non-profits-and-jetpack-stats
To obtain full access to Jetpack Stats, you will want to purchase commercial license:
https://cloud.jetpack.com/pricing#jetpack_stats_yearly
Additionally, while working on this ticket, I saw that something on your web server is blocking the communication channel between your site and Jetpack's servers.
We're seeing a block when we try to communicate via
xmlrpc.php:

I’d suggest checking if you have any security plugins activated that might be blocking our requests. If not, try contacting your hosting provider and asking them to check their security logs to see if they are blocking or otherwise limiting incoming and outgoing connections over XML-RPC.
Jetpack uses this file to communicate with your site, but some hosts block connection requests to that file.
Our requests look like the following:
File: https://psyc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/xmlrpc.php
- User-agent header: Jetpack by WordPress.com
- IPs: https://jetpack.com/support/how-to-add-jetpack-ips-allowlist/
Please ask them to allowlist the IP addresses listed above. Note that these IP addresses could change (or more could be added) at any time, which could break your connection to Jetpack. For this reason, we actually discourage allowing specific IPs, although with some hosts it may be the only option.
Let us know how that goes.
Best,
Willow

Thanks Marilyn.
I've just created a ticket with Reclaim about tweaking the Cloudflare firewall rules to allow Jetpack to access xmlrpc.php calls on the Commons. Colin and Boone have been CC'd on the ticket as well. Will update this thread once Reclaim has looked into it.

- Status changed from New to Reporter Feedback
Reclaim reports that they have tweaked the Cloudflare firewall to allow Jetpack to connect via XMLRPC to the Commons.
Marilyn, can you ask Gail to see if Jetpack is working as expected now?

She replies "It still says I need to upgrade to a commercial license."

I took a look at the link that the Jetpack support person referenced regarding commercial usage of Jetpack Stats -- https://jetpack.com/support/jetpack-stats/free-or-paid/#non-profits-and-jetpack-stats -- and it looks like if a site exceeds 1000 pages views a month that only basic stats are allowed to be viewed: https://jetpack.com/support/jetpack-stats/free-or-paid/#jetpack-stats-features-based-on-commercial-status-traffic-and-plan-type
The psyc.commons.gc.cuny.edu site probably receives more than 1000 page views a month, which explains the basic functionality. Unless the Psychology 100 team wants to pay Jetpack for full access, there isn't much more we can do here. I'm CC'ing Scott to this ticket. Scott and Colin, do we have any other plugin recommendations regarding site statistics?

Forgot to add Scott as a watcher in the last reply. Scott, do we have any other plugin recommendations regarding site statistics? Our usual recommendation, Jetpack Stats, has a 1000 monthly pageview limit that can be easily reached for busy sites.

I am a bit skeptical here. It's a Winter course page. For those who teach, do you think it's likely to have truly exceeded 1000 pages views a month?
Forgive my ignorance, but what counts as a page view? If I click on "Assignments" then "Resources" is that 2 views, for example?

I took a look at the psyc.commons.gc.cuny.edu Jetpack stats and it's quite possible that the 1000 pageview limit was reached. The stats say the site had 129 views over the past week and approximately 278 views over the previous week. If the previous two weeks before that had 593 views combined, then the limit would be reached.
I would follow up with Jetpack Support and ask if the 1000 page views per month limit is due to the psyc.commons.gc.cuny.edu subdomain site or if the per month limit takes the entire commons.gc.cuny.edu network into account. I highly doubt it is the latter, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
Forgive my ignorance, but what counts as a page view? If I click on "Assignments" then "Resources" is that 2 views, for example?
I believe so, but to verify, it's better to ask Jetpack Support as to what constitutes as a page view.

Hi Ray - There is certainly not a lack of analytics plugins on WordPress.org. See https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/analytics/
The only one I have tested so far is Independent Analytics. See https://independentwp.com/knowledgebase/dashboard/getting-started/ It has the look and feel of Google Analytics. It didn't mention if it works on Multisite, but I created a multisite local site and added on site to it, and then added the plugin to the child site and it seems to work. But I don't know the best way to test these candidates. Could we add some prospective plugins to the dev site and see how they behave there? I don't think teesting locally is going to give us much useful data.
