Earlier today, Tsubasa Berg reported the following issue with the "Custom Field" plugin:

I having an issue with a plugin that's available on the commons' platform called "Custom Field." This plugins allows users to hide/show fields on the Post edit screen, but there is a known bug with this plugin<https://wordpress.org/support/topic/342-update-breaks-add-custom-fields>, where once a field is hidden, it cannot be shown again (even if it's set back to be shown). There seems to be two solutions to this bug: A plugin called "Hotfix."(not currently available on commons)<https://wordpress.org/plugins/hotfix/> A better fix would be to add this php file<https://core.trac.wordpress.org/attachment/ticket/21829/fix-custom-fields-in-wp342.php><http://2/11/2015>, which we might not have an option to do on our platform. If you have any advise on how this can be fixed, please let me know.

Dan, could you spend a few minutes with this? The diagnosis from the user is probably incorrect - the fix announced there was included in WP 3.5. But it could be related.

I'm having trouble reproducing this error. I'm guessing that what's happening is that the user is using the "Screen Options" window at the top to hide the "Custom Fields" meta box, and then when they try to show it again they can't find it. The bug described in the thread they link to doesn't seem to be the same as the problem that they're dealing with, since you can't "show and hide" the custom fields on the post edit screen, just create, update, and delete them.

My best guess is that since the metaboxes can either show up on the side or in the big center column on the post edit screen, that when they went to re-show the Custom Fields box, it had been on the side but then showed up below the main post edit box, and they just didn't see it. Does that make sense? In any case, I can't reproduce either the issue they describe or then one described in the thread they link to. Could we ask them to send some screen shots maybe?
