If we go forward with this ticket -- https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/5520 -- let's see if we can add a line to the account registration form noting that all members are added to the Announcement group upon registration but that they can leave it or adjust their email preferences afterwards if they'd like

Hi Matt, let me know if we still want to add a blurb on the registration page about being automatically added to the Announcements group.
