Description

Hi Commons Team!

I have encountered a strange error or bug when trying to load one of my Commons site: http://nbwrites.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Whenever I attempt to go to the site - either through my admin area while signed into the Commons, or while trying to get the site to load while not signed in (which should work - it is set to be viewable by anyone), I keep getting an HTTP Error 500 - "The nbwrites.commons.gc.cuny.edu page isn’t working. nbwrites.commons.gc.cuny.edu is currently unable to handle this request." - and nothing will load.

In Chrome I get the error page. In Firefox adn Safari I get a blank white screen.

All my other Commons sites are working without a problem, so I am not sure what the issue is!

Many thanks for any help you can give!

Hi Naomi - Thanks for the report!

It appears that the problem is due to a conflict between a recent update to the Jetpack plugin and the Soundcloud Shortcode plugin. I'm imagining that you activated both of these plugins, and it was after this that the site stopped responding. Is that correct?

For the time being, I've disabled the Soundcloud Shortcode plugin, whose functionality has now been folded into Jetpack (that's what's causing the errors). Can you confirm that you can now access your site?

I'll leave this ticket open to come up with a more general solution.

Hi Boone,

I can now access the site! Thanks so much for implementing a fix so quickly!

It looks like all the soundcloud files are still embedded and playing properly - so does that mean Jetpack is still recognizing the shortcodes I had in there, and I just had a redundant plugin activated?

Many many thanks,

Naomi

Thanks for verifying, Naomi! Yes, the Soundcloud plugin conflicts with Jetpack, because Jetpack actually contains another copy of the Soundcloud plugin :-/ Not something you could have known. I'll put something in place to make sure that others can't do the same thing to their sites.

In https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/01ebf49e9ce12baf85f76f7e8b1aff1ed56a6dd7 I implemented a blacklist that prevents soundcloud-shortcode from loading when Jetpack is active. This should fix the issue for all other sites. Thanks for your patience, Naomi.
