Description

A user reports:

"I used to be a member of the group LILAC (library information literacy advisory committee). I don't know why I was dropped (I was active this past spring). Today I tried to request membership but I just get a message that there was an error sending my group membership request. The group administrator says she can see me as a registered member of the group with permissions, so it seems like something with my account? I can get into my other groups ok."

She is logged in, and has tried Firefox on a mac, and also firefox and chrome on a PC. I've attached a screenshot of the error message she is getting. I tried to join the group as well, and everything seemed fine.

Can you please share the user's login name, either here or in an email, so that I can debug?

Hi Marilyn - I think I have the info I need. I will not have time to debug until later today. I will update this ticket when I've had a chance.

Hi Marilyn - I had a look and was able to resolve the problem.

Somehow, the user had more than one membership record from the group: one from 2009, and another (an invitation) from 2012. The multiple membership records were confusing the way that BuddyPress queries for group membership, so that while the user didn't appear in the regular membership rolls, the system was also refusing her attempts to request another membership (thereby creating yet another membership record in the database). I'm unsure how this could have happened, but it seems to be an isolated incident - maybe due to a very old bug in BP that has since been fixed.

I solved the problem in this case by deleting the newer of the two membership records. Please let me know if the user is now able to access the group.
