Description

I'm thinking this is a bug. Steve Brier reports that despite having clicked on notifications for comments he is not receiving emails about the comments on posts that have been made. He's using the new course template.

I was able to replicate this on my own course template - https://marilyncourse2.commons.gc.cuny.edu

Hi Marilyn - Could you please provide more information about what it means to "click on notifications for comments"? Maybe a screenshot or a URL?

Sure, within Settings>Discussions, next to Emil Me Whenever

Is it possible that the problem is notification of one's own comments? Marilyn, I just left a comment on your post - did you get a notification of it?

Boone - I did, but that's not Steve's problem. He's not getting the comments his students leave. I'm looking into a different notification system for this.

Hm, interesting. Have you confirmed that the checkbox from your screenshot is what Steve's using in his case too? It could be that he's expecting notifications from elsewhere in the system.

I've asked him to confirm that but no reply as yet.

Boone, I haven't heard back from him. He has a group for this class as well, but for mysterious reasons he didn't connect the group to the site. Can you make me an admin on the group so that I can do it? He's willing, but unresponsive to this particular request. (He keeps thinking I'm asking to be an admin of the site, which I already am.)

Nevermind - I'm now admin on his group. Let's see if that fixes the no notification for comments problem.

Thanks for continuing to look into this, Marilyn. Given what you've said, I'm guessing that there may be some confusion about what the various email settings are meant to do. I believe that the checkbox from your screenshot only triggers email notifications to the post author, not to the site admin https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/attachments/10408/comment%20notifications.JPG; and WordPress itself doesn't have a setting for triggering email notifications about new posts. Once the site is linked to a group, however, email notifications for posts as well as for all comments (not just those on your own posts) are sent, using the group email notification system. I suspect that, now that you've connected the two, this will start working as Steve expects.

All is clear, and Steve now has an alignment with group and site, so he's notified on all thins and is happy!
