Description

I have someone asking to pw-protect just links on a page. I am meeting with them later today to determine if this is really necessary but I also looked around and found this plugin, Passster: https://wordpress.org/plugins/content-protector/

It looks like it could be helpful for this. I can see use cases where professors could protect just a few links on a page of all the class readings. Can we install this so I can try it out?

Thanks!

Could you give me the URL of a site (or several sites) where you'd like to test this? I don't want to install it in an unrestricted way, and have people start using it, only to find out that I've got to take it away because it doesn't meet your requirements.

Thanks Boone--

I can test it here: https://classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

  • Target version set to 1.19.6

I've added the plugin in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/9c9030bee3feb1f7f54bac2deea330c9b2c71d95 and restricted it to classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/9882f4241383a811c82f203ad84aa698ab0b313d

I've pushed these changes to the production site so that you can test.

Thank you Boone!

After testing I can see how this might be useful - it facilitates the creation of shortcode to hide specific sections of a page or post. I want to try a few more things and will report back in the next week or so.

Hi Boone,

I am looking to put this plugin into practice in my course this semester to trail run it.

Can it be activated on this site? https://psy327f22.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

thank you!

Laurie, have you had a chance to use this? Any thoughts about whether it should be made available across the Commons?

Hi Boone,

Sorry i never followed up about this. I did try it out here (week 1):

https://classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/course-readings/

I think some prof used password protected pages to host all their non-CC readings but I could see this plugin have a few use cases where profs teaching OER courses using 1-2 copyrighted readings would use this instead of making a page. I could also see using this to share a gdrive link on a public site.

If it's better to remove for now that is fine, but good to know the plugin's affordances for any future use.

Thanks, Laurie!

The current state of affairs is that the plugin is on the Commons, but restricted to your test site. I'd like to either (a) remove it altogether, or (b) open it up to everyone. If you can imagine recommending it to faculty teaching on the site, then I'm fine to go with (b).

Let's go with B and open it up to all.

Thanks Boone!

Sounds good to me, Laurie. I've dropped the restriction in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/17f7f83a58b54ae30fd941a31191be65ee0376f5, which will take effect after the next maintenance release.
