Bug #24169
openCan't update WP core or plugins/themes on commonsinabox.org
0%
Description
When I try to update WP within the commonsinabox.org dashboard, I get the "FTP credentials" prompt. When I try to update a plugin, I get a notice about being unable to remove the "upgrade-temp-backup" directory.
Ray, can you remind me how things are supposed to work here? I think we decided that we'd be able to handle these updates within the WP Dashboard, but it looks like the file permissions are preventing that. Is that something we can change ourselves? I seem to remember some routine for using a VPN to get shell access, but I've repressed the horrible details :-D

Had to do some digging through email to remember myself! There's an email dated July 22nd from yourself and one on the 31st from me that goes through the process.
I think we decided upon updating WP through WP-CLI and not through the WP admin dashboard. I added some code to prevent auto updates for themes and plugins, but did allow WP to automatically update core to the latest minor release. If we wanted to use the WP admin dashboard for updates, we would probably need to adjust some file/owner permissions on the server.
At least your VPN set up is better than what I have to do! For me, that requires using Remote Desktop, which takes upwards of five minutes to remote in to a GC computer and then to use their Windows PC and their shell tools to use WP-CLI for the updating.

Since I was already connected to Remote Desktop to update nycdh.org, I've gone ahead and updated the plugins and themes to the latest versions on commonsinabox.org, as well as WP core to 6.9.0.
Boone, let me know if everything looks okay on the site.
