This feature request is currently at the top of our UserVoice site. None of the BP chat plugins seem to be that highly rated (http://buddypress.org/extend/plugins/?search=chat) . . . are you aware of anything in development?

I think that chat is still used in 2015 (e.g. on google docs as people are collaborating), but no, we don't need this on the Commons
