Description

We have an incoming commons member who would really like to use the Academica theme. Is this a PITA to add? More info here - http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/academica/. Happy to answer any further questions about why I'm making this request and marking it High priority.

Thanks, Marilyn. You've linked to the theme on wordpress.com, which is the hosted version of WordPress. When requesting themes, please link to the version of the theme available for download from the theme directory on wordpress.org - http://www.wordpress.org/themes/

For more on the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org, please see this page: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Boone, here is the theme in the directory: http://wordpress.org/themes/academica

I am a little concerned that its rating is 1 star out of 5 . . . .

This user wants it because she is familiar with it, but more importantly because she wants to add audio files, and there is a BandCamp widget. Any alternate idea would probably work, just let me know.

wordpress.com maintains a separate version of the theme, which I trust more than the publicly available one. https://wpcom-themes.svn.automattic.com/academica/

Wow -- I didn't realize they made the themes there publicly available.

In any case, it sounds like this would work for us. The problem, I suppose, is that if we went this way, we wouldn't receive notifications of theme updates and would have to do so manually, which we'd probably forget to do! Thoughts?

You are correct that we won't get notification of updates. For the themes we are already using from wordpress.com, I occassionally check manually for updates. It hasn't caused us any problems yet.

Okay. Let's continue with the status quo for now, but perhaps we can keep a list of wp.com themes and try to check for updates 2-3 times per year. Seems like a task like that might be a good fit for Dom.

Thanks. Theme added in https://github.com/castiron/cac/commit/95dacaf0e129d7a1b36bb8b05457c7a7482f1123. I will open a separate ticket for the theme review suggestion.
