Description

Hi,
I'm with the Murphy Institute and we are in the process of moving our old blog, http://newlaborforum.cuny.edu/ , over to commons. Part of this involved creating a completely new site which we're finishing up. The new site uses the WP theme "make" from theme foundry (which I've attached) and a plugin "make plus" which we've purchased, and of course the "child" theme which we created.

Right now the commons site is http://newlaborforum.commons.gc.cuny.edu/ , of course once the new site is up we will want to change the url to newlaborforum.org and redirect newlaborforum.cuny.edu to newlaborforum.org.

I guess our first step is getting our new theme on our commons site.

Thanks for your help,
Charles

Hi Charles - Thanks for the request. The Commons already has Make available to its users, assuming you mean https://wordpress.org/themes/make.

Please feel free to send your child theme, either as an attachment to this post, or as a link to the relevant repository.

Can you share more info about the "Make Plus" plugin? In particular, we need to know about the licensing details in order to know how to handle it once it's been added to the Commons. Let's hold off on attaching that plugin to this ticket until we have some of those details sorted out.

Hi Boone,
I hope I'm updating this ticket correctly. Attached are all the files for our wordpress site. The plug-ins facilitate custom options like fonts, they are included in the zip. Will it be possible to get this up today/soon?

The list of included files:

make-child.zip - child theme
Theme-Customizations-Cloner-master.zip - theme settings import tool
make-child.json - child theme settings import file
make.json - parent theme settings import file
newlaborforum.wordpress.2014-11-11.xml - wordpress import file (wxr)
plugins.zip - plugin files (all plugins must be installed)
nlf.tgz - complete archive of development site, including all media files

Thanks

Hi Charles - Yes, I'm happy to help you make this transition, but usually we don't provide full-service site migration services. Can you clarify a bit what you want done with all these contents? To be clear, it sounds like you're asking for the following:

a. the child theme to be added to the Commons, and enabled + activated for your site
b. the theme settings importer plugin added to the Commons and activated on your site
c. the theme settings imported from the provided json files
d. the wxr file imported to populate the posts
e. all the plugins added from the zip file and activated on the Commons
f. media files imported to your site

Is that right?

If so, I'd like to find a way to parcel out this work between us. I will of course handle the issues related to the codebase (items a, b, and e - though I will have to review all of these items before adding them to the site). I would prefer for you to handle the actual content and settings importing if possible, if only because you know best what you expect your site to look like (items c and d; item f should not be necessary, if you tell WP to import media files when you do step d).

Regarding timing: We have a release schedule for today (the 1st, 11th, and 21st of each month). We usually ask for a few days' notice, so that I can do the necessary manual review of the provided files. I'll do my best to review the provided items for today's release, but I can't make any promises at the moment. I will update this ticket when I've had a chance to do the review.

Hi Boone,

I spoke to Matt Gold and we're on the same page. I sent you everything so that you could have/look at it if you wanted, but I don't expect you guys to handle to importing.

Is it still possible to make today's release?

thanks,
Charles

  • Status changed from Reporter Feedback to Assigned
  • Target version set to 1.7.3

The child theme of Make has been added to the Commons repo at https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/4eeed7042db7588eb7a9422c179621ab919465f1 (you do not have access to this - just putting it here for my reference). Note that I've made the following changes to it:

  • changed the folder name to newlaborforum-make-child
  • changed the Theme Name to "New Labor Forum - Make Child"

Both of these changes are to make it easier for our team to manage changes to the theme. They shouldn't affect you, except that you'll need to look for the correct theme name when you go to activate.

After the release, I will make the theme available for activation on newlaborforum.commons.gc.cuny.edu. It appears that you've hardcoded some calls to Co-Authors Plus functions in the template, so be sure not to activate the theme before activating that plugin, or you'll get a fatal error.

I'll look at the plugins next.

chimpy is added in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/99efc856cac562bc6a5d24c043f5d0254b3da7f2. It's an Envato product, and the license does not allow us to offer it to all sites on the Commons. I've added a flag that enables it only on newlaborforum.commons.gc.cuny.edu.

make-plus is added in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/ee976a1aa856b5b17173a017315409e258c9c412.

https://thethemefoundry.com/pricing/ is not very precise about what the basic license allows, but the fact that enterprise/university licenses are bracketed off strongly suggests that we are not within our rights to offer this to all sites on the Commons. For this reason, I've whitelisted the plugin only for newlaborforum.commons.gc.cuny.edu.

simp-modal-window is added in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/05956cb8aea4a8675c04e342455f41d9ed101578. As in the case of Chimpy, this is an Envato product, and will be available only on newlaborforum.commons.gc.cuny.edu.

Charles, I believe I've added all the requested items. I'll be doing the release later tonight, so please check tomorrow to ensure that all required functionality is available. If you're having problems, please feel free to reopen this ticket.

Hey Boone,

We have an updated child theme and modal window plugin (which are attached) for the http://newlaborforum.commons.gc.cuny.edu/ . This should be the last update for the site.

Thanks for help with all this.

-Charles
