The problem was a syntax error in wp-retina-2x. They'd used a syntax that is only compatible with PHP 5.4+, and we're running PHP 5.3.x. Fixed on the Commons in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/55d921de82a735c12e0dce4e7d1856d0afb5c632. The plugin author also fixed it in https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/1136758/, but then only included it in a major version update (3.2.9->3.3.0) which means that it didn't make our 21st-of-the-month schedule.
