Description

Hi,

We are trying to add share buttons to our individual blog posts only. We have tried the default WordPress share buttons as well as a different plugin. In both, we have selected in the options not to display the share buttons in the main blog page but they display anyway here: http://acert.hunter.cuny.edu/blog/#sthash.nbbknLLn.dpbs

Any ideas?

Thank you,
David dos Santos

Dan, can you take a look?

David, can you provide more information about the "default WordPress" buttons, and the plugins you've used to try to accomplish this?

We tried 'Sharing' which is under Settings > Sharing (which I assume is part of WordPress and not a plugin, please let me know if this is not the case). We also tried the plugin 'Share This'

Also, it appears on the main blog page in the excerpt but not the archive pages.

Hey Boone - not 100% sure how to get at this site on my test install. Is it a Commons site with a masked domain?

Yes, but it shouldn't have anything to do with the URL. Can you please try to reproduce the problem being described on a regular local site? I suggest using the same theme as the ACERT site in your testing.

It looks like right now the blog is using the ShareThis plugin. Have you tried going into the settings for ShareThis (should be one of the links under "Settings" in the dashboard) and then getting to the fourth page of the settings (should be called "Additional Features") and uncheck the option for "Show buttons on Post Excerpt" under the heading "Customize Post Excerpts", then go all the way to the end (page 6) and click "save". Sorry, the way that ShareThis manages its settings is pretty weird. I hope this isn't too confusing. If that doesn't work we can keep looking for another explanation.

Hi Daniel,

This was one of the first things we tried and it does not resolve the issue, the share this buttons are still appearing on the excerpts.

This issue also occurred with the default WordPress Sharing features under Settings > Sharing.

Many thanks,
David

Sorry about that.

Looking a little more deeply into this - it seems like it's just bad luck with the relationship between how the Canvas theme generates the content of the "Magazine" template, and how ShareThis decides what's an excerpt or not. So it doesn't look like there's a way to get rid of the ShareThis buttons on the Magazine template of the Canvas theme. I don't think there's default Wordpress Sharing capabilities - I don't have "Sharing" under my Settings - are you sure you don't have another plugin activated for adding sharing buttons? I think Jetpack has a module for this, which it looks like suffers from a similar but different problem as ShareThis.

There are other sharing plugins that Canvas' Magazine template would work better with, such as "Simple Share Buttons Adder" (https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-share-buttons-adder/), but I'm not sure if we want to make more of these kinds of plugins available. Boone, what do you think?

This is mostly the fault of some weird decisions on ShareThis's end, I think. They always hook the function for displaying the buttons onto both the_excerpt and the_content filters, and use an "is_singular()" test to see if the current post is an excerpt, which doesn't work right when you're inside the loop created by Canvas to display the excerpts, or really any custom loop. The other plugin I mentioned only hooks their function onto the_excerpt when you have the right option set, and otherwise just attaches it to the_content. Their widget is much more intrusive and also uglier though.

Dan, thanks for helping to work through this. Given the conversation above, I think we're going to have to accept this as a limitation of Canvas. David, if you need some help finding an alternative, please let us know.
