Description
Changing the ‘Number of Posts’ option made no difference; the number of posts per page stayed the same.
Fix so that changing the number of posts per page option works as stated.

Hi Sam,
Do you have the "Thread Display Mode" set to "Threaded"? If so, the "Number of Posts to Show Per Page" option is not applicable. If you select either of the "Linear" options, this should work as expected.
Try this out on cdev and let me know if it works for you.

Can we improve the UX here? The explanatory text about Threaded + Posts Per Page is pretty good, but I think people don't read that stuff. How about some JS or whatever that greys out the whole "per page" setting section when Threaded is selected above?

For sure. Will do this.
The explanatory text about Threaded + Posts Per Page is pretty good, but I think people don't read that stuff.

Yes, it does work as you state, Ray.
And no, I didn't read the text, so Boone's assumption about no one reading that text is likely the case!
I agree that greying out/making the 2nd dropdown unclickable when Threaded is chosen would be helpful. Additionally, having text appear only when Threaded is chosen would be helpful as well: "This option is only available for linear display modes."
Sorry for the multiple-related tickets for some of this stuff -- dividing up the report for tickets proved to be harder than I expected!

Just made some updates to this.
Here's an animated GIF for the "Settings > Forums" section:
When "Thread Display Mode" is set to "Threaded", the "Number of Posts to Show Per Page" option is now disabled and a notice appears.
Let me know if any changes should be made before I add the code.
I'll remove the explanatory text in a later revision.

Fixed in commit 63f6f4c.
This is set for 1.9, but we can move it back to 1.8.6 if we want.
