Problems with Notifications for External Blog Posts

Description

I just added some blog RSS feeds to the CUNY School of Professional Studies group and a handful of people just came up to me telling me that they have about 50+ new messages from me in their mailbox about external blog posts.

I didn't realize that members would get messages for previous posts and a few members are wondering why they received any messages because they weren't subscribed to receive any emails from the group. I'm not sure if group email notifications have been reset from the upgrade, but perhaps we should test this and post something about members needing to update their group email notifications.

Sylvie Richards also told me that she is still receiving messages even though she has already received all the messages associated with each blog post. After hearing that, I went back into the group and deleted ALL external blogs to ensure that the flurry of emails would stop.

Lastly, I noticed that the group blog posts are not showing up in the group's activity stream.

In https://github.com/castiron/cac/commit/e8b155848dbb9ce5daefba8f9eb3d0ea6dbe178d I block the external blogs plugin from firing email notifications. Maybe not the most elegant the solution, but effective. If anyone has a better thought I would be happy to entertain it.

Sylvie's problem should not be one in the future thanks to this fix.

Group blogs are totally separate from external group blogs (confusing, I know). Please open a separate ticket for your other issue.

Sarah, now that this has been implemented, why don't you try it in a test group to make sure it works. I don't want you to be gun-shy with this new feature given what happened last time -- please consider giving it another shot with SPS once you feel comfortable with it.

That sounds like a good idea. I'll send some group invites to the community team over the weekend so we can test different email notification settings as well.
