You're seeing this problem because you managed to create a Doc that is not associated with a group. In most places throughout the Commons, we've hidden the ability to do this, but you found one of the places where it remains possible. In https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/8d42817481d84931e453ab794e22127acafa0bdf, I fix the problem so that you should be able to edit as expected. This will be available in tonight's release.

Ah, so you are not allowed to create personal documents? Will that also be the case with SocialPaper?

I wouldn't say that you're not allowed to create personal Docs. Clearly, it is possible, and we haven't gone way out of our way to disable this native feature of the BuddyPress Docs plugin. But we do deemphasize it heavily, in favor of the in-group Docs interface. This is primarily for historical reasons. See especially https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/2606.
It will be possible to link Papers to groups, but it'll be optional.
