Feature #4980
openCAC Featured Content -- Adding Randomization
0%
Description
I'm using the CAC Featured Content Plugin on NYCDH (nycdh.org), which reminded me that when one chooses a featured member or group, the selection is not randomized -- one has to enter a specific member/group. It would be much better to have the groups/members randomized. Can you please let me know how much development would be involved in adding that feature?

Yes, it's possible to randomize, though there's a lot packed into the idea of "random" featured items. Some questions to ponder:
- Does it make sense to "feature" a group or member that has not been active in a long time, or one with very little content?
- How can we be confident that users want to have their faces on the home page?
- Does randomness always happen within a content type - you select "groups" and then get a random group - or do we roll two dice, one for object type and one for the specific object? Is this a setting?
- Are randomized selections random per pageload? Or per time period?

Matt, can you say more about the randomness you're looking for here?

It would be neat to give a certain set of blogs, groups, and people a "featured" status which would mean they could be part of the set of features/groups/users from which a randomized selection could be made. though maybe that would require https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/2130#change-28949
