openBP Notifications

Description
Opening a thread to discuss notifications, which I sometimes find confusing.
Currently, when I'm on a subsite, I have one notification -- bbp_new_reply
When I click bbp_new_reply, I'm taken to my profile page. Then, the notification drop-down shows the detail of the reply -- "You have one new reply to x post by y person." If I click that, then I'm taken to the reply in the forum (and the notification is cleared).
When I click the notification icon itself from the subsite, I'm taken to https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/members/lwaltzer/notifications/, where my notification is listed. I have to then actively click Read to clear the notification.
Given that we have RBE running, perhaps we should discuss if the notification is redundant or distracting, or if there might be a method to have it cleared if we can be sure the message was read?
Can we adjust the bbp_new_reply notification to show the same content that one sees from within their profile with a link directly to the forum post when users are on subsites?
Are there other notification triggers in the system that also might benefit from some attention?

Thanks for the thread and the thoughtful comments, Luke.

In what situation do you get a notification for a forum post? Is it when you're mentioned by your username Luke Waltzer?
I like the idea of better integration with RBE. I guess that'd look like one of the following:
1. Detect that an email has been read (pixel image?) and mark notification "read" accordingly
2. When a user responds to a thread, mark notifications read that correspond to earlier events in that thread
Item 1 raises potential problems for privacy - we don't currently track email reads, except for newsletters - and also poses some technical challenges (security policies for email clients block some external images, etc). Item 2 seems more promising.
It'd be helpful to get a sense of what other services do with notifications in these sorts of cases. If you get a Twitter mention, twitter.com will add an item to the "Interactions" tab or whatever it's called. The "new" count goes away when visiting that tab. Does anything happen if you reply via a third-party app (like our option 2)?

What's the text of the notification as you saw it? Was it something like "Someone mentioned you in a forum reply"? There's a limit to how much information can be put into the notification menu.
I'm going to assign to Paige to see if she has thoughts.

This forum post -- https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/data-privacy-and-security-369391218/forum/topic/protecting-student-data/#post-52610 -- triggers the "bbp_new_reply" when I'm on a subsite.
I do now have superadmin privs on the system, but I think I was seeing this before.

Can you post a screenshot or something? When you say "bbp_new_reply", is that the exact text you're seeing in the browser? If so, that's obviously a bug.

Aha, thanks for the screenshot. This is a bug. The problem is probably that bbPress isn't active on the subsite, which means it can't perform the necessary formatting. I'll look into it.

I'll write a proof-of-concept that does what I suggest in the bbPress ticket. bbPress might not want it, but it should be a viable way to fix the problem on the Commons. CCing Ray as an FYI.

I've opened #7656 to address the secondary-site issue, which is more clearly a bug than Luke's other concerns.
