Homepage slider doesn't offer option to move through slides

Description

In the past, when one moused over the left and right margins of the homepage slider, a grayish modal would appear that, when clicked, would move the slides forward or backwards.

When I look at the homepage now on Mac/Chrome, I no longer see those modals on mouseover and I can no longer cycle through the slides, which seems problematic. Is this happening for others?

The buttons are there, they're just too short. I don't know why this is happening - it's not happening locally, so I assume it's a side-effect of some aspect of the images or other content on the production site.

In https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/666e11b7c1555e887dcf1918a0c62f47729a567e I added some explicit styling that seems to fix the problem. This is live on the production site (hard refresh).
