Description
Hi Boone and Ray,
I recently set up a group and a site for a course I'm teaching on the Commons -- https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/approachingdh/ and https://approachingdh.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
Tonight, in class, some of the students told me they had put up blog posts, and I realized I had never received notifications of them. After looking into it, I believe that the reason for this is that I selected the following privacy setting:
I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors
Instead of this one:
I would like my site to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers
when I created the group.
Can you please confirm that this is the case? (I just changed the settings to the latter setting, btw)? If so, I really think we need to update the privacy instructions and options to make the ramifications of such choices clear, as I was really surprised not to receive notifications of blog posts

Yes, I believe this is the case.
The issue has come up in the past. There's a ticket in the 1.13 milestone proposing to change the behavior so that this privacy setting does not block activity items from being created. I propose we close this ticket in favor of that one, and ensure that it gets done for the spring release. #8075

Thanks, Boone. The solution you suggest sounds perfect.

Great - let's fold it in there.
