Description

I just created a new group. On the second-to-last step, I saw that "Send Invites" was the last step. When I got to it, the new page containing that step loaded, but then it seemed to flash and take me back to a blank Step 1: Create New Group page and there was no confirmation that the creation process finished. It does look like the group was actually created. I am assuming that this bug is related to our new onboarding system. I'm on Chrome/Mac -- let me know whether you need other info

  • Target version set to 1.13.2

Thanks, Matt. I'm not sure how we missed this during implementation.

I think there are three options:
1. Remove the Send Invites step.
2. Keep the Send Invites step, but remove the functionality. Replace with some text that says "After creating the group, click 'Send Invites' in the group menu to invite members to the group" or something like that.
3. Somehow launch the onboarding process during the Send Invites group creation step.

Item 3 is technically and conceptually difficult, and makes a long group creation process even longer. Choice 1 is the easiest and cleanest, but it may deemphasize the process of invitation too much for the taste of Matt and others. So 2 might be the best compromise.

Adding Chris and Erik for any thoughts.

Thanks, Boone. Is there a way of combining these options — maybe offering people a choice between 1. As the last step, creating the group and inviting new members (which would load the invitation overlay and perhaps send people back to the group homepage afterwards, or 2. As the last step, create the group and send invitations later?

This sounds like my suggestion 3. Nothing's impossible, but it would be hard technically and, I think, from a design point of view, to conceive and build this. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're suggesting.

It's similar to your third proposal, though it would allow people to skip sending invites. I am imagining two buttons, that when clicked, would do the following

(x) (x)
button 1 button 2
"Create group and send invites" "Create group and skip sending invites"
action: would launch invitation process action: would complete group process and take user to group home page

Does that make sense?

I guess so - The way I'd build it is probably that both buttons would send the user to the group home - ie out of the group creation process, from a technical point of view - but the difference is that the first would launch the invitation process after group creation. So, essentially, invitations would no longer be part of group creation process conceptually; instead, the options would be "finish and send invitations" or "just finish".

that sounds great to me.

Sorry for not doing this sooner and having a round of revisions. I've put something in place that will fix this for 1.13.2, and we can revise wording/styling in the next release if we'd like. Screenshot attached. Clicking the first button takes you to the group home and opens the modal, clicking the second button just takes you to the group home.
