It seems that there is. Does anyone know what the limit is? Here's how I discovered it:
Via Zendesk, Prof. Julia Brown reported that she would create multi-paragraph responses within a Word doc (screenshot attached). She would then attempt to leave the entire thing as a comment (screenshot attached). She would not get any error message, but then could not see the comment beneath the student's paper. When she would try again she'd get a false duplicate report (screenshot attached). I was able to replicate all of this.
It's now solved by only entering one paragraph at a time. But it'd be great if the limit was apparent to the user, and if an error message would appear when comments aren't actually visible.

Thanks for confirming this behavior, Marilyn.
It looks like there's not a strict word limit, but instead, our Akismet spam filtering system is holding these long comments for moderation for some reason. (Akismet's algorithms are a black box, so we can't be totally sure why, but length must have something to do with it.) There's no reason to run comments from logged-in users through Akismet in these cases, so I've added some logic in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/269e74455de7fd99ebae03b880715b928478b03b that causes it to be skipped. This will prevent the problem after the next release.
